Warm up for winter
Our preview of high school
winter sports. PAGE 14
MIKE MONOSTRA/The Sun
Eight-year-old Arianna Javid wanted to do a donation drive last year after first moving to Moorestown. Unfortunately, the timing did-
nt line up with the move being so recent. However, Arianna didnt give up on her goal. For her birthday party on Dec. 15, she asked all
of her friends to bring presents. Not for her, but to instead donate to the toy drive at South Valley Elementary School. Ariannas
dream was for every kid to get one present during the holiday season, and she felt this was the best way to make this happen. When
her mother, Melissa, asked her daughter why she wanted to do this, she explained that her baby brother, who was born just after the
Javids move to Moorestown, was the best gift she could receive. The gifts Arianna donated were put into the toy drive bin at South
Valley. The Urban Challenge Club at Moorestown High School coordinated the toy drive. All of the donations went to underprivileged
children at Ana Sample House and New Visions Homeless Day Center in Camden.

Council
passes
rec center
ordinance
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
At least for the first year of the
new recreation center,
Moorestown residents wont have
to pay a dime for its use.
Moorestown Township Council
passed an ordinance that sets
membership requirements at the
new recreation center and opened
the door for an annual member-
ship fee.
Cards will be issued for identi-
fication purposes, however Coun-
cil decided that no membership
fee would be charged for 2014.
The initiative to have annual
members was an idea council
brought forward to evaluate the
efficiency of the recreation cen-
ter and keep track of who is com-
ing in and out.
That way, you know whether
youre meeting service needs or
maybe need to do more to meet
service needs, Councilman Greg
Newcomer said. Its good to have
people registered.

H
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free hundred dollar bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other mo-
torists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its get-
ting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jer-
sey drivers arent the worst in the na-
tion, at least according to an annual
study recently released by CarInsur-
anceComparison.com. In fact, were
only the 32nd worst state-full of driv-
ers. If were only middle of the pack,
wed hate to be on the road in
Louisiana, whose drivers were collec-
tively ranked as the worst in the na-
tion.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its
worth repeating: Slow down out there!
Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive errati-
cally...every time you drive! Its just not
possible that your wife is giving birth
for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. And our ready, willing and able
are out on the roads, trying to get to or
from a New Years celebration.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the worst.
in our opinion
Slow down out there
Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
Your thoughts
How bad is the driving out there? How can
we get better? Should more regulations
be put on New Jersey drivers to improve
safety? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.
center, members must register and possess
an identification card. There will be a re-
placement charge if a card is lost.
While ID cards will be a regular require-
ment with the recreation center, a fee to
use the facility could be an issue that
comes up again next year. Even though
there will be no fee in 2014, the ordinance
allows Council to charge a fee in future
years. A number of township residents ex-
pressed concern about a fee during a coun-
cil meeting in November.
The new recreation center held its grand
opening on Dec. 7. Some of the new ameni-
ties in the center include a gym floor and
more office space for the recreation depart-
ment.
In other news:
In its final meeting of 2013, Council rec-
ognized a number of long-time township
officials for their participation with vari-
ous groups as part of Moorestown Board
and Committee Members Appreciation
Week. It was the seventh year the township
put on the event.
Included in the honorees was Richard
Yeager, who was honored for 25 years of
service to the township.
We made a special effort to make sure
that people who have served particularly
long terms are honored, Newcomer said.
The ceremony capped off a year that
Newcomer said was more productive than
in years past. He credited the hard work by
Council to a pledge that each of them took
at the beginning of the year.
Its a worthwhile thing that weve had a
very productive year, he said.
A resolution passed by council recom-
mends traffic changes at the intersection of
Lenola Road and Route 38.
The new resolution states that council
recommends the prohibition of left-hand
turns onto Route 38 at the intersection. The
recommendation is being made with a new
Wawa under construction at the corner of
the intersection. The store is located at the
former site of Classic Chevrolet.

Six students from Moorestown
Friends School attended The Stu-
dent Diversity Leadership Con-
ference in National Harbor, Md.,
from Dec. 5-7: Andayah Sams,
Nicole Briones, Mia Zayas, Molly
Fischer, Leon Pfeiffer and
Spencer Kelly. Ten faculty mem-
bers accompanied them to attend
the concurrent People of Color
Conference.
Hosted by the National Associ-
ation of Independent Schools,
The Student Diversity Leader-
ship Conference is a multiracial,
multicultural gathering of high
school student leaders from
around the country. Participants
examine issues of social justice,
develop effective cross-cultural
communication skills, practice
expression through the arts, and
learn networking principles and
strategies.
We talked about the six core
cultural identifiers: sexual orien-
tation, gender, race, socioeconom-
ic status, ability and religion,
said Kelly, who also attended the
conference in 2012. My favorite
discussion this year was about
ability. When I think about ability,
I think about what you can do
physically. We talked about emo-
tional, mental and learning dis-
abilities as well. We played a
game called Taboo, where we had
to describe a disability without
using the first six words that
come to mind.
Kelly said that he became
aware of his tunnel vision and
how he was limited by his own ex-
periences.
What we found at the end was
that we didnt have the ability to
talk about ability, he said. I had
a hard time getting past those ini-
tial definitions... What I learned
was that I cant be open-minded
about what I believe and then be
narrow-minded about what some-
one else believes.
For Briones, who had not at-
tended the conference in previous
years, the experience was excit-
ing and life-changing.
I thought, How can this
change my life in two days? But it
did. I understand better why peo-
ple are the way that they are. I feel
more accepting. The atmosphere
was so positive.
One of the most memorable
workshops for Briones was an ac-
tivity called Racebook, where stu-
dents split into chosen affinity
groups and confronted common
stereotypes about their cultures.
She said it was helpful for her to
reclaim the negative descriptions
and reflect on her Ecuadorian
and Cuban background.
I identified as part of the His-
panic and Latina group, she
said. We were positive about our
heritage. We took in the stereo-
types of society and asked, Do we
really look like this? We changed
the insults into positive things.
We identified as good cooks and
family oriented... we watched a
video of Latina actresses who
have made a difference in the in-
dustry.
Kelly, who worked with the
African-American affinity group,
helped lead discussions as an offi-
cial peer facilitator at the confer-
ence. He said one of the most in-
teresting discussions was about
heterosexism.

guests sampled cakes and cookies
made with gingerbread while
touring the house and viewing
and judging more than a dozen
gingerbread creations submitted
by local adults and children.
When the votes were tallied, 358
guests voted for their favorite
entry in various prize categories.
With her expansive and pre-
cisely detailed construction,
Linda Kastner was awarded the
grand prize of a $100 gift card.
Kastner's entry was also named
Most Creative with its innovative
use of edibles in constructing the
perfect "pumpkin patch and farm-
house apple "trees" and frozen
"stream."
The competition in the Youth

was strong with many excellent
entries. A well-constructed cot-
tage featuring a candy studded
walkway won Matt Cicero (age
10) first prize of a $25 gift card.
With so many entries receiving
strong votes, Honorable Mention
gift certificates were also award-
ed to Elijah Cottingham (age 4);

shall (age 9) and Lizzie Brown

We played Jenga, where we

heterosexism was the base of
Jenga, and that couldnt be

and gender were all stacked on
top of that When the tower fell,
heterosexism was still at the base.
When things fall, we need to build
ourselves back up from that.
Every society in the world is built
differently and it can fall apart
differently and build back up dif-
ferently.
The students said they were
also moved by discussions about
socioeconomic background and
the difficult financial decisions
parents make to ensure a better
future for their children. For ex-
ample, they were put into a sce-
nario where they needed to give
up everything in order to pay for
an adopted daughters education.
If a disaster happens, how do
families rebuild? asked Kelly.
Its hard to think about.

MOORESTOWN HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
Allegations over something being in
the water at Moorestown High School
may run rampant, as the boys swim
team is once again in position to com-
pete for a state title despite graduating
18 seniors from last seasons roster.
Our strength is the depth of our jun-
ior class and our swimmers in the cen-
ter lanes, head coach Jeff DeNick said.
Im confident we have one of the
stronger teams in South Jersey when it
comes to the quality in the center of our
lineup.
Even with the loss of several contrib-
utors to graduation, Moorestown
which claimed the South Public B,
Burlington County League, Swim Fast
Relays and South Jersey Coaches Invita-
tional Division B crowns a season ago
looks to pick up right where it left off.
That would be a 16-2 season ending with
an 88-82 loss to Summit High School in
the State Public B championship meet.
Those center lane swimmers that
DeNick spoke of are arguably the best
collection in the state, made up of All-
South Jersey selections sophomore Alex

Martin and junior Zach Fong,
along with juniors JD Schurer,
Devin Nielsen, Matt Lubin and
sophomore Mike Schaeffer. Fong
is coming off a particularly im-
pressive sophomore campaign.
He won the butterfly in 52.09 at
the BCSL championships and
touched first in 52.18 in Division
B of the South Jersey Invitation-
al. He also won the breaststroke
at both meets, clocking 1:01.27 in
the Invitational and 1:02.33 in the
league meet. Fong then finished
sixth in two events at the state in-
dividual championships, the but-
terfly in 50.92 and the individual
medley in 1:55.00. The time in the
fly earned All-America considera-
tion.
DeNick says it is the teams bal-
ance that could help it outlast a
few of the other contenders.
Fong, Martin, Schurer, Schaef-
fer, Lubin and Nielson are all ca-
pable of swimming multiple
events with quality times,
DeNick said. Then you throw in
senior Ryan Caffrey, who is re-
turning from an injury, and its
really a dangerous group. Our
depth stretches across the lanes.
Being a part of the Burlington
County League does Moorestown
no favors but not in the way you
may think. Every team in the
BCL outside of Rancocas Valley
is a co-ed team, which means the
Quakers will not face many diffi-
cult opponents in the regular sea-
son. In years past, DeNick has
arranged for the Quakers to swim
against strong all-boy teams such
as St. Augustine Prep to challenge
his team more and get it prepared
for the state tourney.
Despite the bright outlook for
his team, DeNick knows
Moorestown is vulnerable in
spots, particularly sprints.
One of our goals is to
strengthen our sprint and dis-
tance events as the season pro-
gresses, DeNick said. Although
we have a great group returning,
well need a few meets to
see where we stand as a team
and what we can do going for-
ward.

A beautiful, timeless, masterpiece of a home that you will not
find the likes of anywhere else in town. Walk to the center of
town, enjoy your spacious custom deck, and marvel in this
stately home that can be your forever home. Very rarely do you
come across a home of this caliber with rare wood throughout
the home, as well as many stained glass windows. You would
spend an exorbitant amount of money to match what already
exists in this stately residence. The beauty of the home contin-
ues on the private exterior with grounds that have been cared
for by a master gardener, a slate roof (that's right a SLATE
ROOF!!), the exterior wood under the eaves and the brick
work on the chimney. This one of a kind home awaits your
gatherings, holiday parties, and memories yet to be made.

Seize this once in a lifetime opportunity to own the prestigious
Gray Gables Estate. Once the spring market arrives this home will
be gone to its lucky forever owner, so make your appointment
today! The current owners have thrown their famous Kentucky
Derby at this estate for many years. Your parties, and gatherings
will also become famous because of the one of a kind dining room,
with an ornate chandelier that is staying, and the overall unique-
ness of the home. Take a stroll around the grounds and you will see
why Gray Gables Estate is the house to make your home. Although
you are in the center of town, your 1.97 acre property makes you
feel like you are hidden, and tucked away from the rest of the
world. Your grounds include a two car and one car garage, three
original horse stalls, a pool house that includes a cabana with bar
area, changing room, and storage area, as well as an in-ground
pool. Words cannot do this home justice, seeing is believing.
