Struck by the quality of the entries and the variety in which copper has been used

Elizabeth Walker London, UK is winner of a new iPad mini by voting in the Public Choice Award on Copperconcept.org

Brussels, December 16 , 2013: For the first time, registered visitors to the CopperConcept website had the opportunity to vote for their favourite building from those shortlisted for the Awards in our Public Choice poll. The outright winner of the Public Choice Award 2013 was Dolomitenblick apartment building in Italy by architects: Plasma Studio who received the award at a dedicated Award ceremony in Paris. The European Copper in Architecture Awards celebrates architectural design incorporating and showcasing copper and copper alloys (e.g. brass, bronze). A record number of entries were received this year for the 16th edition of the competition, with 82 projects in the running from which the jury shortlisted 10. The winners of the European Copper in Architecture Awards were revealed on 04 November 2013 on the occasion of the opening of the BATIMAT trade show in Paris. The Grand Jury Award was given to the Pitgoras Aquitectos architectural firm for the Platform of Arts and Creativity in Guimares, Portugal. From those who took part in the Public Choice vote, Elizabeth Walker from London, UK was drawn at random and received a new iPad mini. Elizabeth gave us a short interview: I was struck by the quality of the entries and the variety in which copper has been used. By participating in the poll and carefully considering each project, I was drawn into the designs and therefore, I have gained a greater appreciation of each of them said Elizabeth who had been told about the poll in a CopperConcept newsletter by one of her colleagues. Elizabeth was familiar with copper and copper alloys, Our practice, Bennetts Associates recently chose to use bronze in one of their projects Gateway Buildings at St Antonys College, Oxford explaining how the warm tones of the material fit comfortably with the surrounding Cotswold stone and how the bronze is delicately articulated to define the functions within the building- standing seam sheets for the bedrooms and folded panels for the Porters Lodge, offices and seminar rooms. Although familiar with architectural use, Elizabeth said I wasnt aware of its antimicrobial powers before reading about it on CopperConcept 4 antimicrobial installations from around the world

Elizabeths personal favourite and the one she voted for was Covering of the Runic Stones in Jelling, Denmark, recognising the simplicity and beauty of the bronze and glass structures that provide a serene backdrop to the Iconic Danish monuments, which allowed them to remain in their current location, protected from the weather for generations to come. Editors of the CopperConcept website hope that Elizabeth will enjoy her new device - she and all iPad users have now an opportunity to download iBook for iPad with all entries of the 2013 Awards as well as our latest Copper Architecture Forum magazine.
