Route: 31st August: the trip starts at Seville airport where we rent two vans. We drive from Seville directly to Doana ational Park. A quick stop in Hostal Cristina, our accommodation in El Rocio, and very soon we begin our birding walking along the marsh that by this time of the year is almost dry. At Puente de La Canaliega we have our first spanish specialities, 2 adults and 1 juvenile of the Spanish Imperial Eagle and the first Red-rumped Swallows. From there we cross the road to La Rocina Visitor Center where we see several species included 20 Iberian Blue Magpie, 80 Bee-eater, Sardinian and Dartford Warbler, Cettis Warbler, the introduced breeding Common Waxbill, Crested Lark, 2 Southern Grey Shrike and 5 Black Stork.

. 1st September: breakfast at Hostal Cristina at 7 and before 8 we are on the way to the sourrandings of Doana ational Park where many birds are gathering by this time of the year. Our first stop is near Villamanrrique where we have a Roller sitting on a power line. Not far from there we stop in a stepe-land area where we have a walk that produce 1 singing Quail, 6 Pint-tailed Sandgrouse, Short-toed and Crested Lark, 1 Melodious Warbler and 1 Short-toed Eagle. From there we go to Dehesa de Abajo. These place usually keeps water by this time of the year when most of the marshes of Doana are dry. That makes the places one of the best places for birding with thousands of birds. We have a great view of hundreds of White Stork, Flamingo, Glossy Ibis or Spoonbill. Also big numbers for Night and Great Heron, minimun of 6 Purple Heron and 10 Great Egrett. Here we find one of the goal species of the trip, 9 Murbled Duck! Other ducks seen are 30 Red-crested Pochard, 20 Shoveler, 3 Wigeon, 10 Common Teal, 30 Mallard, 1 female Gadwall and 1 juvenile Pintail. Within the waders hundreds of Black-winged Stilt, 50 avocet or 30 Ruff, 2 Gull-billed Tern and many Whiskered Tern. Also we have 2 males of the introduced Yellow-crowned Weaver that by this time of the year are breeding. After having lunch we pointed to the rice crops that are around the village of Isla Mayor. Many birds are foraging there although in September the rice is high and birding is not easy. Driving through the dirt roads we see many Squacco and Purple Heron, Glossy Ibis and White Stork, 3 Black Stork, Osprey, Marsh and Montagus Harrier, around 30 Green Sandpiper, Yellow Wagtail of the subspecie iberiae and many Zitting Cisticola. On the way back to El Rocio we have our first sighting of the trip of one Black-winged Kite.

2nd September: after breakfast in Hostal Cristina we point the Odiel Marshes in the town of Huelva. Odiel river flows into the Atlantic Ocean creating a bast marshes that atract thousand of waders during the Autumn migration. First stop is in Laguna de Calatilla that produces the Slender-billed and Black-headed Gull, Black-tailed Godwit, many Ringed and Kentish plover, Curlew Sandpiper and Dunlin. Our second stop is directly in the marshes with low tide and good light for birding. Here we have many species of waders included Oystercatcher, Little Ringed, Ringed, Kentish and Grey Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Dunlin, Black-tailed and Bar-tailed Godwit, Curlew, Whimbrel, Redshank, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, Turnstone and Ruff plus one Osprey. Following the road that cross the marshes we find Sanderling and Turnstone at the beach and 2 Little Tern. The road continues through a long dyke that goes into the ocean for several kilometers (Espign Juan Carlos I). There are two flat areas beside the dyke where hundreds of gulls are resting. Here we see Audouins, Yellow-legged, Mediterranean and Lesser Black-backed Gull and a flock of Common and Sandwich Tern. At the end of the dyke there is a lighthouse perfect for a quick seawatching that gives us 6 Gannet. On the way back to El Rocio, we stop at Parador de Mazagon where we drink a coffee surrounding by a flock of Iberian Blue Magpie. Later we stop in El Acebuche Visitor Center where we see yet another flock of Iberian Blue Magpie and many Red-rumped Swallow. We finish the day with a nice walk around the El Palacio de El Acebrn that produces some species as the Great-spotted Goodpecker, Pied and Spotted Flycatcher, Nightingale, Cettis Warbler, Treecreper, Great and Crested Tit or Chaffinch.

3rd September: early in the morning we walk to the border of the marsh in El Rocio to listen to the Red Deers yawning. On this day we leave El Rocio and Doana and lead to Tarifa. On the way, we stop in Brazo del Este where we stay birding during the morning. Brazo del Este is a bast area of rice crops at the East side of Guadalquivir river. In our firs stop at Ro Guadaira we have a very good sighting of a Black-winged Kite sitting on a power line and later, probably the same bird, hunting over the crops. Whe have also very good sigthings of the Pallid Swift, Little Owl and the Purple Swamphen. Along Brazo del Este we see most of the herons included Night (40), Squacco (7) and Great Heron (20), Little Bittern (1 juvenile), White (hundreds), Great (20) and Cattle Egrett (hundreds). Also hundreds of Glossy Ibis, White (20) and Black (4) Stork, Snipe, Wood and Green Sandpiper, Whiskered Tern, Kingfisher, Hoopoe, Sand Martin, Zittis Cisticole, Cettis Warbler, Yellow Wagtail (iberiae) and the introduced Golden Bishop. After lunch we drive to our accommodation in Hostal La Torre in Tarifa without time for any birding. 4th September: first day in Tarifa and the wind is very strong from the East so the raptors are not crossing the Strait of Gibraltar during this day. After breakfast in Hostal La Torre, we decide to walk through the Canuto del Guadalmes, one of the green valleys near Tarifa that are very good for raptor watching when the winds are strong as the birds are gathering here and waiting for better weather conditions. During this 3 hours easy walk we have very good sightings of Short-toed and Booted Eagle, Griffon and Egyptian Vulture, Black Kite, Goshawk and Sparrowhawk. The walk also produce some small paserines as Robin, Wren, Blackcap, Firecrest, Treecreper, Nuthatch, Grerat, Blue and Crested Tit, Chaffinch and Jay.

From there, we check the best watchpoints for the migration, first Cazalla and later Algarrobo. Despite the extremly strong wind in Cazalla we could see 40 Egyptian Vulture plus Black Kite, Short-toed and Booted Eagle. In Algarrobo the wind was not too strong and we can stay longer seeing our first Honey Busards and most of the previus species. From there, we drive Sierra de la Plata near Bolonia. Here, both species Little and White Rumped Swift have bred in recent years although not in 2013. Anyway, its still one of the best places in Europe for try them. We walk along the cliffs untill we reach the Cueva del Moro. At the end of the day we have a short shigting of one swift with white rump that seems to be a Little Swift. Unfortunately, the view is not good enough and we cannot confirm the species. In the area, there is a Griffon Vulture colony and we can see some of them sitting on the cliffs as well as two Egyptian Vulture in a small cave. Also here, we have 2 Blue Rock Thrush and Sardinian Warbler. Without any time for more birding, we go to our hostal. 5th September: early in the morning we go to Los Lances beach for an easy walk that starts in the town of Tarifa. These is a good place for waders, gulls and terns but from midday many kitesurfers are in the area so the best moment for birding is in the morning. This walk produces some waders as 3 Oystercatcher, Sanderling (100 aprox, one bird with colour rings), 10 Kentish plover, 3 Great Heron and 1 Flamningo. Within the gulls, 200 Yellow-legged, 5 Black-headed , 20 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 15 Audouins Gull (1 ringed) plus Sandwich and Common Tern. 2 Corys Shearwater are seen gliding over the see. On the way back to Tarifa we have some passerines as 7 Short-toed Lark, 4 Tawny Pipit, 6 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Zitting Cisticole, Northern Wheatear. We already have our first raptors crossing. Today the wind is no so strong and seems to be a good day for raptors. At 11 a.m. we go directly to Cazalla expecting many birds as this is the best time of the day (from 11 to 17). As we expected, hundreds of birds are crossing. Right after arriving to this place a huge flock of 850 White Stork is departing to Africa. The passage of Short-toed, Booted Eagle and Black Kite is continue. In Algarrobo we stay from 13:00 to 17:00 aprox. enjoying the great espectacle of raptors migration in what is probably the best day of this year in Tarifa. On this day 14000 Honey Buzzard (7000 while we are there) and 450 Short-toed Eagle passed are counted only in Algarrobo (personal comunication of Alejandro Onrrubia, Fundacin Migres). And here we have one of the goals of the trip, one adult male of Pallid Harrier is seen and photographed. This specie is considered a raritie in Spain and the record has been summited. Also 5 Marsh and 10 Montagus Harrier and 7 Sparrowhawk are recorded and 6 Common Kestrel at El Mirador del Estrecho. We go for a coffee at the cross of the Bolonia road. From the terrace we can see yet another flock of 200 White Stork and 1 Red Kite. Right from this place we finish the day walking through a nice area of farms with patches of wild olive trees where is known that the Rufous Bush Robin breeds. By now is late for this specie but the walk produces other species as Serin, Crested and Thekla Lark, 1 juvenile of Woodchat Shrike, Northern Wheatear and Chiffchaff.

6th September: we start the day with a birdwatching from Cazalla early in the morning. Short after, we go to Tarifa for a two hours boat trip with Turmares, a touristic company that are practicing a respectful whalewatching. Tha main objetive of this trips are the dolphins and the Killer Whale in the Gibraltar Strait but many seabirds can be seen. During our trip we have 11 Corys and 2 Balearic Shearwater, 3 Gannet, 20 Yellow-legged Gull and 10 Common Tern plus 3 groups of Long-finned Pilot Whale and a group of Bottlenose Dolphin. After the trip and a short walk in the town of Tarifa we go again to Cazalla for having lunch. Here we have very much the same species than the day before but in smaller numbers. From there we go to Laguna de La Janda that once was the biggest lagoon of Spain but today is just a big area with rice crops. Anyway is very good place for birding and many birds use the area for resting before crossing to Africa. Driving through the dirt roads and stoping every one or two kilometers we have hundreds of White Stork, Glossy Ibis (the specie has breed here in 2013), Cattle and white Egrett, 5 Grey Heron, 5 Black Stork, 8 Marsh and 8 Montagus Harrier. Within the waders, 80 Black-winged Stilt, 5 Lapwing, 2 Ruff, 10 Common Snipe, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Spotted Redshank, 1 Greenshank, 10 Green Sandpiper and 3 Whiskered Tern.

Glossy Ibis and Cattle Egret in Laguna de la Janda Photo: W. GSCHWANDTNER

We have also a very good sighting of one Blak-winged Kite and unfortunatelly we found another one dead by collision with a power line. After the rice crops we enter an area with alfalfa crops and ploughs where we find a group of 6 Little Bustard (2 males) and a flock of Red-legged partridge. 7th September: before leaving Tarifa area, we go for a short and nice walk around Huerta Grande Visitor Centre where we see and hear many small passerines. Near the coffee shop we have a great view of an Iberian Chiffchaff, first heard and finally seen. From Tarifa we have a long trip to Andujar of more than 4 hours. We drive along the coast direcction Malaga and then heading North. On the way, we cross the town of Antequera and we decide to have lunch in Parque atural the Antequera. This is 40 minutes from the town but its wonderful landscapes worth to be seen. Up there we have a dense fog and unusual low temperatures for begining September. In spite of the fog, we see a couple of Blue Rock Thrush and three Spanish Ibex. After this quick stop, we continue to Andujar for two and a half hours more. Once in Andujar we stop quickly in our accommodation Hostal Los Pinos and we go to La Jndula to try the Iberian Lynx, the most endangered cat on Earth. On the way, we see very close from the car three Imperial Spanish Eagle. Griffon Vulture is very common everywhere. Once in La Jndula we were waiting there till dusk in one of the best places

where the Lynx can be seen. No luck with this but we enjoy a couple of Black Vulture that cross the sky above us, a couple of Spanish Imperial Eagle sitting on a tree plus many Iberian Magpie and Red-legged Partridge. We finish our day with a goodby dinner in a tipical spanish tapas restaurant near our accommodation. 8th September Before leaving Andujar and lead to Sevilla Airport, of course that we have to try the lynx early in the morning. We went to another famouse place where the lynk is seen very often at the Guadalquivir River. No luck again but we have some other nice birds as the Iberian Green Woodpecker (only heard). Without time for more birding we go to Sevilla Airport.
