What is conscription?
Conscription: Compulsory enrollment of persons for military service
During WW1 Prime Minister Borden reintroduced the Conscription Bill (Military Service Act) due to minimal Canadian volunteers Conscription also happened during the Vietnam War in the 1960s

Why?
During WW1 after three years of fighting in 1917 the number of dead and wounded soldiers kept on increasing Voluntary enlistment dropped drastically because of plentiful jobs at home

Third
In Enders Game being a Third means you automatically go to battle school Though Ender did not have a choice Graff still questioned him so he did not feel forced into it. (basically volunteered)

Youre a Third, turd. Youve got no rights. (page 17)

Conscripts make good cannon fodder, but for officers we need volunteers, (page 20)

What happened during this Time?

All able men ages ranging from 18-45 were required to take part in war
Soldiers were forced to leave their families not knowing when or if theyd come back If they resented they would go to jail

Leaving home
Children like Ender would leave for Battle School know they arent going to come back for a long time They wouldnt see their families and homes until years later if you come with me, you wont be back here for a long time. There arent any vacations from Battle School. No visitors, either (page 21)

Opposition to the bill

Opposition was stronger by French Canadians Opposition to this bill was vehement, started dispute between French and English Canadians French Canadian Came under increasingly international criticism criticism for their lack in military response during the international war. After Conscription passed Citizens of Quebec expressed their outrage in a public revolt

Draft Resistance
Draft resistance was rare until the late 1960s when public opinion began to turn against American involvement in the Vietnam War.

During the Vietnam war Draft evasion and Draft resistance reached a historic peak

Opposition in Enders Game

Opposition was not strong in Enders Game Parents knew having a third child meant theyd belong to the Government

Student Activism Campuses became crucibles of

antiwar protest. Since the draft loomed over students futures, much student activism was concerned with the draft.

Students began burning their draft cards as acts of defiance.

Students Burning Draft Cards

Enders Childhood He didnt have many friends

Isolated Away from home All he focused on was how to win the war Hard work. Studies, just like school here, except we put you into mathematics and computers and much more heavily. Military history. Strategy and tactics. And above all, the Battle Room. (page 23)

Results of Conscription
Conscription enabled Canada to being successful in the war.
Caused tension between French-English Canadians Draft Resistance for the Vietnam War was successful Ender saved the world by defeating the buggers Ender was Bullied for being a third and Peters Jealousy toward him causes fights between them Ender was still scarred emotionally after the war was over
