Highland Style!
It is always nice to start the New Year with some good news; and the announcement that Inverness and the Highlands are going to play a major role in Scotlands 2014 Homecoming celebrations, is certainly that. The Highland Homecoming (Tilleadh dhan Ghidhealtachd) will last from 1st September to 31st October. The Festival will start with the Northern Meeting Piping Championships and the World Sheepdog Championships; before the Highland Clans arrive in Inverness the following weekend to lead a Torchlight Procession through the streets of Inverness to mark the 150th Anniversary of the opening of Northern Meeting Park and the start of a world record breaking Masters World Championships Highland Games (MWC2014) featuring 190 competitors. It really will be an unforgettable weekend with the climax of the 2014 Blas Festival, Shintys Camanachd Cup Final and the Kirking of the Council all adding to the fun. Full details of the Highland Homecoming programme can be found at www. invernessfestivals.com or at www.whatsonhighlands.com and you can expect more events to be added to the packed programme which already includes the Highlands Strongest Man, the Loch Ness Marathon and the Inverness Street Theatre Festival to name but a few. The Highland Homecoming Festival will climax with two of the most eagerly anticipated events of 2014 the 2014 Royal National MOD featuring over 3000 performers (11-18 October) and a special Homecoming Halloween Show on Ness Islands (30-31 October) bringing the Festival to a conclusion. Of course The Homecoming Halloween Show is more than just the end of the Highland Homecoming Festival. It is also the start of the 2014 Inverness Winter Festival and we cannot wait to tell you about the surprises that the team at the Town House have got in store for us.

COMEDY DOCUMENTARY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE
Oscar Time.
It was during the UK premiere of MANDELA: THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM [1] (03 JAN) that the great mans death was announced, meaning that even more attention is now being given to the biopic based on Nelsons autobiography. And perhaps even more likelihood that IDRIS ELBA, playing the role of Madiba, will nd himself anointed with an Oscar. Initial reviews suggest that its a powerful portrayal, although steering well clear of any controversy. That lm is just one of many notable releases this month as the glut of US lms making sure theyre out in time for Academy Award nominations, come to UK screens. This looks like being one of the tightest battles in years, with another lm examining black history, Steve McQueens 12 YEARS A SLAVE [2] (10 JAN) also impressing critics, particularly the performances from CHIWETEL EJIOFOR and LUPITA NYONGO alongside established stars BRAD PITT, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH (swoon) and MICHAEL FASSBENDER (semi-swoon). Look out too for awards for THE RAILWAY MAN [3] (01 JAN) (COLIN FIRTH and NICOLE KIDMAN in the true story of a victim from World War IIs Death Railway looking for those responsible for his torture), AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY [4] (17 JAN) (CUMBERBATCH popping up again, this time alongside MERYL STREEP and JULIA ROBERTS in a black comedy about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family) and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (24 JAN) (CAREY MULLIGAN aka Mrs Mumford starring in the COEN BROTHERS latest, looking back at the birth of modern folk music in 1961 Greenwich Village). THE WOLF OF WALL STREET [5] (EDEN COURT, 17-30 JAN) is by all accounts a return to form for Americas greatest living lmmaker, MARTIN SCORSESE, based on the real-life account of a corrupt stockbrokers rise and fall. Its also the fth collaboration between the director and his current muse LEONARDO DICAPRIO, whereas Martys old favourite ROBERT DE NIRO seems these days to be acting his way on autopilot through whatever hes offered, content just to take the pay cheques. And this month that means LAST VEGAS [6] (03 JAN) (in which, alongside MICHAEL DOUGLAS, KEVIN KLINE and MORGAN FREEMAN, he plays the part of a sixty-something throwing a bachelor party in Vegas) and, depressingly, GRUDGE MATCH [7] (24 JAN) (in which pair of ageing boxing rivals are coaxed out of retirement to ght one nal bout -- 30 years after their last match. Hes up against SLY STALLONE which makes for the terrifying prospect of Raging Bull meets Rocky, without any of the greatness/ redeeming features of either). And the lm doesnt end there this month. Look out for the INVERNESS FILM FANS MIDWINTER SUN SEASON at EDEN COURT (including the French classic PLEIN SOLEIL on 21 JAN), the BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL on 30 JAN at EDEN COURT and the excellent KINGUSSIE FOOD ON FILM FESTIVAL from 30 JAN-02 FEB with loads of grubrelated movies including DELICATESSEN, VOLVER and TAMPOPO. Presumably the kids will be jiggered after all the excitement of the holiday season (concluding perhaps with the WEE HOT HIGHLAND FLING on 31 DEC or one of the last few SLEEPING BEAUTY panto perfomances at Eden Court - until 06 JAN), which is why theres very little for them to do in January. Although this is the time for resolutions and all that, so maybe learning an instrument is in order. Or embracing Highland heritage. For anyone who loves music, record shops are a unique source of wonder and delight, at least if youre of a certain generation. These days, unfortunately, as Spotify et al stomp their jackboots across the cultural consciousness, record shops as physical places of pilgrimage are a dying breed. Social networking means you dont need to spend your Saturday afternoons mooching about and icking through the racks with like minded souls in the hope of discovering something thatll change your life. And thats sad. Nevertheless there are some admirable souls still ying the ag and we have one in our midst in the form of MARK STUMBLES, owner of IMPERIAL MUSIC in the Victorian Market. Having started Imperial in Bristol back in 1996, he built such a reputation for the place that it was named one of the ten best independent record shops in the country before its closure in 2004. Bristols loss was our gain though and in April 2009 he moved up here, opening Imperial deep in the bowels of the market and creating a wonderland for record lovers, providing a totally different experience to the corporate homogeneity of the likes of HMV. Enduring cold winters and driven by a genuine love for music, even he admits that its sometimes hard to be optimistic about the future of physically selling things, particularly CDs. One glimmer of light though comes in the form of vinyl, the format that seems to be making a comeback and on some days accounts for almost 80% of his sales. No wonder as some of the stuff in his shop, particularly the lavish box sets are truly
things of beauty in a way that an MP3 download will never be. Check out the shop and show your support for a place that makes the world that little bit better. And in the meantime, here are some of the songs that Mark loves to listen to right now:
WHITE DENIM Pretty Green Saw these boys in Glasgow recently tiny venue + beer + one of the best live bands in the world great! And, just in case you need an excuse for a little more New Year celebration, 25 JAN is BURNS NIGHT. Many of you will be going down the traditional route of drams, pipes and poetry, while others might be plumping for the stripped-down version involving a Haggis Supper from the chippy and a bottle of Buckfast. If you want to celebrate in style though, then why not participate in the BURNS NIGHT event organised by the EDEN COURT CREATIVE team. Start in the city centre at 6.45pm with a Haggis Highland Games (whatever that may be), followed by a procession through the streets of the city centre, across the river and over to Eden Court for an eye-catching outdoor projection display, plus bite-sized drama performances based around key moments in the Bards life. The nights celebration climaxes with a traditional ceilidh in the OneTouch Theatre where the organisers promise to teach you a few standard dances like Strip The Willow and The Dashing White Sergeant. There are also ceilidhs and Burns Night celebrations at the Glen Mhor Hotel (tickets 14.50 from www.reelceilidhs.moonfruit.com) and, slightly further aeld, at the award-winning CLACHAIG INN, GLENCOE.

ATHLETIC BALL COMBAT EXTREME RACING
Mush! Mush!
Its that time of the year again when you think it might be rather a ne idea to buy yourself a husky, such is the beauty of the canine competitors in the AVIEMORE SLED DOG RALLY at GLENMORE FOREST Park on SAT 25 & SUN 26. From just 20 entries in 1984, the event has grown to be one of the most important dates on the calendar for the self-styled UK Mushing Family. Over 200 teams are expected this year, with those gorgeous dogs pulling sleds over a picture postcard course that may even, if meteorologists are to be believed, be covered in snow this year. And its a great spectacle to witness, so for more details head to siberianhuskyclub.org.uk
This year the slopes opened earlier than ever and it looks like snowsports fans should have plenty of opportunities to hone their skills in the months ahead. And if you want to get competitive about it, its always worth checking out snowsportscotland.org where you can nd details of upcoming events, this months highlight being the GORDON SKIERS OPEN at THE LECHT on SAT 18 JAN. Theres even a Bairns Race for the prodigiously talented youngsters. Talking of prodigious talent, DUNDEE UTDs Ryan Gauld has it in spades and is already being whispered about as the most promising Scottish player of his generation, with scouts not just from the Premiership, but also from Real Madrid and Barcelona checking out his every move. Hes the most notable member of a young team playing with real panache and moving up the SPL table accordingly, so itll be interesting to see how they cope when they come to town to face INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE (11 JAN) and ROSS COUNTY (18 JAN). County are having a wretched season so far and ICT are trying to maintain momentum after the departure of Terry Butcher and arrival of Yogi Hughes, so theres lots at stake when the two meet in Inverness on NEW YEARS DAY for the rst EL KESSOCKO of 2014. Should be the perfect way to blow away those Hogmanay hangovers, though there might be some sorrows to be drowned afterwards. For County its a particularly crucial month, with visits from ST JOHNSTONE and HEARTS, while Caley wont want to be distracted by the forthcoming League Cup semi nal against HEARTS (and its ludicrous, anti-Highlands Edinburgh location/noon kick off) on 02 FEB

Going Live.
The festive season draws to a close with the last frenetic shenanigans of the Eden Court panto, SLEEPING BEAUTY, which slaps its last thigh on 05 JAN. Its perhaps a little too much to hope that a trip to the theatre will induce mass desire to take in live performance on a regular basis, but hopefully at least a few people will have decided to make 2014 the year that they take in the original 3D experience a little more often. And this month offers plenty of opportunities to full such resolutions with a wide array of entertainment on offer taking in a diverse mix of genres, the most notable being SCOTTISH BALLETs production of HANSEL & GRETEL [1] at EDEN COURT from 2225 JAN. As weve come to expect from SB, this is a rather special take on the story, Christopher Hampsons delightfully inventive production, relocating the Grimm Brothers famous fairy tale to the 1950s and incorporating the stories and imagination of the people of Scotland. Over the past year participants of all ages, through creative writing and visual art competitions, have helped shape the show and the result already looks like being one of the highlights of the year ahead. More audience input and just as inventive is I AM THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS [2] at MAD HATTERS on SAT 01 FEB. Continuing the RocknWrestle theme that popped its head over the barricades last year, this is a live comedy production by fans, for fans and was a sell out at last years Edinburgh Fringe festival. Billing itself as a show about life, fandom, geekiness and the wild world of the squared circle, with stand up, improv, special guests and more, it promises to be a lot of fun, with comedians BILLY KIRKWOOD and CHRIS BROOKER marshalling the mayhem. Rather gentler humour as a familiar face from the TV, PHIL HAMMOND brings his GAMES TO PLAY WITH YOUR DOCTOR [3] to EDEN COURT on SUN 26 JAN. As both a practicing doctor and campaigning journalist, he sees things from both sides of the desk, so expect some underlying serious points to be made in a show that also teaches you how to sing your symptoms, sniff a thermometer, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, get past the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive. Finally a heads up for THE SUICIDE at EDEN COURTs ONETOUCH on 05 FEB. Nikolai Erdmans black comedy was originally banned by Stalin and is widely considered to be one of the nest plays produced in the Soviet Union. Erdmans controversial piece of theatre still shares some parallels with todays world as will no doubt be demonstrated when a cast of HND Acting students from Inverness College give their take on this rarely produced farcical tale. DR PHIL HAMMOND : GAMES TO PLAY WITH YOUR DOCTOR @ Eden Court Empire, 7.30pm. Medicine is jolly serious, life and death, pain and suffering, pills and needles. But wouldnt a trip to the doctor or a rush up to A+E be much more fun if it was a game? In his BRAND NEW show, Dr Phil - a practising doctor, campaigning journalist and the first comedian to appear at a public inquiry - turns the whole of medicine into a succession of games for you to play with your doctor*. Whats the diagnosis? Whats the misdiagnosis? Why are you doing that to me doctor? How long have I got? What are you doing with all our money? And when did you last wash your hands? Learn how to sing your symptoms, sniff a thermometer, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, get past the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive - all through Dr Phils highly subversive guerrilla tactics, some of which may be
THE SUICIDE @ Eden Court OneTouch, 1.30pm, 7pm. Semyon Semyonovich, an unemployed young man, comes to the realisation that hes worth more dead than alive. As news of his misery spreads, a parade of locals emerge from the woodwork hoping to exploit Semyons suicide for their own gain. With his doting wife Maria and mother in law Serafima now living on the edge, and an array of eccentric individuals waiting with bated breath for his last one, will Semyon have the nerve to carry out this fatal self-inflicted act? Nikolai Erdmans black comedy was originally banned by Stalin in Soviet Russia. Widely considered as one of the finest plays produced in the Soviet Union, Erdmans controversial piece of theatre still shares some parallels with todays world. taste sensations to be astounded by. Some of that attitude has ltered through to what Jaipur is doing and, remarkably, the majority of the menu is taken up with dishes you will never have encountered before, traditional options condently buried in a section called Golden Oldies. We re the only diners in the airy, modern room (a little too simple in dcor, but resolutely refusing to subscribe to typical kitschiness), but apparently it s packed in the evening. At least this gives the aforementioned waiter, welcoming and helpful throughout, time to talk. And ensures that our food is freshly cooked and served without having to wait long. My starter is Samooka. Yeah, Samooka. Told you this is a place for new experiences.
aimed primarily at tourists. If we d taken care to actually have a shufty at even the set menu we d have noticed a host of excitingly unfamiliar dishes and our visit would have come much sooner. As curry acionados know, the majority of cooks at Indian restaurants actually come from Bangladesh, that usually being the main reason for the same old dishes being churned out time and time again. And, indeed the chef here is Bangladeshi too, but, as our friendly waiter (who happens to be his son) tells us, this enterprise started in London, before moving to Aberdeen and thence to our city. In that London they demand far more from their Indian restaurants, recognising that the vast country has a rich variety of cuisines on oer and a whole panoply of
