Building on the technology and expertise Komatsu has accumulated since its establishment in 1921, GALEO presents customers worldwide with a strong, distinctive image of technological innovation and exceptional value. The GALEO brand will be employed for Komatsu's full lineup of advanced construction and mining equipment. Designed with high productivity, safety and environmental considerations in mind, the machines in this line reflect Komatsu's commitment to contributing to the creation of a better world. Genuine Answers for Land & Environment Optimization
Komatsu has been developing and manufacturing in house both the construction vehicles and engines: equipment since 1931 and diesel engines since 1935. Supported by such experience, the ecot3 technology was developed aiming for preservation of the Earth's environment (Ecology) and the customer's productivity (Economy). What makes us successful is our strong technological capabilities and power that integrates them into efficient machinery.

"ecot3" [pronunciation: ekt thr:] is Komatsu's comprehensive technology for ecology & economy of construction equipment. This ecology & economy technology is to be applied to Komatsu's Tier 3 models to meet EPA Tier 3, EU Stage3A and Japan's off-highway special automobile clean air act emissions requirements, which all require a substantial reduction in not only nitrogen oxide (NOX) but also particulate matter (PM) and hydrocarbon (HC). Japan's off-highway special automobile clean air act in particular requires exhaust gases to be measured as being emitted from the operation of engine driven equipment. Thus, the efficient interaction between the engine and the equipment that performs various tasks is of most importance. Unlike on-highway automobiles, construction equipment often has to do heavy duty jobs such as digging hard soil, rip heavy rocks and lift weighty materials and to do so its engine needs to be able to deliver high performance at all times. This is a peculiar challenge that is added to the development of engines for construction equipment. The ecot3 technology is made of a number of state of the art technologies in the fields of engine, hydraulics and electronics combined in a creative manner. This comprehensive technology enables construction machinery to meet the said emission requirements without compromising fuel efficiency, productivity, or durability.

The HPCR (High Pressure Common Rail) fuel injection system pressure-feeds fuel with a high-pressure pump to store it in a pressure vessel called the "Common Rail" and then inject the pressurized fuel into individual cylinder from the vessel under the control of the computer (controller). With conventionally used mechanical injection pumps, because injection pressure is low, it is difficult to meet both requirements of reducing NOX emission and improving performance. Because the HPCR fuel injection system is capable of not only high-pressure injection but also the injection of optimum quantity and multi-stage injection, almost complete combustion takes place to reduce PM. Fuel consumption is reduced. Output performance is improved and noise is reduced by high-pressure fuel injection.

PC200-8 For engine control, fuel injection can be controlled by engine controller (electronic control). Two engine curves are used to allow different matching points depending on control lever operation pattern. Even when the work performed is the same, consumed horsepower is lower and fuel consumption is better due to the improvement of hydraulic pressure loss.

For example, supposing the engine horsepower is 100, the pump can actually deliver only 70, and the remaining 30 is consumed by leakage. It is important to minimize the leakage. By various improvements, including the clearance of pump internal parts, we succeeded in minimizing the leakage and reducing the loss.
19
FUEL ECONOMY
Arm quick return circuit
When arm circuit return flow increases as arm is extended, the oil directly returns to the tank through the arm quick return valve, contributing to reduction of hydraulic loss. This leads to faster dumping speeds and reduction of fuel consumption.

In combined operation, because the pump flow rate at the merging is determined by pressure on the heavy load circuit, pressure loss occurs on the light load side. By separating and individually controlling the two pumps, the pressure loss on the light load circuit can be reduced.
