Dear Ms. Jones, Congratulations, as of July 17, 2084 you have been randomly selected to participate in the new earth colony program. Based on your scores from your recent graduation from mid-level academics, you have been given two possible future careers. These careers consist of you becoming an Electrical Engineer or Pest Control Expert. This report reviews the requirements and details of both career paths that have been opened up to you. In this report we will go over the job importance, specifics, the compensation per job, the education requirements, and finally how the transfer to colonies will happen. We have looked into your academic records and have chosen these careers after much consideration. Here at the job assignment unit we have taken all factors into consideration and know these careers are right for you. We are happy to be able to provide you the choice of either of these jobs and we look forward to seeing what career choice you make.

Best Regards, Jack Tern Job Assignment Group 5 Deep Space Operations

AUTOMATED COLONIST JOB SURVEY: NUCLEAR ENGINEER OR PEST CONTROL EXPERT

INTRODUCTION
The Deep Space Operations (DSO) team is happy to welcome you to this new part of your life in the amazing field of space colonization. Since man first looked to the stars we wished to expand to it and now we have. Since the 2050 population and resource crisis space colonization has become the next step for humanity (European Space Agency[World Population Prospects]). These space based colonies provide a safe place for continued human expansion and a launching point for the mining of the asteroid belt. As per your request for colony based living we have prepared this report for the two possible careers available to you.

We know that you are now in the position of deciding which of these two fields of work to go into. These two choices were chosen due to many factors including the fact that your father was known as an expert in theoretical energy systems and the need for these two positions to be filled on colony #18. Based on each jobs importance, specifics, the compensation, and the job requirements we will judge which of the two jobs may be best suited to you. Finally you will be informed on how the transfer to colonies will occur.

Based on both the facts and our analysis we will see which of these fields you would most enjoy and be the most productive in.

IMPORTANCE OF THESE POSITIONS

Although one of these jobs may seem to be of lesser quality or importance that is simply not the case. Both of these jobs are very important on the colonies due to both the need for pests to be at a minimal to ensure no loss of supplies and to ensure the running of the solar arrays.

As a pest control officer on colony 18 your task will be to ensure the elimination of any nonnative species that makes its way onto the colony. Even with all current safety precautions it is inevitable that some creatures will come aboard with the constant port traffic. These can range from small mammal based creatures to insect populations to a rogue bacterium. Here at DSO we have had firsthand experience with the trouble these pests can cause. Rats and mice are known to get into the control systems and wiring running throughout the systems and insects and bacteria destroy food by the hundreds of tons. A good comparison is the destruction they used to cause on old earth food stores. It is estimated that these pests caused 10-16% of world crops to be destroyed (Sciencedaily[Spread of Crop Pests]), which cannot be allowed on station.

The other job of Electrical Engineer is vital to the entire station to ensure the vital solar arrays are maintained and running at peak efficiency. These systems were chosen due to the nonvolatile nature of solar energy and that without atmosphere the amount of energy that reaches the arrays is 144% more efficient (Wikipedia[Space Based Solar Power]). These need to be constantly kept due to micro-meteors causing damage on the tremendous arrays.

Although both these jobs have a massive difference in what they entail, they are both vital to the continued running of the colony. Page 7

JOB SPECIFICS
On colony 18 you will be expected to perform either of your jobs to the highest of standards. As such we will give you a synopsis of what each of these jobs will entail. As a pest control expert you will be expected to control and destroy any species of pest that invades the colony. This will involve a lot of work in small or confined spaces in order to track down the pests in their hiding spaces. This will also involve work with traps containing minute amounts of poisons. NOTE: due to recycled air on the colony there in no work with fumigates or gas based pesticides. The most likely areas you will be working in are the residence areas, waste management systems, and food storage holds. Although there may be others these are the most often reported areas.

As an electrical engineer there is no real set place you will be working in on the colony. Even in different places your job will be ensuring that the colony electrical systems are running at peak efficiency. This will involve a management type setup to ensure all grids are working with routine checks on mainline systems. You will also be required to inspect any systems that are undergoing maintenance. This will include the solar arrays and out of shell (OOS) systems. These systems are on the outer wall of the colony and will require a space-walk to check. For both of those you will be paid hazard pay which will be determined by each situation.

JOB COMPENSATION
Both of these jobs are applicable to overtime and hazard pay based on the conditions you may work under. There is no set amount as each condition differs and will allot for different compensation amounts. As a pest control expert the base pay for you working in hab-blocks, storage facilities, and general areas is an average of 14.59 credits per hour, with an average work year being 30,340.00 credits. (Bureau of Labor Statistics[Pest Control Worker]) As an electrical engineer you will work in many similar places as the pest control expert. Your average wage will be 41.92 credits an hour, with an average work year being 87,180.00 credits a year. (Bureau of Labor Statistics[Electrical Engineering])

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
For the job of pest control you will not need to undergo any more formal education. At the point you are at (Completed: Grade 12) a sufficient education level to continue onto this career (Bureau of Labor Statistics[Pest Control Worker]). Although no formal education is required you will receive on the job training to ensure that you can do this job properly.

If you choose to become an electrical engineer your current education status of having completed grade 12 will not be sufficient. You will need to complete a bachelors degree to get the minimal required education (Bureau of Labor Statistics[Electrical Engineering]). This will occur over 3-5 years of higher level courses. Although there is no specified additional training for this education, you will become versed in large scale solar arrays and all of their workings.

Page 9

Both jobs will require the mandatory 3 month training course to be able to work in a zero gravity environment. This course will ensure that you are able to work in any environment and have minimal safe training in case of emergencies. This is necessary for anyone wishing to live on colony and will be done with school for engineering or during job training for pest control.

COLONY TRANSFER
The transfer to colony 18 will occur after your formal and/or informal education is acquired. This will be a standard trip and more information will be supplied once your career path has been chosen. Most likely you will be launched from spaceport 9 on the eastern seaboard. Prior medical history will be needed to ensure there are no complications for you during the launch.
