German III
Introduction
Reading has been defined as decoding graphic material to the phonemic patterns of spoken language which we have already mastered when reading is begun. To put it another way, reading consists of coming back to speech through the graphic symbols. In short, meanings reside in the sounds of the spoken language. Speaking a language is the necessary first step to acquiring the ability to read a language with meaning. The reading lessons in German III are designed to familiarize you with material (signs, words, phrases) you are likely to see and hear in a Germanspeaking country. Included is a section on the pronunciation of German names, as well as sections with some typical expressions and proverbs. The reading materials for German III are all recorded at the end of the program. You can do these readings as it is most convenient for you. They can be done along with the units (roughly at a one to two ratio) or done entirely after completing the full 30 units. Instructions on how to proceed with the readings are contained in the audio portion of the course.
