Thermal Insulation

1.0 Abstract The purpose of this project is to identify the extent of waste material can be recycled to be used as thermal insulation. In this study we chose cork will then mixed with paper made egg casing. As we are aware, every day more and more use of waste and its best if we waste was used in all for a particular purpose. This could indirectly reduce costs, particularly in the use of thermal insulation in the industry.

1.0 Introduction

Heat transfer processes are classified into three types. The first is conduction, which is defined as transfer of heat occurring through intervening matter without bulk motion of the matter. Figure 1.1 shows the process pictorially. A solid (a block of metal, say) has one surface at a high temperature and one at a lower temperature. This type of heat conduction can occur.

Thermal insulation is the reduction of heat transfer between objects in thermal contact or in range of radioactive influence. Thermal insulation is the reduction of heat transfer ) between objects in thermal contact or in range of radiative influence. Thermal insulation can be achieved with specially engineered methods or processes, as well as with suitable object shapes and materials. Heat flow is an inevitable consequence of contact between objects of differing temperature. Thermal insulation provides a region of insulation in which thermal conduction is reduced or thermal radiation is reflected rather than absorbed by the lowertemperature body. Heat flow is an inevitable consequence of contact between objects of differing temperature. Thermal insulation provides a region of insulation in which thermal conduction is reduced or thermal radiation is reflected rather than absorbed by the lower-temperature body. The insulating capability of a material is measured with thermal conductivity (k). 2.0 Literature survey Regarding our research that study the rate of heat transfer of water placed in a stainless steel container. In this study, we tried to maintain the water temperature in the container with the use of thermal insulation from waste materials. The use of the thermal insulation to reduce heat transfer and cause the water temperature remains high temperatures during a long time (30 minutes). After the review, we chose coconut husk and palm leaf as thermal insulation materials. In the first layer, we use coconut husk to wrap the container. This is because the coconut husk is to have a high thermal resistance of 0.054 W/mK. In addition, the use of coconut husk is also very suitable because it is a material that does not cause pollution to the environment. Meanwhile, the use of palm leaf, we use the outer layer. The purpose of this
palm leaf is aimed at adding more heat transfer resistance. In addition, palm leaf can also prevent heat tranfer from easily detached. Therefore, the combination of both the insulation, heat the water in the container is kept at a high temperature in few hour.

By assuming the experiment is done in boiled state.

boiled water, ambient temperature, *stainless steel pipe (AISI 304) ==> *coconut husk, *palm leaf outer radius, inner radius, container + coconut husk, container + coconut husk + palm leaf height of container,

T1 = T2 = (k1 = 9.2 W/mK) k = 0.054 W/mK k = 0.011 W/mK r2 = 0.045m r1 = 0.048m r3 = 0.061m r4 = 0.125m L = 0.1m
