Design a Modern Assessment Content Standard: Locate a core curriculum standard that you would like to focus on and

write it in here. (Underline the nouns / circle the verbs) CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.11-12.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze how an author uses and refines the meaning of a key term or terms over the course of a text (e.g., how Madison defines faction in Federalist No. 10).

Write a Student Learning Objective (in student friendly language) that is Aligned to Your Standard

By the end of todays class, you should be able to pick out key terms within the work and define them based on their context.

Traditional Assessment - Evidence of Student Mastery In a low tech more traditional setting, how would you know if your students met the objectives you set? I would have them circle key terms that they come across throughout the reading. Afterwards I would have them write what they think the definition is based on context clues, then list the words in the context that helped them define the term. Afterwards, I would have them identify the term in the back of the book or a dictionary and compare their definitions to see how well they were able to analyze and define that particular key term.

Describe the Technological Tool You Will be Using as Part of this Assessment (http://abletech.wikispaces.com/)

Which of our essential skills will you expect your students to exhibit in this assessment? (Minimum of 3)

Leadership x Practical Life Skills I will be using Diigo which allows students to mark, highlight, sticky-note, and define terms much like students are used to doing with their Kindles. I will also be using Popplet which allowed students to organize ideas in webs/maps, while encouraging the inclusion of pictures and collaboration. x Adaptability x Interpersonal/Collaboration Global Brokerage x Well Roundedness x Communication x Critical Thinking

Describe Your Vision for your Revamped Assessment - Evidence of Student Mastery In a modern setting, how would you know if your students met the objectives you set? Which technology tool will you use? How will you incorporate the technology? How/where will you weave the important 21st century skills that we identified (leadership, practical life skills, adaptability, interpersonal, global brokerage, well roundedness, communication, critical thinking)?

I will be using Popplet and Diigo as the main tools for my common core standard and objective. First, using Diigo, students will have the ability to mark, highlight, sticky-note, and look up terms as they go much like they can on the Kindles with which they are familiar. From there, the students will be asked to create a visually friendly word web on Popplet for the key terms they highlighted and defined. They will put the term in the middle, a picture that helps remind them what the term means in one box, an example (other than the one they saw in their text) of the term being used in another box, the actual definitions for the term listed in the back of the book or the dictionary in another box with the most relevant definition highlighted, and finally the context clues that helped them define the word/ choose the best possible definition in another box. Other students within their group will then add to the word web by adding missing context clues, and other related images or examples that they find relevant. This will help students learn multiple terms in depth, while only having to personally design and concentrate on a few of their own by contributing to other students webs.

What Do You See as the Benefits and Possible Pitfalls of Your New Modern Assessment? Benefits: Possible Pitfalls:

Allows for visual stimulation and a more easily accessible project that students can collaborate on while encouraging the kind of reading they are likely doing at home

- Students may become more distracted with the design and mapping tools and focus less on the material they are putting in it.
