Three athletes from Indian Brook First Nation, N.S. took home three of the top ve awards at the Nova Scotia Aboriginal Sport Awards Banquet Nov. 30 in Dartmouth, N.S. ! Lacrosse player Bryson Knockwood, hockey player Kreshia Robinson-Paul and Ashley Julian were all honoured for their dedication and hard work in their chosen sport."! Bryson Knockwood: 2013 Male Athlete of the Year.! Kreshia Robinson-Paul: 2013 Female Athlete of the Year.! Ashley Julian: 2013 Female Coach of the Year.! Ten athletes from Indian Brook First Nation were also presented with certicates and role model posters for representing the community at the provincial level in their chosen sports. They included:! As outlined in our audit and various community meetings, our band is an estimated" $10-million in debt." Our Chief and Council have been adopting policies and setting procedures surrounding band programming." These policies are in place to ensure that all band members are treated equal when it comes to band programs and services, while setting a process in place where the band can properly track its spending." ! Christmas Holidays! !

It has been a very busy fall/winter season for our band." As we move into the holiday season I am pleased to report that our Wallace Hills Entertainment Centre is scheduled for a soft opening in December." As of today, we are waiting for the building to be hooked up to its main power source, waiting for the communications to be installed, and waiting for the Video Lottery Terminals to be installed." Our Wallace Hills Entertainment Centre will house up to 45 Video Lottery Terminal machines." We expect to have a grand opening celebration for our new entertainment facility sometime in the new calendar year." With that, please be advised that we are looking for employees to serve as gaming clerks in this new facility." We would prefer that applicants are bondable.!

The Band will close for the Christmas holidays starting December 20, 2013 at noon and will re-open January 6, 2014." Christmas bonus payments will be available until after the new year, but please keep in mind that our band will not be distributing payments during the Christmas closure." The social payment regularly scheduled for December 25, 2013 will be released on December 19, 2013.!

Remembrance Day in Indian Brook

Under cold, grey skies, more than 70 community members gathered on the front lawn at the Indian Brook Health Centre Nov. 11 to unveil a cenotaph to honour veterans from Indian Brook First Nation, N.S."! The cenotaph contains the names of more than 120 Mikmaw veterans with the Shubenacadie Band who served with the Canadian or American military. The Health Centre raised the money to pay for the cenotaph which was placed adjacent to the community cemetery."! Its all about closure. Its about our veterans mental health and well-being, Mental Wellness Coordinator Tina Sack-Nevin said following the ceremony. We really felt (they) should be recognized in this sense, she said.! The cenotaph unveiling also marked the rst time a Remembrance Day ceremony was held in Indian Brook First Nation.! Sack-Nevin said the Health Centre staff have received positive feedback from veterans for the cenotaph.! Overwhelmed with joy, happiness, love. Everything you can think of. They have closure now, she said.! At the end of the day, they can say that they are recognized not only in the country of Canada but "in their own community and thats what its all about."! Community members marched from St. Catherines Parish, where a mass was held to mark Remembrance Day, to the Indian Brook Health Centre.!

We are so grateful for the people who sacriced their lives so this can be a day of peace, Mikmaw veteran Alan Knockwood, said during the ceremony.! Shonna Gloade read the poem, In Flanders" Field, during the ceremony. Knockwood also read a poem called Smaknis which was written by the late Will Basque of Eskasoni, N.S."! Ryan Hamilton, who served with the U.S. Marines Corps in Iraq, read the names of all of the Shubenacadie Band members, living and deceased, who served in the military.! Eastern Eagle Drummers opened and closed the Remembrance Day ceremony with their songs to honour the veterans.! A community meal was held at the Indian Brook Multipurpose Centre following the ceremony.!

Former chief passes away

The Shubenacadie Band Chief and Council is mourning the passing of former Chief Reginald Maloney on December 3, 2013 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre.!

Reg was my family, my friend and my mentor, Shubenacadie Band Chief Rufus Copage said on Wednesday. I wouldnt be where I am today if it wasnt for his advice and guidance.!

"Chief Reg will always be remembered as a warrior chief."!

Reg was a great leader for our First Nation. He will be dearly missed, Chief Copage added."! Councillor Alex McDonald remembers Maloney as a leader who always stood on the front lines in Mikmaw peoples ght to have our Aboriginal and Treaty Rights upheld in the courts.!

Reg was not just my friend and fellow councillor. He was my family, Councillor Thomas Maloney said. I learned a lot about leadership and how to better serve my community through him, he added.! I offer my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Tanya, and his family, Councillor Maloney said.!

Reginald Maloney served on the Shubenacadie band council either as a chief or councillor for nearly 30 years between the years 1966 to 2012. He served as chief consecutively from 1990-2004.!

Im proud to announce that I have been selected to be a part of the Chef de Mission Staff for Team Nova Scotia at the North America Indigenous Games (NAIG) July 20-27, 2014 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Further information will be announced in the near future.! Kickboxing Fitness classes has been extended to Thursday December 19, 2013, beginning every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6 - 7 p.m. at the Indian Brook Multipurpose Centre.! Holiday recreation schedule is as follow:! Sunday Dec 15th Ball Hockey: 8 - 10 p.m.! Tuesday Dec 17th Basketball: 8 - 10 p.m.! Thursday Dec 19th Volleyball: 8 - 10 p.m.! With the holidays approaching quickly, the Community and Youth Recreation department has been exceptionally busy fullling the demands of our mandate and community members "request for well being, recreation and tness programming. We provide these by establishing new partnerships with municipalities, agencies, as well as working with our own internal partnerships with departments.! In conjunction with our Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies, our department and Efciency Nova Scotia have yet again partnered to provide the opportunity to exchange two sets of old traditional holiday lights for a set of more efcient LED holiday lights. Last year was the second successful year for the LED light exchanges in Indian Brook and we hope to make this year even better." In an effort to do just that, we hope to gauge the interest for this year's LED Light Exchange which is set for Saturday Dec 14, 2013 at 6 - 7 p.m. at the Saint Catherines Church basement.!

First Nations Snowboard Team (FNST), Ski Wentworth and the Community and Youth Recreation department have collaborated to implement a snowboard coaching and training program for ve (5) Indian Brook youth between the ages of 15 to 25 year olds. This training program will equip the individual participants with the skills, knowledge and experience to pursue careers as snow board coaches. Participants in the program will be given the option to remain in the FNST program moving forward and will serve as mentors to the next group of individuals who take part in the program.!

Security Department Report

The band requests that if anyone has information relating to this incident, please contact the Indian Brook Detachment of the RCMP or Chief Rufus Copage.! The Security Manager attended the Atlantic First Nations Emergency Management Preparedness Gathering in Membertou, N.S. during the week of

November 25-29, 2013. The gathering was a good opportunity to meet and learn from other emergency managers in the Atlantic First Nation communities. The information received will go a long way towards making our emergency management team more effective in the event of a community emergency.!

Entrepreneur Prole: John Boy Brooks!

Q: How you get into in to making Leather belts?! A: I had joined the Canadian Armed Forces. It came with the trade. I was a Bosin (which is) basically a seamstress. We had made leather holsters, knife cases and belts. We made belts for different purposes - belts that could be used in the eld as well as utility belts for the trades people in the military.!

A: The biggest inuence was my great grandmother on my fathers side, Christine Brooks. I can remember as a small boy watching her make things with her hands. I was particularly amazed at what she could make out of leather. Even today, I would nd it hard to try and reproduce what she made out of leather.!

On my mother`s side of the family, my grandmother made quilts and (had) sewn outts amongst other things. I think I come by it pretty honest.! As Bosin, I would have to sew curtains for all the people aboard the ship. They would require different curtains for different situations. Dark curtain for when the ship lights were to be blacked out and light curtains to let in the sunlight. We even sewed ags (manufactured) for different ships with the exception of the Canadian Flag.!

Q: Why did you join the Armed Forces?! A:I had looked for work and it was hard to come by. I felt I needed a trade and the long term benets and a good retirement package was a good enough lure for me. Unfortunately I had to leave early because of medical reasons.! Q: How far did you go in school?! A: I graduated from Hants East Rural High in 1994-95. I attended the University of New Brunswick for one year, then decided to join the Canadian Armed Forces.! Q: Where there any other inuences that made you get into leather work?!

Q: What does the future hold for you in this craft?! A: I would like to eventually expand my business into creating and repairing leather goods. I want to even repair and sharpen skates but my ultimate goal is get in to making jackets, vest, saddle bags and chaps for motorcyclist .!

Kwe! With a fresh dusting of snow on the ground and colourful lights brightening our evenings, it reminds us all that the Christmas season is upon us. December is always a busy but exciting time at LSK school as classes are preparing for the Christmas Concert and wrapping up their lessons for the holiday break.! The LSK school will hold its annual Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 6 p.m. Our students work very hard to prepare a special performance or two for this entertaining evening so we encourage everyone to come out and show their support.! I want to offer a big thank you to everyone who organized and participated in our annual Remembrance Day ceremony on November 7, 2013. Special thanks to Leeanne Maloney for her role in coordinating the organization effort. This event is always a highlight and this years ceremony was particularly special as it included for the rst time the Veterans Memorial at the Health Centre. Once again, our students took full opportunity to display their artistic skills through their entries into the Royal Canadian

We also our rst Parent-Teacher/Report Card Day meetings for this year in November. The sessions held on November 21"were well attended and provided a valuable opportunity for parents/ guardians to receive a detailed progress update regarding their students achievement for the rst term of the school year.! Please note that Report Card Day/Parent-Teacher meetings for the end of Semester One for grades 9-12 are scheduled for February 6, 2014 and will be by appointment. Second term Report Cards/ Parent-Teacher meetings for grades Primary-Six will take place March 6, 2014. However, if parents/guardians at any time have any questions or concerns regarding their childs achievement and progress, please do not hesitate to contact the school or stop by to discuss the situation.!

Health Centre Report

The Health Centre staff has been very busy in all areas during the month of November. We continue to provide services and promote our programs for the benet of all of our clients.! The Home and Community Care Program: Manager: Terry Knockwood, Heather Nickerson R.N. and Kathleen Wells LPN have continued to see clients on a regular basis i.e. Visiting Elders program, weekly visits, dressing changes, assessments, case management and their Home and Community Care (HCC) reports.! Home and Community Care staff also see clients when in hospital for visitation, calls with family and hospital staff for discharge planning, faxing information to appropriate agencies and other paperwork needed to give each client the best care.! First Nations Non-Insured Health Benets (FNIHB) requires monthly statistical reports for HCC. The data must be added up, entered into the computer and then uploaded to headquarters for Health Canada in Ottawa.!

The Mental Wellness program: Manager Tina Sack-Nevin, Mental Health Counsellor Jacklyn Paul are continuing to focus on referrals for adult Mental Health counselling, children and youth. They continue to receive training on prevention and promotion of wellness for the community of Shubenacadie Band. There are new programs for the upcoming year in the Wellness Department. These will be available in January of 2014.!

The Community Health Nurse: Peggy ORiley R.N. has continued to provide the program baby and me which is open to community moms and dads every Monday from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. This program enhances family communication and participation.! Daily lifestyles clinic happens every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for any community member who wishes to get their blood pressure taken and or sugar testing by the Community Health Nurse. Jodi Maloney can also assist in this area.! Maternal Child Health Home Visitor program: Catherine Knockwood is available to do some home visiting during the daytime from Monday to Friday. She continues to promote Healthy Living among community members.!

Mental Wellness Program Report

The Mental Wellness programs youth groups are currently underway after a late start. The youth programs take place at the Indian Brook Multipurpose Centre Mondays and Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. The targeted age groups include children aged 5-9-year-olds and 10-13-year-olds.! Our program also organized a successful Remembrance Day ceremony to honour our veterans, unveil our monument and host a community feast. The feast consisted of Moose meat that was harvested from our youth moose hunt in October 2013. Our youth also set up a day to distribute meat from their hunt to their families and community members.!

Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselling Association (N.A.D.A.C.A.). The conferences theme topic was prescription drug abuse and misuse in First Nation communities.!

Our department will run a babysitting course for our community youth in January 2014. This training will have an additional benet for our other community programs because this will allow families to make childcare arrangements with a trained babysitter so they can attend programs offered at the health centre."!

Mental Wellness staff attended a certied training program in Montreal, Que. aimed at addressing communities and families with suicide intervention and how to help before and after suicide attempts. This program was geared towards healing and moving forward, giving caretakers tools to help them in their everyday work.!

Our Mental Health and Wellness staff attended a two day Drug Utilization Prevention and Promotion (D.U.P.P.) Addictions Conference organized by the

During Addictions Awareness week this year, the Mental Wellness program worked with N.A.D.A.C.A. to organize a community dance for all ages at the Indian Brook Multipurpose Centre. A workshop on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder was held by N.A.D.A.C.A. at the Indian Brook Health Centre.!

The Mental Wellness program worked with both the bands Sports and Recreation Department and Lnu Sipuk KinaMuokuom (LSK School) to honour ten students for their achievements in sports and recreation. A sports summit was held at the Ramada Hotel in Dartmouth, N.S. November 29-30, 2013 to recognize these achievers.!

Employment and Training Report

Academic Career Connections Phase One Preparatory program has started in Indian Brook First Nation as of October 15, 2013. The program has 18 participants. Phase One will be complete as of December 13, 2013. The Phase Two portion of the program will start in January 2014. We would like to thank our Native Employment Ofcer (NEO), the Housing Department, Nova Scotia Aboriginal Employment Partnership (NSAEP), Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and all of our students for all of their hard work and patience.!

Our NEO has been actively engaging with industry partners and training institutions across the province to link more clients to training to employment opportunities.! CMTC Trades College Carpentry Apprentice Program is set to start in January. Active recruitment for this.! Clothing Bank is open and accepting donations.! The four-week Oil and Gas Skilled Labourer Program has started with the Native Council of Nova Scotia.! Participants from Indian Brook First Nation were granted entry into another Customized Welding Program which started October 21, 2013 at the Akerley Campus of the NSCC. The program was funded by the Native Council of Nova Scotia which was modelled after our last Welding Program we developed with NSCC and they are doing great.! Creating a skilled workers database for employers and funding agencies to link them together with employees.! Skills Link Program for Youth: ve weeks of classroom theory and 20 weeks work experience program, active recruitment.! Pre-Employment Program facilitated by NSCC started October 15, 2013 and will run to January 31, 2014.! Recruiting for a customized Oil Burner Technician Training Program with NSCC for Fall 2014. Youth Stay in School Initiative (Mentorship Program): We will be working within the community to provide employment for the youth ages 15-21 who are in high school and wish to engage in part-time employment through-out the school year. They will be responsible for delivering various programming to kids ages 4-14 in the community of Indian Brook First Nation."! The Post-Secondary Director job posting has closed and interviews are now in the process of being set up.!

Truck Driving Internship Program :Seven (7) internship spots available, guaranteed employment. Clients must have criminal background check, valid passport and subject to random drug-testing. Operations and Maintenance Report

The water consumption levels have slightly increased to an average of 541.79"litres per person per day during the past month.! The department has had several instances of attempted break-ins at the water treatment plant and wastewater treatment plant. I have requested increased security patrols of both sites due to the several attempts. However, a break-in and theft did occur at the wastewater treatment plant sometime between November 11 at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. on November 12. The RCMP were called immediately and a report of was led. Ofce computers, a computer monitor and bolt cutters were stolen."!

I am pleased to report that department staff received another Certicate of Recognition from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) and the Circuit Rider Program at the yearly Community-based Water Monitoring and Water Operator Training at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). This award recognized our departments"outstanding team work compared to the other water and wastewater departments in Atlantic Canada. This is the second year in a row our department has been recognized.!

The break-in and theft did not compromise the communitys water and wastewater systems but the department has lost its electronic data. As a result of the incident, cameras have been installed and there has not been any further break-in attempts to date. The theft has cost the department"approximately $4,000 in extra costs to the budget for"replacing the stolen items, replacing damaged windows and installing cameras and locks. A $500 reward is being offered for

Construction on the new well, water line and water treatment plant upgrades continues. The work is expected to be completed by the end of January 2014. Staff have been working closely with AANDC and CBCL to ensure this projected is completed within the timeframe and ensuring that monthly reporting is complete.! I have received several complaints from residents that recyclables are not being picked up. I have explained that with the lay-off of the garbage staff, we dont have the ability to perform daily pickups. I will meet with our garbage vendor next week to raise the situation with them.!

Due to the renovations in the Seniors Room at the Multipurpose Centre, the Aboriginal Head Start and "Tiny Tots Playgroup was delayed in opening.! While waiting for our classroom to open, our staff had an opportunity to take a few training programs:! High Five to promote Principles of Healthy Child Development.! All about the Early Childhood Education Rating Scales (ECER-R).!

We are pleased to announce that the Aboriginal Head Start Program and Tiny Tots Playgroup is now open for public. Aboriginal Head Start child must be three years of age on or before December 31, 2013. Tiny Tots can be 0-2 years of age.! The Aboriginal Head Start Program has six components:!

Education! Parent and Family Involvement"! Health Promotion! Culture and Language! Social Services"! Nutrition!

Classes for the Aboriginal Head Start are Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tiny Tots Playgroup are Mondays and Wednesdays in the morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In January 2014, Monday classes will resume as scheduled and Wednesday classes will be moved to the afternoon from 1-3 p.m.!

Childrens Oral Health Initiative (COHI)!

The Childrens oral health initiative (COHI) is a service provided to children ages 0-7 years. COHI is designed to prevent and control tooth decay. It is a simple, quick, and painless technique of applying uoride varnish onto the teeth, there is no cost for the COHI.! A permission form is required if you are interested in having your child enrolled in the COHI program. Furnace Fuel Notice for Social Clients!

Please note that furnace fuel requests for social clients must be paid prior to delivery. Check your oil tank gauge on a regular basis from Monday to Thursday to ensure you do not run out of oil during this time of year, especially during the weekend. There is an additional cost of $55.00 for an emergency delivery.!

Please make sure your furnace oil gauge is working properly. If you have any concerns with this, please contact the Housing Department at 758-2049 ext. 239.! On a similar matter, the oil company we use for deliveries has informed us about its concerns regarding loose dogs in peoples yards. The company has informed us the truck operator will not deliver fuel if the household owners dog is loose or tied too close to the oil tank. Please secure your dog away from your oil tank while an oil delivery is being made at your home."!

Flooring Installation Program!
