and Left intellectuals, who over the past half century have all but destroyed post-independence Indias education system, are unlikely to agree, the countrys estimated 82,000 private (aided and unaided) primary and secondary schools and a sprinkling of army, air force and Central government (Kendriya Vidyalaya and Jawahar Navodaya) K-12 schools are the backbone of the nations primarysecondary education system. The overwhelming majority of Indias business, professional, legal and bureaucratic, if not political, leaders who for all their faults and wrong-turns have ensured the unexpected survival of independent India as a functional democracy, owe their vital foundational education to private schools, beleaguered islands of excellence within Indias moribund education system crippled by the excesses of Left-inspired licencepermit-quota raj. Therefore to encourage growth, development and striving for excellence in critically important K-12 education, since 2007, EducationWorld (estb.1999) has been publishing annual league tables of the countrys most respected day, boarding and international schools in the public interest. The EW league tables rate and rank 250 of the countrys most well-known schools (short-listed by EducationWorld ) across 12 parameters of excellence viz, academic reputation, co-curricular and sports

education, competence of faculty, individual attention to students, value for money, institutional leadership/ management, parental involvement, infrastructure provision, quality of alumni, institutional integrity and admissions transparency. Selected day, boarding and international schools across the country were rated and ranked on each of these parameters and awarded scores out of a maximum 100 (except for the critical parameter of competence of faculty

which is given a weightage of 200) by a carefully chosen mix of 2,066 parents, principals, educationists, and teachers countrywide, representing informed opinion, with fees-paying parents constituting over 60 percent of the respondent samples. Again this year, a carefully constituted SEC (socio-economic category) A sample respondents (median income Rs.30,000 per month) mix comprising graduates and postgraduates was polled by the Delhi-based market research and opinion polls agency C fore

(Centre for forecasting and research), which specialises in appraisal of educational institutions at the national level. C fore has been rating and ranking professional education institutions, including B-schools for the past decade for corporates and publications including Hindustan Times , Times of India , Mint and Outlook . To mine data for the EW-C fore Survey of Schools 2009 league tables, the agencys field researchers fanned out across 15 cities countrywide including the four metros (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata), almost-metro cities (Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bhopal and Jamshedpur) and in education hubs with high concentrations of schools (Darjeeling, Dehradun) to conduct perceptual surveys relating to the 250 selected schools. Every respondent was asked to evaluate schools in his/her own region north, south, east, west on the assumption that they would be more knowledgeable about proximate education institutions, on a ten-point scale across the same 12 parameters as last year. The points awarded under 11 parameters were multiplied by ten and the critical teacher quality/ faculty competence by 20 and totaled up to award an aggregate score out of a maximum possible 1,300, to each institution. Schools unknown to less than 20 respondents in each zone have been excluded from the league tables, says Premchand Palety, promoterdirector of C fore, admitting the possibility that rankable schools which maintain below-the-radar media and social profiles could well not figure in the league tables. Ram School, Delhi; Doon School, Dehradun; and Woodstock, Mussoorie have maintained their ranking at the top of the league tables. However down the ladder, this years tables exhibit a dramatic churn, indicating that institutional managements are raising their profiles and/or that the parent and educators communities are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about quality issues in primary and secondary education. Moreover, with growing dissatisfaction with Indian educations traditional memory-based rote learning systems, schools with intensive focus on academics and board examination results seem to have fallen out of favour. Quite obviously respondents who constituted the sample survey have become aware that theres more to education than academic excellence. In this year s league tables, the rankings of academics-focused schools with reputations for board exam results and little else, have fallen sharply. For instance, South Point School, Kolkata, and Patha Bhavan, Kolkata, which were highly ranked in previous surveys, have been pushed down the league tables in the 2009 survey. This is because they have done little to change the popular perception that they are primarily academics oriented. Such institutions should not only reinvent themselves, but also communicate their changing profiles to their stakeholders. Young parents are increasingly opting for schools such as Shri Ram, Delhi and Step by Step, Noida which give individual attention to children and facilitate their overall personality development, says Palety, an alumnus of the Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and Fore School of Management, Delhi who has over 15 years experience of market research and promoted C fore in the year 2000. In the following pages of this detailed annual cover feature, we present comprehensively researched national, regional and parametral perceptual ratings and rankings of Indias most admired schools in 2009. Moreover this year we present an additional Facts Sheet of schools which responded to our appeal for hard, factual data. Read together, they provide parents, teachers, principals and educationists a wealth of information about future trends in primary-secondary education.

OR THE PURPOSES OF THIS SURVEY , day schools were defined as K12 institutions in which a majority of students are day scholars. Therefore primary-secondaries such as Bishop Cotton Boys and Girls, Bangalore, DPS (R.K.Puram), Delhi and Loreto Convent, Darjeeling which also host a small minority of boarders, are classified as day schools. Moreover its pertinent to bear in mind that day schools tend to have parochial, rather than national reputations. Therefore the regional/ zonal rankings of day schools are arguably of greater import than their positions on the national league table. Perhaps the only constant in this year s day schools league tables compared to last years is that The Shri Ram School (TSRS), Delhi has retained its premier position as Indias topranked day school in the all-India and north zone rankings, with an aggregate ratings score of 1,072 out of a maximum of 1,300, topping on the critical parameters of faculty competence, individual attention to students and parental involvement. But thats about the only constant from last years ranking. Down the ladder theres been a major churn, with Mumbais prestigious (estb.1860) Cathedral & John Connon ranked seventh all-India and second in the western region last year, having moved up five places to be ranked second allIndia and No. 1 in the west.

I am delighted, pleased and somewhat overwhelmed to learn that TSRS has maintained its ranking as Indias most respected school in the 2009 survey. We were all very nervous about whether we would retain our top rank this year, because maintaining the position is in some ways more difficult than attaining it, said Komal Sood principal of the TSRS senior school (classes VI-XII) when your correspondent rang her with the news. I believe the credit for this achievement should in large measure be given to our major stakeholders teachers and parents. Therefore it gives me special pleasure to learn that on the parameters of faculty competence and parental involvement, TSRS has been ranked first among day schools countrywide, she added. Quite obviously the managements of these institutions have favourably impacted the respondents in the relatively highly industrialised Western Region, pushing a large number of schools, of which not even 20 of the 437 respondents in the region had sufficient awareness, off the table. S OUTHERN REGION . The most notable feature of the southern day schools league table is the rise of DAV Boys Senior ranked fourth last year, to the very top with the regions best scores under the parameters of academic reputation, faculty competence and value for money. This apart, the other top five positions are retained by Bishop Cotton Boys, Bangalore (2); Gitanjali School, Hyderabad (3) ranked high under the parameter of individual attention to students; St. Josephs Boys High, Bangalore (4) and Bishop Cotton Girls, Bangalore (5). Among the major rank gainers in 2009 are SBOA (State Bank Officers Association) School, Chennai (from 15 to 7); and the KFI (Krishnamurti Foundation India) School, Chennai (24 to 9); Inventure Academy, Bangalore (23 to 16); Oasis International (26 to 17); Jubilee Hills Public, Hyderabad (33 to 20); CHIREC Public, Hyderabad (36 to 22); The Ashram, Chennai (38 to 26), and The Valley School, Bangalore (40 to 28). The students and staff of the school are very excited that DAV Senior Secondary has dramatically improved its all-India ranking and especially about our being ranked the most respected day school in South India in

the latest EW survey of schools. I attribute this achievement and particularly our being ranked second all-India on the parameter of academic reputation to four factors a dynamic management team; excellent teamwork within our teachers community, hardworking students and cooperative parents. Moreover, the 2009 Eastern Region table is notable for several hitherto unranked schools entering the Top 20. Among them: Loreto, Shillong (7); St. Pauls, Agartala (8); Kolkata International, Kolkata (11); Don Bosco (Bandel), Kolkata (15); Assembly of God Church School, Kolkata (18), and Auxilium Convent (Bandel), Kolkata (20). Other schools unranked last year which have secured good ratings in the 2009 Eastern Region day school league tables are DPS Newtown, Kolkata (21); St. Michael, Patna (22 which ipso facto makes it Bihars top-ranked day school) and Welland Goldsmith, Kolkata (23). Another conspicuous feature of this

year s Eastern Region day schools league table is the sharp slide in the ranking of several schools highly regarded for their academic focus. Among them: St. James (5 to 13); South Point (7 to 14); Ashok Hall Girls Higher (10 to 20) and Calcutta Girls (13 to 24) all in Kolkata. This phenomenon supports the analysis of Premchand Palety, chief executive of the Delhi-based market research firm C fore which conducted this (and last years) survey, that the SECA parents community if not other less secure parents groups and contemporary educators, are becoming increasingly aware that childrens education experience should go beyond academic focus and examination outcomes.
