Vineland High Edges Millville
in Academic Competition
In another closely contested battle of intellec-
tual aptitude, the host Vineland High School
Academic team edged out Millville, 34-30
recently in the VHS South auditorium.
It was the 15th meeting of the two teams,
with Vineland now holding a 9-5-1 edge.
The winning team, coached by Vicki Volpe,
includes Anthony Carter, Dhruv Patel, William
Lunsford, Brandon Jones, John Taormina,
Ronald Rodriguez, Jackie Askins, Veronica
Sitaylo, Tyler Adams, and Hernan Cruz.
Millville's team, coached by Donna
Cedarmark, featured Sara Panka, Joel Vasquez,
Matt Ballas, Abby Cossaboon, Frank Uzzolina,
Ryan Pletcher, Kacy Catalano, Mitchell Thomas,
Robby Page, and Erica Coslop.
The contest is intended to showcase the aca-
demic talent of the top students at the countys
two largest high schools when attention is focused
on the annual Thanksgiving Day football game.
In this contest, however, the final point total is
less significant than how well the contestants
answer some extremely challenging questions in
history, literature, geography, math, science and
what may be described as intellectual trivia.

O
n the Saturday after Thanksgiving, downtowns
across the country welcomed shoppers to buy
locally. In addition to that, Millville beckons hol-
iday shoppers this Friday evening with its Third Friday.
According to Glasstown Arts District Executive
Director Marianne Lods, Third Friday began in April
2001 at the grand opening of the Riverfront
Renaissance Center for the Arts. The opening was
very anticipated and brought out about 500 people.
After that first weekend, the boards of the Riverfront
Center and the Millville Development Corporation
agreed that the third Friday of every month of the
year would be celebrated for the openings of new
exhibitions at the Riverfront Center and the three
private galleries that existed.
It was a huge success, Lods notes, although visi-
tors and residents seemed to gravitate to only one or
two galleries and not any of eateries or other busi-
nesses that were opening at the time.
We developed a game with the names of open
businesses on it, and the visitors went around to many
of them and got the sheet initialed, Lods recalls. A
prize was offered each month. In less than a year
there was no need to continue the game, as people
couldnt wait to go around and see everything.

owntowns have been very much
in the news lately. Area newspa-
pers have been spotlighting cen-
tral business districts of area
cities and towns. They have also run articles
and editorials on the need for citieslike
the three in our countyto think and work
together to co-sponsor events and initia-
tives. Most recently, an article appeared
about howEgg Harbor is taking a hint from
Hammontons successful downtown revital-
ization initiatives.
I mention these examples as a means of
showing that, despite what some may say, a
downtown is still the heart and soul of a
city. Its obvious that this concept has not
been lost either on city leaders or the media.
While the shopping centers and big-box
stores that usually surround downtown
areas create a sense of economic prosperity
and growth, they dont reveal much more
about the character of the city that they
flank. Those businesses are, for the most
part, chains or parts of franchises and are
positioned in similar strategic locations
fromcity to citythe same stores with simi-
lar architectural designs.
A downtown, however, is like a neigh-
borhood. Taken together, the businesses
that comprise the downtown reflect the
unique characteristics and personality of
the city or town. Individually, the business-
es each have characteristics and personali-
ties of their own.
Like a friendly neighborhood, the busi-
nesses, unlike their larger counterparts sur-
rounding the downtown area, can be warm
and inviting. Just like the friendly neighbors
living near you, the downtown business
owners are in a much better position to wel-
come you and offer you the kind, personal-
ized service that you want and deserve.
As in any friendly neighborhood, the
businesses in that downtown area must
work together to keep it that way.
Merchants need to work togetherbe it as
part of a merchants association, a Main
Street organization like ours, or bothto
assure the strength and vitality of the down-
town business district. This is a lesson that
is being passed on as cities collaborate on
ways to strengthen their downtowns.
Just as a citys downtown area is its heart
and soul, volunteers are the heart and soul
of the downtown. Our Main Street Vineland
volunteers spend many hours planning,
organizing, working, and dedicating them-
selves to the health and vitality of our
downtown. This includes planning, promot-
ing and working events, beautification proj-
ects, and being downtown ambassadors to
the city. They do it because they believe in
the cause. They are the worker bees of the
organization. This concept, too, is being
passed on as downtowns see the need to
have volunteers supplement the work and
energy of paid staff.
Main Street Vineland will continue to
find newways to keep our downtownthe
heart and soul of Vinelanda strong,
healthy neighborhood. I

Mayor Seeks Volunteers,
Supplies for Bridgeton Code Blue
Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly is seeking
volunteers to help staff at least two area
churches that have agreed to serve as
warming centers as part of a new Code
Blue program for Bridgeton that gives
homeless individuals a place to escape
colder temperatures and frozen precipita-
tion during the winter months.
For the past several nights, St. Andrews
Church at 186 E. Commerce St, has served as
the Code Blue warming center over the past
week. Open from dusk until dawn, Pastor
Ellen Rutherford, Pastor Robin Weinstein
from Bethany Grace Church, and some
congregation members helped assist the
individuals who came to St. Andrews at
times through the long cold nights. Mayor
Kelly helped at various points as well.
While the effort was successful, Kellys
hope is that enough volunteers will step
forward and donate a little time so that
volunteers like Rutherford and the others
at a handful of churches wont get burned
out or overwhelmed doing multiple
overnight shifts keeping the centers open.
At present, joining St. Andrews on a des-
ignated warming center list that will rotate
each week, is Bethany Grace Community

Miracle on Rt. 40
Celebrates End of Litigation
Santa Claus took time from his work at
the North Pole to celebrate the fact that
the Santa Express and four other Richland
Village entities will stay open for business
as a result of a settlement entered into
with Buena Vista Twp.
Santa Claus joined representatives of sev-
eral businesses in Richland Village on Rt. 40
Buena Vista Twp. on Wednesday, December
4, to celebrate, the Miracle on Rt. 40.
The Cape May Seashore Line sued
Buena Vista Twp. to stop the sale of certain
property, which would have stopped these
businesses from using public parking that
both had relied upon for many years. The
Cape May Seashore Line and the Rail Tavern
indicated that they would have had to close
if in fact the properties had been sold.
The Santa Express would have had to
cancel rides during the holiday season if
the property used for parking was sold.
Last year over 5,000 people rode the
Santa Express and visited the Patcong Valley
Railroad Club. The Santa Express operates
weekends, round trip, between Tuckahoe
and Richland until Christmas. The Santa
Starlight Express operates select week-
nights (pajamas are encouraged!) until

These businesses were joined by Buena
Vista Township resident Mary Taft as a
plaintiff. They were also supported by the
Toy Store, the Richland Deli and the
Patcong Valley Railroad Club, which also
would have been adversely affected by the
sale of the properties in question.
Auditions To Be Held
Rosemary Saint-John is a loud, annoying
hypochondriac convinced she is allergic to
water. Celebrating her birthday at a restau-
rant with her four kooky sistersa hippie, a
valley girl, a trucker and a banker
Rosemary makes enemies with everyone
around her. When she disappears and is
presumed murdered, the only objective wit-

nesses in the restaurant are the audience
members, who must cast their vote. Was it
one of Rosemarys sisters? The self-taught
detective? The passionate French chef? The
polite and proper mitre d? The sarcastic
waiter? No one is above suspicion in this
delightful dinner theatre murder mystery!
The Director is looking for men and
women ages 15 and up. Auditions will be
held at The Event Center (2725 N. Delsea
Dr., Vineland) on Sunday, January 5 at 3
p.m. and Monday, January 6 at 7p.m. No
prep is needed. Cold readings from the
script will be given at auditions.

entered into agreements to manage local
radio station WSNJ and television station
QBC and to later purchase the assets of the
radio station, thereby acquiring it from
current owner Jim Quinn, who will remain
on staff as a radio and television host. The
sale of the radio station is expected to be
final upon FCC approval. The agreement
regarding the television station calls for
Pustizzi to manage QBC with Quinn main-
taining ownership of the TV station.
I see great growth potential in both
WSNJ and QBC. They each offer ample
programming options to strongly and posi-
tively support economic development in
this area of southern New Jersey, Pustizzi
explained about the purchase. More
importantly, I see the opportunity to
improve our community programming and
apply media streaming, or ongoing audio or
video feeds through the Internet, so our lis-
teners and viewers can access the music and
programming they prefer including real-
time local news, sports, community events
and other newsworthy happenings.
The radio and television station employs
approximately 10 full-time and 12 part-time
employees. The stations office and produc-
tion studios are located on High Street in
Millville.
Pustizzi is most recognized as co-founder
and past president of Trico Lift of Millville.
He is a former officer of Trico Equipment,
Inc.; a private family-owned equipment
rental business originating in Vineland in
the 1950s which enabled him to launch
Trico Lift in 1983. He is also co-owner of
The Millville Investment Group, which
owns and operates The Glassworks office
complex in Millville.

Winter Camp at YMCA

Provides Activities for Kids
Kids will have a safe, active place to go
this month on dates when school is closed
this holiday season. The YMCA of
Vineland has set a schedule for Winter
Camp 2013 for kids ages three to 15 years
old. The dates are December 23, 24, 26, 27,
30, and 31. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.,
except for the 24th and 31st, when the
closing is 2:30 p.m. Activities will include
crafts, games, swimming, and more.
Each day will include a special theme:
Monday, December 23: Pajama Day a
big-screen movie, popcorn, hot chocolate

day of winter-themed sports

into that past each Saturday between 1 and
4 p.m. The exhibits include artwork, glass-
ware, furniture, clothing, Native American
artifacts, and Civil War memorabilia.

cant local figures such as Vinelands
founder, Charles K. Landis; grape juice pio-
neer Dr. Thomas Welch; and Victor Durand,
who produced elegant glass art in the 1920s.

Master Gardeners Program
Set to Begin in January
Rutgers Master Gardeners of
Cumberland County Program will begin

Three Kings Day Donations
Requested
On Sunday, January 5, 2014, the Puerto
Rican Festival of NJ, Inc, will be distribut-
ing new toys to underprivileged youth of
the community in Vineland. They will also
be distributing new toys in the cities of
Millville on January 4th and Bridgeton on
January 5th (evening). There will be live
folkloric entertainment, food and refresh-
ment at all three venues.
Since they are expanding this event to
three municipalities this year, the Puerto
Rican Festival of NJ, Inc. is requesting
much needed monetary contributions to
purchase new toys. They will also pick up
new toys that you may want to contribute.

Santa and Mrs. Claus recently took time
out of their busy schedule to visit
Cumberland County College during the
annual Celebration of Lights in the Luciano
Conference Center. The event provides
education on the diverse holiday celebra-
tions held throughout the community.

Keith Wasserman has been named
Executive Director of Communications
and Marketing for Cumberland County
College. Wasserman is an accomplished
journalist and communications profes-
sional whose career has ranged from pro-
ducing news broadcasts in major televi-
sion and radio markets, to creating narra-
tive-driven film, print and online commu-
nication pieces for international corpora-
tions and academic centers and non-profit
organizations.
Wasserman earned a bachelors degree
in Political Science from Rutgers
University and a masters degree in
Journalism from The Ohio State
University. As a broadcast journalist, he
spent more than a decade writing and pro-
ducing television news and longer form
documentary-style pieces for
Philadelphias KYW-TV (at the time, an
NBC affiliate). Earlier in his career, he
covered news for CBS radio affiliate,
WCOL in Columbus, Ohio, and has pro-
duced coverage from four national politi-
cal conventions.
Wasserman founded Shoot the Moon
Communications in 1993 with the goal of
bringing the same standards of clarity,
credibility and creativity expected from
respected media organizations to the cre-
ation of corporate, government and non-
profit communications. Shoot the Moon
clients have included national corpora-
tions and institutions (HP, AT&T, W.L.
Gore, University of Pennsylvania Health
System) as well as prominent regional
organizations (SJ Healthcare/Inspira,
Bayshore Discovery Project, Southern
Shore Region Tourism Council, Atwater
Kent Museum, Delaware Lottery).
Wasserman and Shoot the Moon have
also provided public information services
for Cumberland County government.
Wasserman is the winner of a regional
Emmy Award for excellence in television
news coverage and a nominee for two oth-
ers. He has been recognized by the
Broadcast Designers of America for the
creative use of graphics and animations in
his productions. Most recently, Wasserman
(in collaboration with the Cumberland
County Cultural and Heritage Commission)
produced a series of audio podcasts that
won national recognition from the
American Association of State and Local
History. Wasserman and STM were also
awarded New Jerseys Governors Award,
the highest recognition in broadcast
tourism marketing for the creation of a
series of spots highlighting the hidden
treasures of Cape May and Cumberland
counties. Wasserman is currently vice-pres-
ident of the Jewish Federation of
Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester
Counties, a trustee at WheatonArts and a
former trustee of Friends School Mullica
Hill. He is a resident of Bridgeton and a
graduate of Bridgeton High School.
Parish of All Saints Hosting
Alpha Course
The Parish of All Saints, Millville will
be hosting an Alpha course on Wednesday,
evenings from January 8 through March
19, 2014, 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the parish
Spiritual Life Center at St. Mary Magdalen
Church. Each course session begins with
dinner, followed by a short talk looking at
a different aspect of the Christian faith,
and a time for discussion in a friendly
small group. There is no charge for the
Alpha course, but you will be asked to

Training

Certified Volunteer for a Domestic
Violence Response Team? The team has

The Services Empowering Rights of
Victims (SERV) Center for Family
Services program is the designated sexual
violence advocacy program for Camden,
Cumberland, and Gloucester counties and
the domestic violence advocacy program
for Cumberland and Gloucester counties.
Volunteers respond to hospitals and police
departments and assist the victims of
these crimes during their time of need.
SERV Volunteers must be 18 years old
or older, have access to transportation or a
vehicle, be willing to be subject to a refer-
ence and criminal background check, ded-
icate at least a year of service under the
supervision of the Volunteer Supervisor,
attend six volunteer meetings/trainings a
year, and be compassionate, empathetic,
and victim-centered.
The next NJ State mandated 40-hour
training program is scheduled for
Saturday January 4, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays,
January 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30 from 5

Local Salon Donates to
Toys for Tots

Vineland, and Rusty Hughes of Semper Marine
Detachment 205, proudly display the two
boxes full of toys collected by the salon and
spas staff and customers. Frey thanks all of
their customers for their generous donations
to Toys for Tots. Some customers donated toys
while others donated to a fund the salon used
to purchase more toys. Semper Marine
Detachment 205 runs the local Toys for Tots
campaign and distributes the collected toys to
hundreds of families throughout Cumberland
County that would otherwise go without.

which was held recently at
the Pines Manor in
Edison, NJ. As part of the
event, Mayor Bermudez
was invited to join Mayors
from New Brunswick,
Garfield, and Irvington in
a joint Town Hall Meeting
to discuss healthy com-
munity projects being
undertaken in their vari-
ous communities. In addi-
tion, as part of the confer-
ence, Vineland Health
Educator Emma Lopez
was formally recognized for her contributions to building healthy communities.
The conference opened with a presentation by James Marks, MD, MPH, Sr. Vice
President/Director Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Group who discussed
building healthy communities from a national perspective. Mayor Joseph A.
Curtatone of Somerville, MA then delivered the Keynote Address which featured a
presentation of his very successful Shape Up Somerville program. This city-wide
campaign was designed to increase daily physical activity and healthy eating
through programming, physical infrastructure improvements, and policy work.
Following the address, the Mayor's Town Hall Meeting was convened. The
panel format was moderated by Carissa Lawson, Morning Anchor for New Jersey
News 12. As part of the 90 minute discussion, the panel answered a variety of
questions related to programs and policies the mayors are pursuing in their
respective communities to encourage physical activity, increase access to healthy
foods, and generally promote a healthier environment.
"The conference was a great opportunity to learn about policies pursued by
cities and policy-makers on the cutting edge of advancing healthy eating and
active living strategies, Mayor Bermudez said. I also had the chance to talk
about what we are doing here in Vineland, such as establishing new bike lanes
as part of our complete streets policy, developing events like the Family Fun and
Fitness Festival, launching a Healthy Corner Store Initiative, and working with the
Vineland Board of Education to update their School Wellness Policy.
After taking a break for lunch, the Conference Planning Committee announced
their first Healthy Kids Champion Award winner, Vineland Health Department
Educator Emma Lopez. She was selected for her outstanding support of the
NJPHKs mission to design and implement childhood obesity prevention strate-
gies that support access to affordable healthy foods, safe physical activity, and
her leadership in the implementation of Vinelands first bike lanes. The award
was one of five presented to outstanding leaders for their commitment and con-
tributions in each of the NJPHK targeted communities of Camden, New
Brunswick, Newark, Trenton, and Vineland.
It is an honor to present the Healthy Kids Champion award to Emma Lopez
for her outstanding leadership in and commitment to combating childhood obe-
sity in Vineland, said Darrin Anderson, deputy director, NJPHK. Emma is well-
known and respected in her community for creating healthy environments and
promoting healthier lifestyles for the children of Vineland. Her support was
invaluable in the planning and installation of the citys bike lanes.
Nationally, approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents
aged 2-19 are obese. Children who are overweight or obese as preschoolers are 5
times (5x) as likely as normal-weight children to be overweight or obese as

his weekend, Millvilles Levoy
Theater will usher in the
Winter Solstice and the holiday
festivities with two Christmas
film classics that are a perfect match.
With an eight oclock screening for each
movie, audiences will be treated to Its a
Wonderful Life on Friday and Miracle on
34th Street on Saturday.
Frank Capras 1946 film classic Its A
Wonderful Life has been a perennial holi-
day television favorite for decades, but
this adaptation of Philip Van Doren
Sterns short story The Greatest Gift
should be enjoyed on the big screen, free
from commercials and other distractions.
The same holds true for George Seatons
1947 Miracle on 34th Street, a movie
whose inclusion of the Macys
Thanksgiving Day Parade opened the door
to the national broadcast of the event a
year after its release.
In the 60-plus years since their pre-
mieres, these films have continued to
make a significant impact on subsequent
generations. Its not surprising that the
American Film Institute (AFI) place
Miracle on 34th Street ninth in its 100
Years100 Cheers list and Its a Wonderful
Life has found a place on the AFIs Top
100 films and the number one slot of the
AFIs most inspirational movies.
While the stories they tell are quite
charming, their place on such lists has
more to do with their content. And over
two nights, Levoy audiences will have an
opportunity to witness two disparate plot-
lines sharing a substantial message about
the importance of belief and faith, both
secular and religious, in the face of com-
mercialism and greed. When first offered
to the public in a post-World-War-II
America, these films would have been an
attempt at healing. In todays society,
theyve become a necessary reminder.
For Capras protagonist, George Bailey,
brilliantly portrayed by James Stewart, the
challenge is to believe in himself as much
as in the good will of others. Devoted to
his family and generous to the townsfolk,
Baileys life comfortably unfolds in fiction-
al Bedford Falls just outside the shadowy
reach of his nemesis,
Henry Potter, until a
simple oversight
plunges Bailey into
near-ruin and self-
doubt so that he wish-
es hed never been
born. When his wish
comes true and Capra
drops us into a night-
marish Bailey-less
world, both our beliefs
and the protagonists
are tested by the
guardian angel
Clarence looking to
earn his wings.
Similarly, Miracle
on 34th Street explores
the truth behind
whether or not the
elderly character
played by Edmund
Gwenn is the Kris
Kringle aka Santa
Claus. Seatons screen-
play adaptation of a
Valentine Davies story
never offers explicit
evidence of Kringles
Santa-like abilities,
only his treatment of others in a fair and
respectful way. But we never doubt that
who this is because, when juxtaposed
against the business and politics that mir-
ror those of Potter, we know these are the
values that need to triumph. Christmas
isnt just a day, its a frame of mind,
Kringle tells one character, and thats
whats being changed. It seems were all
so busy trying to beat the other fellow in
making things go faster and look shinier
and cost less that Christmas and I are get-
ting lost in the shuffle.
Kringles is an uphill battle, not only
against the greed of corporations but the
rationalism of characters like Doris
Walker, an upper-echelon Macys employ-
ee who hires Kringle to act as the depart-
ment stores resident Santa and raises her
precocious daughter, Susan, in a world
void of imagination. This very outlook
eventually places Kringle on trial. Its a
challenge to his identity but also a threat
to childrens belief in the spirit of
Christmas. Its not just Kris on trial,
defense attorney Fred Gailey explains to
Doris, its everything he stands for. Its
kindness and joy and love and all the
other intangiblesdont overlook those
lovely intangibles. Youll discover theyre
the only things that are worthwhile. Yet
the outcome of the court case is soon
determined, not by the values Kringle pro-
poses but by the self-interest of the busi-
ness and political moguls those values
oppose.
There is an affinity between Kringle
and Clarence. Each is resolute in his mis-
sion and serves as an example of his
beliefs. But most importantly, each is the
conscience of his respective film. We
would do well to heed their message. I

43.6% of children ages 3-19 were over-
weight or obese. We can speak to
children and their parents about eating
and living healthy, but if we dont pro-
vide the access and opportunity for
them to do so, we fail, said Emma
Lopez. As a long-time resident of
Vineland, it brings me incredible pride
to be a part of the change that is going
on in Vineland to combat childhood
obesity. From healthier school lunches
to safer streets to walk and bike, fami-
lies are seeing the difference and mak-
ing changes for a healthier lifestyle.

helping to build public/private partner-
ships within our community which
stress the importance of incorporating
daily activity and healthy food choices
into your everyday routine, Bermudez
continued. Working with partners like
the Vineland YMCA, the Rutgers Food
Innovation Center, the Vineland School
Board, various city departments, and
private businesses like corner stores
and bodegas, we can help change the
way our residents think about healthy
eating and exercising.

or me, the month of
December conjures up
all kinds of images from
Christmas past...the first time
I saw "How the Grinch Stole
Christmas"... watching my
mom decorate the sugar cook-
ies with red and green sprin-
kles....building a snowman
with my sister Linda in our
front yard on Karin Street,
both of us in our brown tweed
coats and red boots.... my dad
in his plaid jacket and cap put-
ting up the lights all around
the house.... the silver Christmas tree in
the big picture window with the colored
spotlight on it. I even remember one
Christmas when an elderly couple
stopped at our house to ask if they could
take a picture of the lighted display to
send to their son in Vietnam. We had a
great time living in that house and on
Christmas morning, I always woke up
ahead of everybody else... Mom said some-
times she would just have gotten into bed
when she'd hear me get up!
Every Christmas Dad would get great
gifts from all of his corporate contacts and
I really did like the fruitcakes! I got this
recipe for fruitcake cookies from celebrity
chef Ina Garten and I love it with a glass
of sweet wine! Happy Holidays!
Fruitcake Cookies
Oven to 350F
1/2 pound dried figs
1/4 pound raisins
2 ounces candied cherries, coarsely
chopped
2 ounces dried apricots, coarsely
chopped
1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons dry sherry
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon
juice
6 ounces chopped pecans
Kosher salt
1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at
room temperature
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup superfine sugar
1/3 cup light brown sugar, firmly
packed
1 extra-large egg
2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
Trim off stems of figs and coarsely
chop. In a medium bowl, combine the figs,
raisins, cherries, apricots, honey, sherry,
lemon juice, pecans, and a pinch of salt.
Cover with plastic wrap and allow to sit
overnight at room temperature.
In the bowl of an electric mixer cream
the butter, cloves, superfine sugar, and
brown sugar on medium speed until
smooth, about 3 minutes. Then add the
egg, mix until incorporated. With the
mixer still on low, slowly add the flour
and 1/4 teaspoon salt just until combined.
Don't over mix! Add the fruits and nuts,
including any liquid in the bowl.
Divide the dough in half and place each
half on a piece of waxed paper. Roll each
half into a log, 1 1/2 to 1 3/4-inch thick,
making an 18-inch-long roll. Refrigerate
the dough until firm. Cut logs into 1/2
inch slices. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until
lightly golden. I

Obituaries & Memorials
Ruth Larcombe, 82, of Vineland, passed
away on December 9. She was a lifelong
Vinelander and 1949 graduate of
Vineland High School. Ruth spent the
early part of her career as a writer for
the Atlantic City Press along with her
husband, who was a photographer.
After her newspaper career, she went to
work as a travel agent. She enjoyed
traveling and boating.
Susan Reyes, 48, of Vineland, passed
away on December 9. Susan loved fam-
ily dinners on Sundays, camping, cro-
cheting, and particularly spending time
with her grandchildren.
Joseph Donato passed away peacefully
on December 11. Raised in northeast
Philadelphia, he attended LaSalle High
School and graduated from Rutgers
University with a science degree in agri-
culture. He served as a security MP in
the Army for two years before moving to
Landisville in 1957. He was an agent
with Prudential Insurance for 28 years.
Josephs happiest times were spending
time with his family, playing golf,
pinochle, camping with his cousins, and
dancing to Motown and country music.
Franco DiLisciandro, 78, of Vineland,
passed away on December 13. Born in
Palermo, Sicily, his moved with his fam-
ily to Brooklyn, New York, before mov-
ing to Vineland in 1983. He and his fam-
ily owned and operated The Liss Bakery
and LaConca Dora Bakery. He was
known for introducing semolina bread
to the area. He was a hard worker but
always made time for his family whom
he loved spending time with. He was a
member of Christ the Good Shepherd
Parish.
Kay Carlson Santora, 70, of Vineland,
passed away on December 12. Born in
Duluth, Minnesota, she had moved to
the area in 1970. She was the office
manager for a medical office in
Vineland for many years and prior to
that, she was an insurance underwriter.
Kay enjoyed cooking, sewing, and work-
ing outide on her lawna nd flowers. She
was an avid golfer and Eagles and
Phillies fan. She cherished her one and
only granddaughter, Megan.

Eighty Students Inducted into National Honor Society
On November 20, the Delsea Regional High School National Honor Society
added 80 members to the organization. The induction ceremony was attended
by parents, teachers, and administrators. The evening, organized by the NHS co-

Magdaliz Roura is the founder
and leader of Magdaliz and Her
Latin Ensemble Crisol, which is
Spanish for melting pot.
Roura is a Puerto Rican musician,
singer, music therapist, dancer, educa-
tor, and a medical and legal interpreter.
The ensemble has been performing
in Philadelphia and the greater
Delaware Valley area since 1997. They
are dedicated to the interpretation of a
variety of folk and traditional musical
genres from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico,
Venezuela, Colombia, and otherparts of
Latin America and the Caribbean.
Among the styles they perform are
romantic Puerto Rican boleros, ener-
getic Mexican mariachi music, feisty
Cuban Sones, sensuous Columbian
cumbias, contagious Dominican
meringues, and jazzy Brazilian bossa
novas.
All proceeds from the concert benefit
the Friends of the Bridgeton Library. The
Friends provide the entire book budget
for the library, as well as funding for
numerous childrens programs.
Funding for this event was made pos-
sible by a grant from the Cumberland
County Cultural & Heritage
Commission.

International Festival at
Landis School
Landis Intermediate School held its
Second Annual International Festival on
December 5, featuring Asian-themed
food, music and art.
Using garden vegetables grown in
their Sun Seekers Butterfly Garden and
Frog Pond, the 4H Art, Nature, and
Gardening Club carefully selected dikon
radishes and Asian cabbage to make
Korean Kimchi and tamari, using the
fermenting process. Landis staff mem-
bers were able to sample these delica-
cies by judging the Korean Kimchi
taste-testing competition.
According to Donna Grasso, advisor
of the 4H club, the students have spent
two years growing healthy vegetables
for nutritious menus based on the initial
suggestions of Noel Bennett, the

Schools/School Wellness Committee.
The worldly celebrations included
Asian decorations, interest items, music,
activities, food, and refreshments. On
display were framed Asian prints and
student art work in an American style
with an Asian influence, such as deco-
rated Asian egg ornaments and sketches
for future oil paintings. A Chinese
Dragon paraded around the school
during the festival, promoting a
'guessing game'.
Also on display was a prelimi-
nary student designed cookbook
entitled "The Foods Landis Kids
Like to Eat" - a Creative Cultural
Celebration, containing the favorite fam-
ily recipes of 6th grade students.
There was also a collection for
"Pennies for Playgrounds", a way for
children in New Jersey to make a differ-
ence for who were affected by
Hurricane Sandy. Through the joint ini-
tiative of the New Jersey Education
Association (NJEA) and The New Jersey
Firefighters Mutual Benevolent
Association (NJFMBA), school children
have already donated enough pennies
and spare change to rebuild over a
dozen playgrounds in New Jersey.
All of the events were funded by an
additional FAST (Families and Schools
Together) grant provided by the
Vineland Education Association (VEA)
and NJEA.
