Alicia Lenard CARD 548 Strategy Assignment Week 6 Professor Taylor December 6, 2013

Remaining marketable requires individuals to have insight into upcoming trends, organization and industry direction as well as a true understanding of their ability to align with these changes. For one to adequately prepare for career entry or career transition, one must be diligent with research and selfassessment. For this process to be effective, reviewing job search sites for number of positions in specific industries and qualifications is a key component. For this activity, I reviewed Monstor.com, Jobsweb.com, 6figurejobs.com and Higheredjobs.com. I have been in nonprofit leadership for several years and have been considering my future in regards to career growth, professional development and the sustainability of funding in the nonprofit sector. I am considering a transition into postsecondary education.

As a visual learner, I instantly notice the esthetics of things. There were some clear distinctions between Higheredjobs.com, 6figurejobs.com and the other sites. These two sites were much more organized in reference to information. Neither site had advertisements for other businesses but rather focused on presenting information key to their goals. Although each site had company overviews; these two sites provided a much more in depth depiction of the entire organization and its culture. Additionally, the format of Monstor.com and Highered.com was much more professional looking.

With the exception of 6figurejobs.com, all of the sites had adjunct positions in higher education. Highered.com and Jobsweb.com each had over 3,500 positions available whereas Monstor.com only had around 200. The adjunct positions that I reviewed were instructional positions. All had similar requirements; including previous experience teaching at college levels or similar settings and a graduate degree from an accredited university. Some adjunct positions in countries outside of the U.S. would consider instructors without graduate degrees in certain disciplines. Ironically, none of the positions that I reviewed had a requirement for practical work experience in the field.

Upon reviewing any career, salary is a factor for me. The salary range for adjunct instructors ranges drastically by location and status of college or university. Pay scale at community colleges ranges from

$2,200 to $4,500 per course and approximately $2,800 to $15,000 at universities. In my area salary ranges from $100 per pupil in courses that have less than six students up to $5,000 per class. Most adjuncts dont have office space on campus or benefits. Their positions are mainly contractual. The 6figurejobs.com site was interesting for positions nonrelated to adjunct positions. Of the nearly 5,000 jobs posted, almost 4,000 of them were from two companies; Microsoft and Deloitt.

This activity was useful for me. It encouraged me to consider the financial implications that I may encounter upon entry into postsecondary instruction if I was to be offered a lower wage. I met with a faculty recruiter as well during this assignment period and found out that the hiring to actual instruction process is very long and doesnt guarantee assignments. I am still interested in becoming an adjunct instructor but need to do further research on its viability to my lifestyle and needs.

Keller Career Services Prior to reviewing the career services site, I had assumptions that it would be similar to the programs that were offered by the graduate school I earned my first masters from. I didnt find their services helpful but found them somewhat amateurish. Upon researching Kellers site, I was intrigued by the depth of services that are offered for students and alumni. I was impressed that the career services team has credentials in this discipline and are considered experts. The website also listed a large number of high powered employers and included their website links. This is a very useful tool for job searching. I was slightly baffled by their 90 day of support platform. The site didnt disclose if that was the maximum time allotted for helping students. Overall, I thought the site was a useful tool.
