Can a man without legs complete a marathon race? Ren Nielsen can. His history is a testimony to the human will, a story about never letting limitations govern your life. Pressalit Care does not accept limitations either. For more than 25 years we have worked to clear them out of the way. With knowledge, products and advice. The objective is a better life for people with physical disabilities, a better working environment for those who help them, and a better, longer term solution for managements that invest in the facilities. We have summed up our way of attacking this task in two words: keep living.

In 1991 a train accident cost Ren Nielsen both his legs. In 1993 he became world champion at water skiing. In 1999 he set world records in the shot put and the javelin. At the Para Olympics in Sydney in 2000, he won a silver medal in the shot put, a gold in the javelin and a bronze in the pentathlon. Now Ren is training for the Iron Man competition in Hawaii in 2004 where he will take part on the same terms as the other athletes.

Respect is the starting point for all our development work at Pressalit Care. Respect for the user and the life that our solutions make easier. Respect for the carers for whom our solutions constitute a workplace. And finally respect for the many considerations that lead to the choice of a solution by management. We involve users, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, doctors, architects, engineers and public authorities in the entire process from development until our products are in use. The result is carefully planned products that take into consideration such diverse issues as respect for the individual, the opportunity for rehabilitation, regulations on working environment, precepts of hygiene, environmentally friendly production and environmentally safe disposal of used products. We aim to set the standards for the entire industry.

Everyone is a unique individual. Everyone wants to be able to be special and Pressalit Care respects this desire. The result of the work that lies behind our products is a great degree of flexibility. Flexibility ensures that the products can be adjusted to any user and any user situation. The concrete form that flexibility takes is the horizontal track the foundation of our solutions. With the horizontal track mounted on the wall, the individual products can be moved around the room at will close to one another to create better coherence between the bathroom functions or farther apart to create space and good working conditions. For the user who can manage many things alone, it means the maximum freedom and thus self-esteem. For the carer, it means optimal working conditions and thus satisfaction in work. For management, it means a quicker adaptation to new requirements at minimal cost.

The room that functions well

Creating a well-functioning room is a complex task. Pressalit Care therefore works systematically. All of our solutions are developed in relation to three clearly defined elements that set forth the requirements: the User, the Carer and the Room. The system is represented by three icons: User Carer Room. On the following pages, we review the thinking that lies behind our way of working. Pressalit Cares products are created through collaboration and teamwork. The users and carers experiences are combined with Pressalit Cares development expertise and knowledge of movement patterns and space requirements.

User
We wish to preserve the persons mobility at the highest level for as long as possible. The carefully planned and flexible interior design enables the user to manage situations in the bathroom alone to a greater degree. At the same time, the user can feel safe and confident because Pressalit Cares products are strong and stable.

Carer
For users who cannot manage things themselves, personal assistance is required in the bath and at the toilet. The bathroom thus becomes a workplace for both family and health care professionals. It is our conviction that good working conditions, including an appropriate design of the workplace, must be given high priority so the work can be performed according to the highest health and safety standards.

Room
The rooms we work with can be too small or poorly designed. But the walls cannot be moved, so our products must. The flexibility of our solutions makes the room more accessible and easier to work in because it optimises the space available. The future value is ensured, because the track easily allows for changes in the position and combination of products.

Hanne Rasmussen, architect and social scientist, is a key figure in this work: "Some people have two legs, others have four wheels." With her uncompromising attitude, Hanne Rasmussen took part in Pressalit Cares creation of the very first bathroom products for people with physical disabilities in 1974. In 1998 she received the Vanfre Funds Research Award.

User
People want to take care of themselves. This is fundamental to self-esteem. To be able to manage in the bath and at the toilet is perhaps most fundamental of all. Pressalit Care not only makes it possible our solutions also make it a pleasurable experience.

Space is a scarce resource. Pressalit Care breaks through the rooms limitations. With the wall track, the room adjusts to the user and not the other way around. This is what we call the room that functions well.
