PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee IT/15, Software Engineering, with assistance from Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee QR/3, Software Quality Systems. It is identical with, and has been reproduced from, ISO/IEC 14102:1995, Information technology Guideline for evaluation and selection of CASE tools. The objective of this Standard is to provide organizations intending to adopt computer-aided software engineering (CASE) tools in support of their software life cycle processes, with a guideline for the consistent and effective evaluation and selection of such tools. This Standard contains processes, activities and tasks that are to be applied in identifying organizational requirements for CASE tools, mapping these requirements to CASE tool characteristics to be evaluated and, based on measurements of the defined characteristics, selecting the most appropriate CASE tool(s) from the available alternatives. The number of this Standard is not reproduced on each page; its identity is shown only on the cover and title pages. The term informative has been used in this Standard to define the application of the annex to which it applies. An informative annex is only for information and guidance. For the purpose of this Standard, the source text should be modified as follows: (a) (b) (c) The words this Australian/New Zealand Standard should replace the words this International Standard wherever they appear. A full point should be substituted for a comma where it appears as a decimal marker. References to international Standards should be replaced by references, where appropriate, to the following Australian or Joint Australian/New Zealand Standards: Australian or Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard AS 2645 Information processing Documentation symbols and conventions for data, program and system flowcharts, program network charts and systems resources charts

1 AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND STANDARD

Information technology - Guideline for the evaluation and selection of CASE tools

This is a free 9 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

Scope

This International Standard deals with the evaluation and selection of CASE tools, covering a partial or full portion of the software engineering life cycle. It establishes processes and activities to be applied for the evaluation of CASE tools and selecting the most appropriate CASE tools from several candidates. These processes are generic, and organizations must tailor them to meet organizational needs. The CASE tool evaluation and selection processes should be viewed in the larger context of the organizations technology adoption process. This International Standard provides: a. b. Guidance on identifying organizational requirements for CASE tools. Guidance on mapping those requirements to CASE tool characteristics to be evaluated. A process for selecting the most appropriate CASE tool from several tools, based on measurements of the defined characteristics.

c.

Primary users of this International Standard are organizations that intend to adopt CASE tools to support their software life cycle processes. CASE tool suppliers may also use this International Standard to describe characteristics of their CASE tools. This International Standard is not intended to apply to: a. Software engineering frameworks whose purpose is to provide mechanisms for data, control and presentation integration.
