Introduction

This project will introduce you to the field of statistics, which is the branch of mathematics that is
concerned with the collection, interpretation and analysis of data.

Handling the data involves the following: -


1. Collection of data
2. Sorting data
3. Representing data in tables, charts or graphs.
4. Analysis of the results
5. Conclusions.

Arithmetic methods of handling data involve working out: -


1. Measures of central tendency such as mean, median and mode.
2. Measures of dispersion such as range

Different methods of summarising and displaying data in statistical charts and graphs inclusive of
the following: -
1. Tallies
2. Tables
3. Pie charts
4. Single and compound graphs
5. Line and broken-line graphs

Instructions

“How much do learners in the population surrounding me differ from each other?”

1. Using the questionnaire provided to complete this project.


2. Decide on a representative sample that will complete your questionnaires.
Your small group must be represented by all different kinds of people in the larger group.
For it to be truly representative of the whole community it needs to be a random sample. It
means you must not only perform the questionnaire with your classmates but you need to go
to a public place and ask every third or fourth scholar to complete the questionnaire.
3. Decide on how the data will be collected.
4. How will the data be analysed and displayed by you?
5. Compare your results with the results that can be found on www.statssa.gov.za or other
reputable Statistical website.
6. Using the assessment tool provided by your teacher to assess how you will be assessed on
completion of your project.
7. Write a report.

Writing the report


The following must be included in your report:

1. A title
2. Name of author and the date
3. A Statement of the purpose of the survey.
4. A description of the population sampled and the nature of the sample, a sample size must be
included.
5. The questionnaires used, as well as a sample of completed questionnaires.
6. A complete description of the results including appropriate Statistical methods
7. A brief summary of what you observed.
8. A bibliography listing the resources used to complete the project.
