Evangelism – Part 3
Introductory Remarks
In this study we will see Satanic Deception at its extreme.
Sometimes we observe Satan get into a church congregation and cause
a lot of heartache, but there is no more disappointing time than when,
as a pastor, some church member comes to me and says: “Pastor; I
just don’t believe what you preach and we are going to join some
....(some false cult or follow some false teacher).” This has happened
to me and I get a cold sweat just to think of facing another person like
that.
At these times the fear and anger of losing a badly needed family
causes most of us to lash out at the cult and condemn the group
without sound reasons (I know – I have done this -does this sound familiar: “Why! That’s just out’a Hell.” -or:
“You look better going than ya’ did coming anyway!”)
Over the years I have been able to study this issue and am able to bring some experience to this subject
that I hope will clear the fog away and help answer the questions that come with the goal to restore the
confused to a walk that is Biblical and sound. At this point in the introduction I must remind the reader of the
scripture that says: “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one...”
(Gal. 6:1). This is a great responsibility and I pray that these notes can be used with much prayer to equip us
to meet the growing challenge of this day of FALSE-ness.
Cults and False Teaching
The word “CULT” is a difficult word to define. The Webster’s Dictionary does not offer the force that
we know to be in the word as it is used in our day (Cult- (the best entry) #2: a system of religious beliefs and
ritual; also: its body of adherents). Harper’s Bible Dictionary offers a better definition: “Systems of worship
centering in devotion or homage to a person or an object.”
There have only been three basic systems of worship. 1)Worship that is centered upon a god of many
gods. 2)Worship that is centered on a person that was deified. 3)Worship that is centered upon the only
true GOD – the FATHER. Satan has used a two pronged instrument to divide the peoples of the world from
GOD and true devotion. If a people go in either of these directions it leads to pain, suffering, and Hell. The
light of the Gospel has shined in all days since that early day in the garden at the time of the fall of the race.
Without the new birth, all men are at the mercy of the forces of darkness. Even the saved are sometimes taken
in by the deceptions of Satan. Let us look at an amazing passage in Ezek. 8:7-18:
“A Hole In The Wall...”
I- Worship of creeping things- (8:10-12)
II- Worship of Tammuz- (8:13-14)
III- Worship of the Sun- (8:15-16)

-1-
The Means of Evangelism
Evangelism is the very heart of God’s work among the human race! There is no greater mission, of the
several missions of the church, that commission deserves more attention. The souls of mankind and the
contemporary ministry are in this vital operation. The truth has become abundantly clear that alternative forces
have become active in “evangelistic” action that threatens the very make-up of our religious existence.
We must return to the work of the evangelist who seeks the salvation of individuals. There is a great need
in our day that churches return to a love and concern for the lost in our society. Protestantism is shrinking from
2/3 of the population of America in 1900 to 1/3 by the beginning of this century. No country in the world has
as great a percentage of its population attending church today as a decade ago. Between 80% and 85% of all
churches in America are either plateaued or declining.
Cults are responding to the void. Recently, TIME reported that “by any statistical standard, Spencer W.
Kimball’s reign as President, Prophet, Seer, and Revelator of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
was a triumph. During his 12-year ministry, the Mormon Church nearly doubled...to 5.8 million members...and
doubled its force of short term missionaries to 30,000. In 1900 there were 27 churches for ever 10,000
Americans. In 1985 there were only 12 churches for every 10,000 Americans...” and it grows worse with the
passing of time.
There are approximately 340,000 churches in America. Based on the best estimate and research, we could
double the number of churches without over-churching America. America is a pluralistic society, with sub-
cultures as isolated from the Gospel spoken in English as we would be if next Sunday’s sermon were
delivered in Swahili. One hundred million persons in the U.S. have been identified with 200 language/culture
groups other than Anglo-American. Some U.S. people-groups are totally un-evangelized: 27 million cultist,
3 million Muslims, 2.4 million Hindus, to name a few. Other groups are essentially by-passed by the Gospel:
35 million handicapped, 10 million alcoholics, 6 million Jews, 1.4 million Native-Americans, and 2.5 million
French-speaking persons and 12.5-20 million Hispanic (Spanish speaking) peoples.
Most American churches are unaware that black Americans (26 million) are only 30% evangelized, while
Blacks in Africa are 50% evangelized. Reports are that churches are losing 2,765,000 members per year to
nominalism or unbelief. Thus 3,500 to 4,000 churches die every year. If a soul winning revival does not come
to America we have seen the end of Christian life in this country.
A Comparison of Christianity with the Major False Religious Cults
The word “Christian” comes from the Greek word “christianos” (Strong’s #G5546 = CristianoV) –
the “os” ending is the nominative inflection – it is derived from the word “christos” (Strong’s #G5547 =
CristoV), or Christ, which means “anointed one.” A Christian, then, is someone who is a follower of Christ.
The first use of the word “Christian” in the Bible is found in Acts 11:26, “And the disciples were called
Christians first in Antioch.” It is found only twice more in Acts 26:28 and 1 Peter 4:16. However, it is
important to note that it is the true Christ that makes someone a Christian, not the Mormon “Christ” (brother
of the devil), or the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ “Christ” (Michael the Archangel), the New Age “Jesus” (a man in
tune with the divine Christ Consciousness), etc. The true Christ is God in flesh: Jesus. The word Immanuel
(Emmanuel) is the name for Jesus Christ meaning “God with us.” (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:23). This very basic
concept concerning the person of Jesus Christ can be used to illustrate the problem created by the false Cults.
Christianity, in general terms, is a religion based on belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. God revealed
himself to man through Christ, who is seen as a prophet. Numerous Christologies, or theological
understandings of Christ, have been developed. The historical reality of his life is understood, although treated
differently in relation to the understanding of Christ as divine. Through his redemptive act, salvation is
possible for man to attain. Different churches vary on the process of salvation.
Christianity is an historical religion, based on Judaism but shaped by the Western world. The Ecumenical
movements today are attempting to unite the Christian churches in an effort to make Christianity seem to be
the same in all cases. However, Baptist are a smaller group that never reformed and continues in the order
of the first century churches. It would not be accurate to call Baptist “Protestant” even though Baptist are

-2-
Christian. There is a line of truth that is fundamentally required in order to be qualified as “Christian.”
A Cult is a religious group that follows a particular, deviate, theological system, usually a false position.
In the context of Christianity it is a group that uses the Bible but distorts the doctrines that affect salvation
sufficiently to cause salvation to be unattainable. A few examples of cults are Mormonism, Jehovah’s
Witnesses, Christian Science, Islam, Unity and many more.
Over 80% of the membership of the cults is composed of (un-converted) ex-Christians who were once
members of orthodox denominations. These un-converted, false professors have become more common as the
failure to preach the aggressive evangelistic Gospel has become more ordinary. Christians must be grounded
in the Word of God if they are to avoid suffering the same fate (Heb. 5:12-14). We must be sure of our beliefs
and be able to back them up with the Bible (1 Peter 3:15; Col. 4:6). The cultist often speaks the Christian’s
language (Matt. 7:15:23; 1 Cor. 11:13:15) but he worships “another Jesus” (2 Cor. 11:1-4).
The Bible warns of the rise of false religions in our day (the last days). (See 2 Tim. 3:1-9; 4:1-6; 2 Peter
2:1-3, 18-19; 1 Tim. 4:1-3; 1 John 4:1-6). Many of them appear to be “Christian” but they have redefined
biblical terminology into a language that is completely foreign to the Bible. Do not be deceived by religion.
Satan has his own church (Rev. 2:9), complete with its own apostles, prophets, pastors, and teachers (2
Cor.11:13-15). Through them, the cultist presents a false “gospel” (Gal. 1:6-9) about a false “Jesus” (2 Cor.
11:4) by means of a false “spirit” (2 Cor. 11:4; 1 John 4:1-3). Know the truth (the Word of God) and the “truth
shall set you free” (John 8:32).
There can be seen a clear picture of similarity that runs through the cults. There is a “Spirit of Error”
(“But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” Matt. 15:9; “Beware
lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of
the world, and not after Christ.” Col. 2:8; “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matt. 7:20) and
a “Spirit of Truth” (“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because
there is no light in them.” Isa. 8:20; “Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man
whatsoever is right in his own eyes.” Deut. 12:8; “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro,
and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie
in wait to deceive;” Eph 4:14) to be seen in the practice of the cults when compared to the Bible believing
Christian. It seems that an investigation of this matter reveals a pattern that is repeated again and again with
the invention of an ever increasing number of false cults. A much larger study could be made to cover many
more cults.
— Cult Fact Files —
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening
wolves.” (Matt.7:15) (see also verses 15-23)
“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” (II Cor.11:14)
“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have
continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.” (I John
2:19)
“And HE is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
(I John 2:2) (For the meaning of the word “propitiation” see the note at Rom.3:25 in the Old Scofield
(1914 Ed.) Reference Bible)
As has been seen in the past pages, the cult problem is a massive one. Our work has brought us to this
point in an effort to lead the reader to seek a burden for the lost and misguided generation that exist today.
(Rom.9:1-3). We need to see the much needed method, provided for in the Word, of dealing with False
Doctrine. Patterns can be seen and there can be a similarity that runs through most cults. Below we have
several “Cult Fact Files” that give information on these false systems.
I- The study of Christianity and Buddhism – Buddhism is a philosophy of life expounded by Gautama
Buddha (“Buddha” means “enlightened one”), who lived and taught in northern India in the 6th Century
B.C. The Buddha was not a god and the philosophy of Buddhism does not entail any theistic world-view.
The teachings of the Buddha are aimed solely to liberate sentient beings from suffering.

-3-
Gautama Buddha taught the four noble truths: that there is suffering, that suffering has a cause, that
suffering has an end and that there is a path that leads to the end of suffering (The Noble 8 Fold Path). He
saw that all phenomena in life are impermanent and that our attachment to the idea of substantial and
enduring self is an illusion which is the principle cause of suffering.
Anatta is the view that there is no enduring self. All phenomena are conditioned – have a beginning
and an end – so there is nothing to which they can attach. Suffering arises from the illusion that
impermanent conditioned states are permanent and can be possessed by a “self”.
Moreover, there is no self or soul which carries on after death. Instead we are merely a collection of
groups of grasping (or khandha) which are in a continual state of flux. Rebirth is possible only because
we are driven by our desires and volitions. Freedom from self liberates the heart from greed hatred and
delusion and opens the mind to wisdom and the heart to kindness and compassion. Wisdom comes from
understanding the three characteristics of existence
* all conditioned phenomena are impermanent
* all conditioned phenomena are not personal,
* attachment to desire for impermanent phenomena leads to suffering
“Right Understanding” of the impermanent, non-self nature of phenonmena and that attachment to them
leads to suffering brings about “Right Thought”, i.e. the aspiration or intention to be liberated from
suffering and to understand the truth.
The deepening of wisdom is enhanced when the lifestyle and mind are calmed through the practices
of Morality (Sila) and Concentration (Samadhi). The Four Sublime States (Brahma-vihara) “abidings”
for the mind and heart are:
* Kindness towards all beings– (metta)
* Compassion towards those who are suffering – (karuna)
* Sympathetic Joy towards others – (mudita)
* Equanimity toward friend and foe – (upekkha)
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God is omniscient and omnipotent (Job 42:2; Psa. 115:3; Matt.
19:26).
– Buddhists flatly deny the existence of a personal God.
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that He is the unique Son of God who died for mankind’s sin (Matt.
14:33; 16:16; John 1:34; 9:35–37; Rom. 5:6–8; 1 Cor. 15:3).
– Buddhists only admit that He was a great teacher, less important than Buddha.
C) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God sin is any thought or deed contrary to the will of God.
Mankind is spiritually dead in sin (Rom. 3:10, 23; 5:12; Eph. 2:1).
– Buddhists teach that sin is anything which hinders mankind’s progress. Each person is responsible
for his or her own sin.
D) Salvation
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Salvation is through Christ’s efforts only (Acts 4:12; Eph.
2:8–10; Titus 3:5).
– Buddhists teach that Salvation is by self-effort only.

II- The Study of Christianity and the Cult Called Christian Scientists – The Church of Christ’s, Scientist
is a false religion cult founded by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) in Boston in 1879. Faith healing is
central, as health is considered a spiritual reality. Membership totals are not published.
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) pioneered new ideas about spirituality and health. Inspired by her own
experience of healing in 1866, Eddy’s spent years in Bible study, prayer, and research into various healing
methods. The result was a system of healing she dubbed Christian Science in 1879. Her book, Science and
Health with Key to the Scriptures, broke new ground in the understanding of the mind-body-spirit

-4-
connection. She went on to found a college, a church, a publishing enterprise, and the respected
newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor.
The faith teaches that God, Father-Mother of all, is completely good and wholly spiritual, and that all
God’s creation, including the true nature of every person, is the flawless, spiritual likeness of the Divine.
Since God’s creation is good, evils such as disease, death, and sin cannot be a part of fundamental reality.
Rather, these evils are the result of living apart from God. Prayer is a central way to come closer to God
and heal human ills.
Christian Science teaches that these and other spiritual facts undergirded Jesus’ healing work - and
form the basis on which others can heal physical and spiritual problems today. Jesus’ ministry is their
paradigm for healing and demonstrates the centrality of healing to salvation. Christian Scientists pray to
realize more of the reality of God and God’s love daily, and to experience and help others experience the
harmonizing, healing effect of this understanding.
For most Christian Scientists, spiritual healing is an effective first choice and, as a result, they turn
to the power of prayer in lieu of medical treatment. Government authorities have occasionally challenged
this approach, especially in certain circumstances where they have interpreted this as withholding medical
treatment from minors. However, there is no church policy mandating members’ health care decisions.
Christian Science has no ministers. Rather, the Bible and Science and Health act as pastor and
preacher. Bible lessons are studied daily and read aloud on Sunday by two elected lay members of each
local congregation. Churches also hold weekly testimonial meetings, at which congregation members
relate experiences of healing and regeneration.
Eddy made Boston the headquarters of the church in 1881. In 1892, the church was named The First
Church of Christ, Scientist, or The Mother Church; local churches are considered branches. The Christian
Science Board of Directors runs The Mother Church and local branches function on a democratic basis.
The Mother Church and its branches operate under the guidance of the Manual of the Mother Church by
Mary Baker Eddy.
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God is a person. He created the universe, and created man in
His own image (Gen. 1:1, 26). God, as a person, sees, hears, speaks, remembers, knows (Gen.
6:5; Ex. 2:24; Num. 11:1; Psa. 79:8; 2 Tim. 2:19).
– Christian Scientists teach that God is an impersonal Principle, not a person. Mary Baker Eddy
(founder of the movement) writes: “God is all...that soul, or mind, of the spiritual man is God, the
Divine Principle of all being.”
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ is one with God. Jesus said, “I and My Father are one”
(John 10:30). Christians find much evidence of Christ’s deity in the Bible (John 1:1; Phil. 2:5–8;
1 John 2:22–23).
– Christian Scientists teach that Jesus was not God. Science and Health states: “Jesus Christ is not
God” (p. 361). Christian Scientists consider Christ an outstanding man, a great teacher, but deny
His deity.
C) Matter
– Bible Believing Christians agree that what man sees, touches, feels, smells, and hears is real. Jesus
demonstrated the reality of matter. He became flesh (John 1:14). He was hungry (Matt. 4:2). He
gave others food to eat (Matt. 14:16).
– Christian Scientists teach that only one Principle (God) exists and every thing else is an “illusion.”
There is no matter; material things (a person’s body, etc.) are not real.
D) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Sin is real. It originates in the heart and mind of man, and
separates man from God. The ultimate result of sin is death (Isa. 59:2; Mark 7:21–23; Rom. 5:12;
6:23).
– Christian Scientists teach that Sin, evil, and death do not exist. Science and Health states: “Since

-5-
God is All, there is no room for the opposite...therefore evil, being the opposite of goodness, is
unreal” (p. 234).
E) The Atonement and Resurrection
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ’s shed blood atoned for mankind’s sins (1 Peter 2:24),
and Christ died and rose from the dead in bodily form (John 20:16–17, 20, 27).
– Christian Scientists teach that Christ’s shed blood on the cross did not cleanse man from sin, and His
disciples were fooled into thinking Him dead when He was really alive in the tomb (Science and
Health, pp. 330, 349).

III- The study of Christianity and the Hindus – Hinduism is derived from the Persian word for Indian. It
differs from Christianity and other Western religions in that it does not have a single founder, a specific
theological system, a single system of morality, or religious organization. Its roots are traceable to the
Indus valley civilization circa 4000 to 2200 BCE. Its development was influenced by many invasions over
thousands of years. One of the major influences occurred when Indo-Europeans invaded Northern India
(circa 1500 to 500 BCE) from the steppes of Russia and Central Asia. They brought with them their
religion of Vedism. These beliefs became mixed with the indigenous Indian native beliefs.
During the first few centuries CE, many sects were created, each dedicated to a specific deity. Typical
among these were the Goddesses Shakti and Lakshmi, and the Gods Skanda and Surya.
Hinduism grew to become the world’s third largest religion, claiming about 13% of the world’s
population. They form the dominant religion in India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Hindus totaled 157,015 in
Canada’s 1991 census and are also propionate in the U.S.A..
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God is an external, personal, spiritual Being in three persons:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:13–17; 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14).
– Hindus teach that “Brahman,” the Hindu concept of God, is a formless, abstract, eternal being
without attributes. Brahman can be manifest as a trinity and as millions of lesser gods.
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ is the only begotten Son of God the Father. He is God
as well as man; He is sinless; and He died for our redemption (Mark 10:45; John 1:13–14; 8:46;
10:30; Heb. 4:15; 1 Peter 2:24).
– Hindus teach that Christ is just one of many incarnations, or sons of God. He is no more divine than
any other man, and He did not die for mankind’s sins.
C) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Sin is proud, independent rebellion that separates man from
God. It is falling short of the standards God has established in His Word. Sin must be punished,
and its consequence is death and eternal separation from God (Rom. 3:23; 6:23).
– Hindus teach that good and evil are relative terms. Whatever helps is good; whatever hinders is
vice or sin. People cannot help “stumbling” over these obstacles as they strive for self-knowledge.
If they cannot succeed in this life, they may try again in reincarnated form.
D) Salvation
– Bible Believing Christians agree that People may be justified only through the sacrificial death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ (Rom. 3:24; 1 Cor. 15:3).
– Hindus teach that people are justified through devotion, meditation, good works, and self-control.

IV- The study of Christianity and the Cult Called Jehovah’s Witnesses – The Jehovah’s Witnesses is a
sect begun in 1874 by Charles Taze Russell, founded upon the idea that only a select few (144,000) will
be spared the thousand-year judgment that will take place when Christ returns to earth. In the early days
of the religion, Russell declared that Christ had already returned but was invisible. Jehovah’s Witnesses
are excluded from having to salute the flag at public events, believing that allegiance is owed only to God
and not to anything of this world. Jehovah’s Witnesses put a strong emphasis on the study of the Bible by

-6-
laymen, and have developed a number of free or low-cost manuals for the student. These are frequently
distributed door-to-door or on street corners in urban areas. This proselytizing is an important part of the
religion. The Jehovah’s Witnesses’ house of worship is called “The Kingdom Hall.” another name for the
JW’s is “The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.” Most mainline denominations view the Jehovah’s
Witnesses as cults because of their altered position on the meaning and interpretation of the Bible’s text
and application of the main truths of Scripture (no blood transfusions, Bible translation, the use of alcohol,
the structure of the family, etc.).
When Charles Taze Russell, founder of the Watchtower Society, died in 1916, one Christian magazine
said; “With the passing of its founder, the movement he created and organized will probably drift along
for a time, to sink finally into the limbo of things forgotten.” Christians should have learned their lesson
by now. When fighting the cults, we are not fighting flesh and blood, but demonic forces. We cannot afford
to rest because one person has died. We must continue to “contend earnestly for the faith which was once
for all delivered to the saints.”
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God is an eternal, personal, spiritual Being in three persons
(the Trinity): Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:13–17; 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that God is one solitary being, Jehovah God. There is no Trinity.
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ is divine, a part of the Trinity, God Himself (John 1:1;
Col. 1:15–19; 2:9; 1 John 5:7–8).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Christ was not God; He was God’s first created creature.
C) Immortality
– Bible Believing Christians agree that people have an eternal, immortal soul (Gen. 1:26; 5:1; Job
32:8; Acts 7:59; 1 Cor. 11:7).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that people do not have an immortal soul. The soul is not separate from
the body.
D) Atonement
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ’s death was the complete payment for mankind’s sins
(Rom. 3:24–25; 2 Cor. 5:20; Col. 1:20; 1 Peter 2:24).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Christ’s death provides the opportunity for man to work for his or
her salvation, which will consist of perfect human life for eternity on an Eden-like earth.
E) Christ’s Resurrection
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ was physically resurrected from the grave (Luke
24:36–43; John 2:21; 20:24–29).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Christ was raised, not in bodily form, but as a “divine spirit.”
F) Christ’s Return
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ will return to earth physically (Zech. 12:10; Matt.
24:30; 1 Thess.4:16–17; Rev. 1:7).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Christ returned to earth – invisibly – in 1914 and now rules earth
from heaven.
G) Hell
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Hell is the place of eternal punishment for sin (Matt. 5:22;
8:11–12; 13:42, 50; 22:13; Luke 13:24–28; 2 Peter 2:17; Jude 13; Rev. 14:9–11).
– Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that there is no hell or eternal punishment. Those who do not measure up
to Jehovah’s standards will be annihilated – they will cease to exist.

V- The study of Christianity and the Orthodox Jews – Judaism is often defined as the religion and
civilization of Jews, involves all aspects of life. Difficult to define, it is primarily an historical religion,
which concentrates on the works of God throughout the past, present and future. It is a monotheistic

-7-
religion stressing man’s relationship with God. The foundations are the Old Testament and the Talmud
which show religion as part of everyday living. They cover civil laws as well as religious ones. The
religion and the community are interwoven. Through faith, good living and conduct, salvation may be
attained.
The origin of Judaism can be tied to the account in the Hebrew Bible of Abraham and his descendants.
According to the book of Genesis, God called Abraham out of the city of Ur in order to establish a special
people of God. From Abraham came Jacob, who settled the Israelites in Egypt. They flourished under the
protection and kindness of the Egyptians. As time passed however, later pharaohs changed in attitude
toward the descendants of Jacob, and the Egyptians put the Israelites into slavery. From here Cod called
Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery into a new land. Their journey unfolded into what is called the
Tribal League period, where twelve distinct tribes existed in political and spiritual partnership. After
much turmoil, the Israelites settled in the land which is modern Israel and established a kingdom. Central
to Judaism is the practice of the Law, which is contained in the Pentateuch, the first five books of the
Hebrew Bible. The Law calls for a priestly class to carry out necessary sacrifices for the sins of the
Jewish people. In addition to the written Law, there was an oral tradition of interpretation of the law that
gradually unfolded, eventually being written down as the Talmud. After the destruction of the Temple in
70 AD by the Romans, Jewish practice changed, with less emphasis on sacrifice and more on the
interpretation of the law. This was the period of Rabbinic Judaism, when the synagogue and the
interpretation of tradition become the primary focus.
Modern Judaism is split into three large groups--Orthodox (The Jewish branch that adheres to faithful
observation of the Mishnaic and Talmudic traditions. It is usually associated with the attempt to exclude
new influences on Judaism and to preserve the practice of medieval Judaism), Conservative (Founded in
1913, this branch of Judaism recognizes the authority of the Law in the Bible through the Talmudic and
later Rabbinic periods and even into modern times. It is sometimes said to combine the ideals of
Orthodoxy and Reform in agreeing to the principle of progress yet holding to tradition), and Reform
Judaism (A shift in Jewish thinking that adapted to the change brought about by the European
Enlightenment. Abraham Geiger (1810-1874) was the principal instigator. Revelation and tradition were
not considered fixed or even binding in all matters). They mainly differ in the practice of ritual
observances and the use of Hebrew in services. Some beliefs are formulated differently in each group.
The corrupted religion presently followed by unbelieving Jews is a corrupt mixture of O.T. teaching
and human tradition. There is a powerful move on the part of many professing Christians to accept
unbelieving Jews as God’s children, merely because of their Old Testament heritage and their natural
standing as children of Abraham. This move is evidenced on every hand. There are three major problems
with this religion as seen today: 1) Judaism is a man-made religion which has rejected the Son of God,
Jesus Christ. (Rom. 9:1-8; 10:1-5 “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to
establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”); 2)
Judaism is a Christ-rejecting, Christ-hating religion. (John 6:40); 3) Judaism is a temporary religion. The
Bible prophesies that there will come a day when the nation Israel will receive Jesus Christ when He
returns from Heaven in power and glory (Zec. 12:9-10; 13:1,6).
Christians, do not be deceived into thinking that unbelieving Jews are God’s children, or that they have
a living faith. They are dead, lost in trespasses and sin; they are in unbelief. This is what the Bible says,
and this is what we must believe. Judaism is a dark error and deep rebellion. Let us not fail them, but
proclaim to them Salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ, “for both Jews and Gentiles are all under sin” and
“there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call
upon him” (Rom. 3:9; 10:12).
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that there is one God, existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit –
the Trinity. Within the one “essence” of the Godhead there are three persons who are coequally
and coeternally God (Matt. 3:13–17; 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14).
– Orthodox Jews teach that the Godhead consists of only one person. “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our

-8-
God, the Lord is one!” (Deut. 6:4).
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ is the only begotten Son of God, the Messiah predicted
in Isaiah 53. Though part of the Godhead, He became a man, lived a sinless life and died to
redeem all mankind from sin (Mark 10:45; John 1:13–14; 8:46; 10:30; Heb. 4:15; 1 Peter 2:24).
– Orthodox Jews teach that while some Jews may accept Jesus as a good teacher of ethics, they do not
accept Him as Messiah because: (1) He did not bring lasting peace; (2) He claimed to be God.
Jews believe the Messiah will be a human sent from God to deliver Israel from oppression, not
a divine being sent to save individuals from personal sin.
C) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that through the sin of Adam, all humans are born as sinners
(original sin) (Psa. 51:5; Rom. 5:12). All people are condemned before God for their sin: proud,
independent rebellion against God in active or passive form (Rom. 1:18–23; 3:10, 23).
– Orthodox Jews teach that people are not born in original sin nor are they born good. They are born
free, with the capacity to choose between good and evil. Each person is accountable for himself
or herself.
D) Salvation
– Bible Believing Christians agree that mankind is justified before God and obtains salvation through
the atoning death of Christ on the cross. Salvation is a gift of God through faith (Rom. 3:24; 1 Cor.
15:3; Eph. 2:8–9).
– Orthodox Jews teach that anyone, Jew or not, may gain salvation through commitment to God and
moral living. Judaism looks forward to an afterlife; however, it does not stress preparing man for
the next world as much as guiding ethical and moral behavior in this present life.

VI- The study of Christianity and the Mormons – The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints (The
Mormons) is the major cult that is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. The founder was Joseph Smith
and Brigham Young; for which their university is named. They send “missionaries” throughout America
and the world (In exchange for tuition to the University) to spread the church’s doctrine. Besides the Bible,
they use contains the “Book of Mormon” to support their false teachings. Mormon theology is basic
synergism.
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God is uniquely eternal and all powerful, the only such being
in existence (Psa. 145:13; John 4:24; 1 Tim. 1:17).
– The Mormons teach that God is a material creature who was once human. We who are now human
can also, someday, become gods.
B) The Bible
– Bible Believing Christians agree that The Bible, given by God’s Spirit, is complete in itself and
needs no additions. In fact, additions to the Bible are forbidden (Deut. 4:2; 12:32; Prov. 30:5–6;
Gal. 1:8; Heb. 1:1–2; Rev. 22:18–19).
– The Mormons teach that the writings of Joseph Smith are divinely inspired additions to the Bible.
C) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that people are not godlike, but are sinful and separated from God.
They can have a relationship with God only through faith in Christ. Apart from Christ, they are lost
(John 1:29; Rom. 5:12–19; 6:23; Gal. 3:13; Eph. 2:1–2).
– The Mormons teach that humans are progressively becoming gods. Adam’s sin in Eden was
necessary in order to provide parentage for the spirit children of God who were ready and waiting
for the experience of earth life.
D) Salvation
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Salvation is a free gift provided by the grace (unmerited love)

-9-
of God for all who believe and accept His plan (John 12:26; 14:1–3, 6; Eph. 2:8–9; 1 John 3:1–2).
– The Mormons teach that Salvation comes by works; all people will spend eternity on some level of
a multistoried heaven, the level being determined by the scope of each person’s good works.

VII- The study of Christianity and Muslims (Islam) – A religion founded by Mohammed, an Arabic man
who believed himself to be the fmal prophet. The truth of Islam was revealed by the one true Cod to
Mohammed, and once the revelations were written down, the writing was called the Koran. Islam
recognizes the truth of Judaism and Christianity, but only as interpreted through the Koran and Mohammed.
Central to Islam is the concept of Cod and law. God is a complete unity, completely holy, and demanding
of dedication and obedience. God is the uncreated one, and all else has been created and is dependent on
God. On a day in the future that only God knows, there will be a resurrection leading to judgment, some
being thrown into eternal fire and others entering the Garden. Some schools of Islamic thought hold that
the prayers of the Prophet for his followers will allow those not guilty of idolatry or apostasy to enter
paradise. Legal obligations in Islamic practice cannot be under-emphasized Sharia, or religious law,
touches the areas of family, inheritance, and ritual The primary Islamic obligations are called the five
pillars: (1) to pronounce the testimony “There is no other God but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet;”
(2) ritual prayer facing Mecca, which is performed five times a day (at dawn, noon, afternoon, sundown,
and evening); (3) almsgiving, of a fixed - percentage but varying according to the different law schools
and functioning as a governmental tax for the benefit of the community; (4) fasting during the month of
Ramadan; and (5) pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in one’s - lifetime so long as one is capable. The
fifiki pillar is indicative of the spiritual importance of geographic location. Like the city of Jerusalem in
Judaism, Islam gives spiritual importance to the city of Mecca.
It is no doubt that Mohammed did a great work to turn the peoples of the middle east to a holier life.
The world of his day was steeped in superstition and cults were many. Each local had its own city or
regional faith system and myth prevailed where truth should have been in force. Mohammed took it to be
himself that Moes predicted: “...A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like
unto me; him shall ye hear.” (Deut. 18:15, 18; 34:10; Acts 3:22; 7:37) It is clear that this promise was
fulfilled in CHRIST and it is faulty Theology to defend Islam on this matter.
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that there is one God, revealed in Scripture as Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. Within the one “essence” of the Godhead there are three persons who are coequally
and coeternally God (Matt. 3:13–17; 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14).
– Muslims teach that there is only one person in the Godhead (Allah means “the God”).
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; He is one with the Father; He
is the sinless redeemer of sinful man, through His death on the cross and resurrection from the
dead (John 1:13–14; 1 Cor. 15:3; Heb. 4:15; 1 Peter 3:18).
– Muslims teach that Jesus Christ was only a man, a prophet equal to Adam, Noah, Abraham, and
Moses, all of whom are below Mohammed in importance. Christ did not die for mankind’s sins;
in fact Judas, not Jesus, died on the cross.
C) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Sin is proud, independent rebellion against God in active or
passive form (Rom. 1:18–23; 3:10, 23).
– Muslims teach that Sin is failure to do Allah’s will, failure to do one’s religious duties as outlined
in the “Five Pillars of the Faith.”
D) Salvation
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ died for our sins (1 Cor. 15:3–4).
– Muslims teach that people earn their own salvation and pay for their own sins.

VIII- The study of Christianity and the Cult Called the Unitarians – Unitarianism the doctrine that God

-10-
is one and that Jesus was only human, in contrast to the orthodox understanding of the Trinity and the non-
divinity and humanity of Jesus. A doctrine that arose after the reformation, appeared in England in 1682,
and flourished in the 1700s at Harvard College in America. It is thought that in the early 1800s most of
the ministers in Boston were Unitarian. Classical Unitarianismshould be distinguished from contemporary
Unitarianism. Before the 20th century, Unitarians generally agreed that a personal God existed. Therefore,
classical Unitarianism was quite transcendent. Today, Unitarians usually do not think a belief in a God
of unity is important. Rather, emphasis is placed on personal freedom and tolerance with respect to belief
In fact, contemporary Unitarianism leans toward non-transcendence, or toward agnosticism or atheism.
As the church stepped further away from theological issues, attention was placed on personal satisfaction
through a good character, political reform, and education.
A) God
– Bible Believing Christians agree that God is revealed in the Bible as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
– the Trinity (Matt. 3:13–17; 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14).
– Unitarians teach that there is only one person in the Godhead. God is not a personal deity and the
term “God” refers to the living processes of nature and conscience at work in mankind.
B) Jesus Christ
– Bible Believing Christians agree that Christ is divine, a part of the Trinity – God Himself. Christ
frequently referred to Himself as God (John 8:12–30, 58).
– Unitarians teach that Jesus was no more or less divine than any man.
C) The Bible
– Bible Believing Christians agree that The Bible is divinely inspired and is the sole guide and
authority for faith (1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Tim. 3:15–17; 2 Peter 1:19–21).
– Unitarians teach that the Bible is a collection of myths, legends, and philosophical writings.
D) Sin
– Bible Believing Christians agree that People are inherently sinful and there is only one way they can
rid themselves of their sinful nature – through faith by the grace (unmerited love) of God (Eph.
2:8–9; 4:20–24).
– Unitarians teach that people are essentially good and can save themselves.

Conclusion
It has been said of the United States that it is “the melting pot” of the people of the world. And the contents
of that pot would not be complete unless it also included the religions of those masses that now make up the
populace of America.
The case that is made for the cult problem is to apply the test given in Gamaliel’s consultation in Acts
5:38-39: “...if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of GOD, ye cannot
overthrow it...” However; let it not be forgotten that Gamaliel’s advice is not sound Biblical theology; and
if followed in the real world of experience as steadfastly as it is urged, then we would have to recognize Islam
as “being of GOD,” because of its fast growth and large worldwide following. And so on we could go with
more examples of cults that grow fast and seem to be doing so good if we look at the numbers. (The Mormons
were only six people in 1830 and in 1982 it had grown to over 5 million) I must disagree with the axiom that
all roads that lead to GOD are good, and believe instead the words of CHRIST in John 14:6: “...I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the FATHER, but by ME.”
As we discuss “Cults” we must come to the point that we are in this lesson. We can not overlook the
movement afoot to blend all religions into one massive “WORLD CHURCH” (Ecumenicalism – the ultimate
Cult). Several movements are tools in this un-holy agenda. First we see the Catholic Church as it presses to
ecumenical-ize all doctrine and bring about world church and therefore world government. Then we endure,
on almost every hand, the “Secular Humanistic” movement that seeks to de-Christianize the society as we
know it, with an educational system that has “brain-washed” most that have been educated in the public
schools of 2009 (that is most of all you see at church, in the stores, in politics, and in power today). Then we

-11-
must see the “New Age” movement as it presents a real threat to traditional Christianity. This last of all
mentioned, but not least of all, attack calls itself the “NEW AGE” but it is a hark back to the dark past. We
have learned that “Modernism” is not modern and by the same token the “New Age” movement is not new.
The Christian should take courage to face these dark days with a joy of challenge and win many to the
SAVIOR of the lost of all sorts.
Let there be no mistake -False Doctrine Is Sin- and all sin is to be judged in the day that we must all face
(Heb.9:27). It is hard to understand why all these cultic and occult errors can continue without GOD’S wrath
to destroy them. It is a great mystery!! (The Mystery described -Matt.13:24-30; and the Mystery explained
vs.36-43)
The Mystery of Iniquity -And- the Mystery of Godliness
(2 Thes..2:7; 1 Tim.3:16)

III- The WORK of MYSTERIES in you
A- A Mystery Can Guide
B- A Mystery Can Influence (2 Sam.13:3 “...Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab... and Jonadab
was a very subtle man.”)
C- A Mystery Can Condemn (Prov.14:12; 16:25; **18:17)

11- Added to Patience (2 Peter 1:6)
12- Added to Brotherly Love (2 Peter 1:7
13- HOLY CONVERSATION (2 Peter 3:11)
The Old Paths
(“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way,
and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” Jer.6:16)
There seems to have been a clear path in some ancient time (if anybody has come along that path, surely
there could have been others if they had wished to). After a few generations have passed the path had become
an unmarked and uncharted course.
I- Proposed in the Bible (Isa. 30:21 “...walk ye in it...”)

-12-
II- Preferred in the past (Psa. 122:1 “...glad...”
III- Profitable in the present (Titus 2:12 “...present world...”)
In the days of our lives we live among a very confused population of people who will not fellow the OLD
PATHS and can not be instructed as to the LANDMARKS.
Landmarks
(Deut.27:17 “Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour’s landmark. And all the people shall say AMEN.”)
GOD placed a sharp rebuke in HIS word concerning the “Landmarks” and so few today see the need of
a clearly marked path for others to follow. It is the determined teaching of the Bible that these
“LANDMARKS” are man’s only way and to veer from them is sure destruction in the cults. In the outline
below, see how the “LANDMARKS” that GOD has placed may apply to us today.
I- The Landmark of pure religion (see Job 24:2) (James 1:26).
II- The Landmark of the family (see Prov. 23:10) (Eph. 5:21-33).
III- The Landmark of separation (see Prov. 22:28) (1 Cor. 6:9-12).
IV- The Landmark of conversion (see Deut. 19:14) (John 3:7).
With the proper motive and armed with a little information about these Cult groups, the wise evangelist
can reach many of these who would otherwise go to Hell if you don’t tell them the words of life. In the face
of this dark hour there are many things that stand strong. Many things never shake S There ARE some things
to depend on. Many things should be shaken but the truth is sure and stedfast. (1 Cor 15:58 “Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as
ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”).
Best Scriptures for Those Involved with Cults
I- Essential issues common to cults
A) No leader given unique authority from God (2 Peter 1:20-21)
B) Salvation not through works (Eph. 2:8-9)
C) Salvation only through belief in Jesus Christ (John 20:31; 1 John 5:11-12)
II- For those involved in cults based on Western religions
A) The Holy Spirit is truly God (1 Cor. 2:10-12)
B) Jesus Christ is truly God (Heb. 1:1-2)
C) Jesus Christ successful in His mission on earth (Heb. 9:24-28)
III- For those involved in Eastern religions and cults
A) As to beliefs in common in Eastern religions
1- God is distinct from creation and not a part of everything (Gen. 1:1)
2- God and Christ are not created, but always existent (John 1:1-3)
3- God not a part of a human being until there is faith in Christ (Rom. 3:22-23)
B) For those involved in Transcendental Meditation
1- Ignorance of God, not self, is the problem of humanity (Rom. 3:9-12)
2- Happiness arising from serving God, not from mindlessness (Matt. 5:6; Matt. 6:33)
C) For those involved with Krishna Consciousness
1- People born as human beings with only one life on earth; there is no reincarnated ( John 5:28-29;
Heb. 9:27)
2- Jesus is a blameless and perfect Savior (Heb. 7:26-27; 4:15)

There are many more cults that ought to be studied – I will leave the rest to you and others. I do not shrink
from this task but hope that others will take up the gauntlet and fight this good fight! (Please see also the
companion document on this subject bby this author, “A Glossary of Cult Terms”, as further study requires
more information.)

Suggested Bibliography of Cult Studies
In the preparation of this document the author has used many sources. The selection of these reference
books is from a large body of work that the author hopes to acknowledge and recognize. Many of the un-
noticed sources are from the publications of the cults themselves and I do not wish to expose the reader to
these dangerous sources that might be unsafe for the reader that might be weak in Faith. Also the author has
used the website “www.wikipedia.org” (the free, user compiled and edited encyclopedia) as a source of
biographical data, facts that are in standard use and basic word definitions. It is well known that Wikipedia
is suspect in some quarters of research because of the “open source” nature of its content. A solution is to
cross corroborate these findings with other sources where possible. (Other online sources suffer from the
same problem and some of the other services copy directly from “www.wikipedia.org” as a matter of policy
– “answers.com”, “ask.com”, etc. – We must use off-line sources where possible). Attempts to double source
these facts has been undertaken where possible. The author suggest that the reader do some of his own
research and contact me if errors are found.
The opinions are, unashamedly my own and I regret any bias but my predigests are tempered with my
passion for the Lord Jesus Christ and I have no apology for my positions. I don’t intend to “blame” these
positions on Christ but offer that orientation as my point of reference in matters of opinion. You, the reader,
are the judge of my biases. (Be gentle...).
All Scripture references are from the AV 1611, KJV of the English Bible. References to Hebrew or Greek
words are from the Masoretic text of the Old Testament and from the Textus Receptus of the New Testament
which underlie the Authorized Version of the English Bible. Other texts or versions of these texts are thought
to be perilous to the reader’s understanding and therefore have been excluded.
What follows is a partial Bibliography of some of the works used or consulted in this current project. The
many books on these matters would exhaust our space here. It is hoped that you will find many others as I fully
acknowledge my dependance on many overlooked sources.
General Bibliography — Books On Soul-winning
The student is directed to this list of books only as a useful guide to outside reading. After all is said and
done no one can teach you HOW to win souls – the only lesson that can be imparted is that you SHOULD win
souls. It’s kind of like breathing – I can’t tell you HOW but you had better do it. So you see this short list will
only supplement that which comes through our relationship with the LORD GOD in prayer and service.
