Art ISM movements

An ism is a suffix at the end of many English words. It signifies a belief, practice, idea, or movement

optimism, Buddhism, racism, favoritism, and terrorism.

In art, there are many movements that end in ism.

One of the central artists associated with Impressionism was Claude Monet. Monets painting, Impression, Sunrise, inspired the name of the movement. At first, people did not like impressionist paintings. It was criticized for being unfinished

Impressionists often did Landscapes or GENRE Paintings. Genre paintings are scenes of everyday people doing everyday things

Post Impressionism
Impressionism inspired another art movement called Post Impressinism.

Vincent Van Gogh is a famous Post Impressionist. He was troubled and cut his ear off. He only sold one painting in his lifetime. Today, his paintings are worth millions of dollars.

Pointillism
Pointillism is a technique created by Georges Seurat. Seurat used tiny dots of color to create a visual effect called active color mixing.

CUBISM
Cubism rejected the idea of using perspective to create art as seen in nature. It was geometric and two dimensional.
Objects were broken apart and the pieces could be viewed from all sides.

CUBISM
Cubism was a movement that began in France in the early 20th Century by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and French artist Georges Braque.

Picasso is best known for Cubism. In some of his pieces objects are geometrical but still easily identified.

Surrealism

Surrealism was started in the 1920s. Paintings focus on things found in the imagination, dreams, or fantasy. You might find people or every day objects, but they are depicted symbolically or in unusual way

One famous surrealist is Salvador Dali, known for his painting The Persistence of Memory

Abstract Expressionism
Abstract expressionist work is non objective- it has no recognizable subject. It uses color and line to produce an emotional response.

Abstract Expressionism
Kandinsky was an Abstract expressionist who was inspired by music. He named his paintings after songs, and used certain colors to represent certain instruments.
