Careers: three interviews

BY LINDA MACRIDGE

A. VET I suppose it was my love for animals that made me decide on this job, says Dr John Gordon. The necessary qualifications include a university degree, but if you dont love animals you cant really do it. The salary is not as high as many people believe and very often I have to visit farms away from the village I work in. Sometimes there are risks. I remember once when a pet snake attacked me! However, nothing compares to helping an animal. B. POLICE DETECTIVE Although to most of us this job sounds exciting, police detective Chris Collins believes that there isnt so much glamour. Working long hours and getting a low salary are not what most young people dream of. People often believe we are very famous. The truth is that the newspapers rarely write anything about us. Our job doesnt always have successes. You need to be a strong person to survive the pressure and you should have a good memory and a clear mind. However, when you solve a mystery, you feel excited. C. ARCHITECT Its a difficult time for architects. You can be unemployed for a long time after your university studies, but if youre lucky at the interview and youre talented, you can become very successful and earn a lot of money. Although computers make the job much easier, you have to come up with original ideas, says Tim Burton. In which paragraph does it say that ... 1 ___ the job offers a high salary? 2 ___ computers are helpful? PAGE 18

Is there intelligence anywhere else?

Many believe that we are the only intelligent creatures in the galaxy. But is this so? While huge cities, original inventions and a comfortable lifestyle are all signs of intelligence, some people argue that the destruction of our environment is a sign of stupidity. However, everybody agrees that no other creature on the planet has achieved so many things. On the other hand, the Earth is only one of countless planets in space. Some scientists believe that life may have existed on Mars, so why not elsewhere? Although it may be difficult for us to imagine alien creatures, it doesnt mean they are not real! It may be too early to say, but it would be fascinating to know that there are creatures out there who can think.

Dear Diary, Ive just celebrated my 70th birthday and I cant believe it. It feels like it was only yesterday when I first set off on my incredible journey. My dream was to discover new, exotic places. I remember I used to spend hours at home examining maps and I was so happy when the ship left the port. Only a few weeks later I was shipwrecked on a desert island. I taught myself how to build a shelter and pick fresh fruit. Once, when I was walking up a hill, I stood on a huge snake. It looked hungry, but I managed to escape. I couldnt believe my luck. I remember when I was saved, people thought Id made up the whole story! Ive had many adventures in my life. Ive travelled all over the world. continuous. Find them and correct them. was shining The sun shone when we decided to visit the small island in the middle of the lake. We got onto the boat and arrived after half an hour. We had a good time - Tom and I swam and Rebecca sunbathed - when lightning suddenly lit up the sky. After a few seconds it rained so heavily that we couldnt see the other side of the lake. There was no place to go, so we decided to build a shelter. We still collected tree branches to build it when the rain stopped. We went home very wet and very tired. Circle the correct answer.
