Types of loads
Common duty cycles imposed on the battery can be classified as (a) Continuous load and
(b) Non continuous load. Continuous loads are energized throughout the duty cycle where as
Non continuous loads are energized only in portions of the duty cycle.0900000000000000000

A) Continuous loads
( E.g. Telecommunications, UPS, Emergency lighting, SPV etc.,)

1) Constant current discharge : ( E.g.Telecom)

Ex.1: Selection of a battery for supplying a load of 10 amps for 5 hours to an end cell voltage of
1.75V when the system voltage is 48V at an ambient temperature of 270 C.
The information required / given for battery sizing is:
1. Load current : 10 amps
2. Backup time : 5 hrs
3. System voltage : 48volts
4. End cell voltage : 1.75 volts
0
5. Temperature : 27 C
Step 1 : Number of cells = System voltage / Nominal voltage
= 48 / 2
= 24 cells
