By Maneesh Tekwani
This Year in Humanities we are learning about different business and corporations. We have been thinking about the different companies and their impacts on the surrounding communities, in order to do so have to answer this question, To what extent are the practices of the company impacting consumers and their communities around the world? We had also made a SWOT Analysis on the company we were given to help us identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats that face the company. The Company that I have chosen for this Task is Nestle and below you can view my work:

6. How does it sell the good or service to consumers? Nestle delivers their goods/products via network of rail roads and sea to increasing urban population. Almost, daily more tones 125,000 tonnes are being transported to customers from their factories and distribute centres helping provide products in highest quality and on time from the factory to the consumer. Links/ Resources: http://www.nestle.com/csv/environmental-sustainability/transport-distribution Is there any evidence of conditions for the companys workforce? If Yes What? There is evidence that the companys workforce exploiting their famers. In 2001, Nestle had been faced with a critism for buying cocoa from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, which could have been produced using child slaves. According to an investigation by the BBC, hundreds of thousands of children in Mali, Burkina Faso and Togo are being purchased from their destitute parents and shipped to the Ivory Coast, to be sold as slaves to cocoa farms. The Ivory Coast is the biggest producer of cocoa globally. These children ages ranging in from 12 to14 years (and some are younger) were being forced to do hard physical labour from 80 to 100 hours a week, paid nothing, barely fed and mistreated regularly. In the widespread disturbance caused by the investigations, Nestl expressed its 'concerns' over the use of child labour but could not confirm that none of its chocolate was touched by slaves. There was a factory which had been opened in 1990 in China buys more than 200 000 tonnes of fresh milk locally each year. Though there are somewhat similar projects are in operation in India, Pakistan and Indonesia and have a beneficial influence on the general level of skills and commercial attentiveness in the local communities. Links/Resources: http://www.nestle.com/asset-library/documents/library/documents/people/people-development-review-en.pdf 8. How does the product or service influence the health and well-being of the consumers? Nestle Relates it to history and connects it with Henri Nestls biggest concern, which was health and safety for the society and say the Nestle have kept that as its major concerns for 150 years. Links/Resources: http://www.nestle-family.com/our-company/english/assets/downloads/The-World-of-Nestle.pdf 9. Are there any ethical questions, such as the abuse of human rights or the rights of animals? There is evidence that the companys workforce exploiting their famers. Links/Sources: http://www.corporatewatch.org.uk/?lid=240 10. What impacts do the companys operations have on the environment? Nestl has recently been visible regarding its part in persuading the British government not to vaccinate livestock during the Foot and Mouth disease crisis. The then Chief Executive of Nestl UK, Peter Blackburn, who is also president of the Food and Drink Federation, petitioned the government, which was apparently about to introduce a vaccination programme, and, along with the National Farmers' Union, who also opposed vaccination, managed to force a complete turnaround in policy. This is thought to be because Nestl's profits would be damaged by the loss of exports of powdered milk. It would probably have meant the closure of Nestl's factory in Dalston, Cumbria, which employs 500 people and is a major producer of powdered milk to developing countries.

ANALYZING NESTLES IMPACT ON CONSUMERS:

Below you can view my Response to this assessment of the question which was, To what extent are the practices of the Nestle impacting consumers
and their communities around the world? With more than 450 factories operating in 86 countries Nestle is world wildly known as the world's leading nutrition, health and wellness company. Their mission of "Good Food, Good Life" is to providing consumers with the best tasting, most nutritious choices in a wide range of food and beverage categories and eating occasions, from morning to night. Nestle is helping promote the worlds leading Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company. Nestls Vision seeks in order, to be a leading and competitive, Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company it is needed to deliver improved shareholder value by being a preferred corporate citizen preferred employer preferred supplier selling preferred products. Nestle is very well known company for selling products from food to beverages. Though, this company has several political impacts such as, factory construction, land acquisitions (for factories), closure of factories, safety incidents/industrial accidents, Major employer within region/community, contracted service providers, social unrest, water use, Pollution (Smells and noise from factories) and Health and awareness of the company. Theses stated above represent that the companys (Nestles) Practices are somewhat harmful towards that society and are impacting consumers in a bad way.

EVALUATION OF PROCESS:
Below you can view my evaluation of the process that I have followed for this assessment; this was made to help provide a detailed evaluation of the research process and its results:
The Checklist that was given to us help us to complete our assessment with ease by understanding what is need to be accomplish to do successful in this task. To start the task, I firstly created a well-organized Action Plan (In a table) to help me understand what is needed to be completed in the time I was given and help me make good use of the time. Once that Stage/Step of the Process was completed I had inserted/documented all the information received and written it in my own words on the Information/Notes Page organized with information below the question been given to find out more about. The Third Step that was needed to be completed was the step in which we all needed to do a C.R.A.P Test on all on the Links available to identify the whether we did successful in choosing sources for the assessment. After that we were needed to answer the research question for this task, To what extent are the practices of Nestle impacting consumers and their communities around the world? We did this to understand basically help identify the

19

Maneesh Tekwani Year 9B

Year 9B Humanities

28/11/13

benefits/disadvantages of the company and the impact the company has on the society around the world. During this whole process, we were needed toil out the checklist to help us check if we have successfully met the criterion on the assessment. After evaluating the Websites by the C.R.A.P (Current, Reliable, Author, Purpose), Re that I had used for this assessment I found that I was pretty successful in finding useful information as most of the websites that I had used were applicable sources. I found that the sources that I used were applicable and therefore were successful/helpful websites. This is because the met the most of the criterion because it was recent information that had been updated when needed and necessary, the information had several other websites referred, in order to make the facts found unbiased and reliable to use. The Author of the Work provided on the website was pretty well-known and therefore was providing trustworthy information. The Purpose of this wasnt to sell anything but was to help teach/educate you about the Nestle. I feel that in this assessment there were few strengths and weaknesses in the process of this assessment. I feel that the strengths that I had found during this process which were the CRAP test and the paragraphs, this is because the CRAP test was quite simple as all that was needed to be accomplished was to comment on the Currency, Reliability, Authority, Purpose of the sources used. I also felt that it was quite simple to write the two paragraph because I already knew what was needed to be written in the paragraphs and did so. Though there were few outlined strengths of this assessment there were few weaknesses. Few major weaknesses that were found in my process of this assessment were the SWOT Analysis and collecting information. Firstly, I felt that the SWOT Analysis for this assessment was a little complicated because I had to suggest few strengths, weakness, and opportunities and threats that Nestle face which was a little hard and was a bummer. Secondly, I felt that I wasnt as successful in collecting my information as I am not as great in using the Google search engine making the information I find somewhat irrelevant towards the topic. If I
were to come across this assessment once more, I would try to ask a little bit more help from Mr Phillip for the SWOT Analysis as he is an expert on the area and would try to learn how to use Google effectively so, that I would be able to find relevant results towards my topic.
