MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK 1.0 GENERAL 1.1 Scope 1.1.1 The Intent of this standard specification is to define the requirements of design, engineering, manufacture (assembly) & testing marking, packing, shipping, transportation to site, storage, installation, site testing and commissioning of indoor type MV Power Capacitor bank. 1.1.2 The specific requirements of MV Power Capacitor bank shall be given on data sheets. 1.1.3 All controls, switching devices, and protection features shall be enclosed in an allwelded compartmentalized steel enclosure. The bank shall come fully assembled and ready for interconnection to MV Switchgear (inside the substation). Supplier shall provide all necessary terminations, fittings and required hardware. 1.1.4 1.1.5 1.1.6 Vendor shall furnish any special tools and tackles for installation and maintenance. The make of all accessories and hardware shall be subject to owners approval. In case of any contradiction between various referred standards/specification/data sheets and statutory regulations, it shall be brought to the notice of Client for resolution, before taking a decision. 1.2.4

The components and materials used and the equipment supplied shall conform to high standards of design, engineering and workmanship and shall be suitable for efficient operation and reliable service in service conditions mentioned.

1.3

System Description 1.3.1 The system voltage and frequency shall be as per datasheets and variation in these will not be more than: Voltage: Frequency: 6.6kV 10% 50 Hz 5%

MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK 1.3.2 The equipment shall be designed for a design ambient temperature of +45oC and an altitude not exceeding 1000 meters above mean sea level. Relative humidity of 92% shall be considered for design. 1.3.3 Equipment shall have a design life of 25 years. The capacitor bank shall not require periodic inspection, but major maintenance intervals shall not be before than 5 years. 2.0 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS 2.1 General 2.1.1 Capacitor bank shall comprise of an appropriate number of basic single phase units (minimum 3 Nos. basic unit in parallel per phase), which shall be connected in star formation. 2.1.2 The dielectric used in capacitors shall be all polypropylene or mixed dielectric with low watt loss. The impregnant in the capacitors shall be non- toxic, non-PCB and biodegradable. 2.1.3 The Capacitor bank shall be metal clad, totally enclosed, rigid, compartmentalized design, floor mounting, air insulated and extensible cubicle type. 2.1.4 Capacitors shall be suitable for permanent connection to the electrical distribution system specified. 2.1.5 2.1.6 2.1.7 The capacitor bank shall be automatically switched based on power factor. Forced cooling of the enclosure housing is not acceptable for heat dissipation. The capacitor bank shall be composed of four stages switched by vacuum contactors. 2.1.8 The components described above shall be complete and fully factory assembled except for shipping split. Mounting and interconnection required in the field shall be minimum and simple. 2.1.9 The entire capacitor unit shall not have to be changed due to single capacitor element failure. It shall be able to continue in operation. 2.1.10 Isolation of one capacitor unit in a group should not cause voltage unbalance of more than 110% rated voltage on the remaining capacitors in the group. During the design stage, supplier shall submit the detailed calculation for selection of the capacitor unit rating and total number of units to be used for each stage of the capacitor bank.

MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK 2.1.11 The vendor will perform a post-installation harmonic analysis at the site to verify that harmonic resonance conditions are not created as a result of adding capacitors. 2.2 Rating 2.2.1 2.2.2 Rating of Capacitor bank shall in accordance with the data sheet. Each capacitor units shall be designed to meet the following minimum requirements: Built-in resistors permanently connected across the capacitor elements to discharge the unit voltage after disconnecting to a value of 50V within the time limit as described in IS 13925(for HT capacitors) Suitable for continuous operation at voltage between terminals of 1.10 times the rated voltage, excluding transients. Suitable for continuous operation at line current of 1.30 times the current which occurs at rated sinusoidal voltage and rated frequency excluding transients. The switching of the capacitor bank should be carried out by a re strike free circuit breaker so that the first peak of transient voltage does not exceed 2*sqrt 2 times the applied voltage (rms value) for maximum duration of cycle. Capacitor bank residual voltage after disconnection from mains supply shall be maximum 50volts within 10 minutes. 2.3 Protection of capacitor bank 2.3.1 Following protection is required to be provided on the capacitor bank : a) Inverse time neutral displacement relay b) Timer to prevent reclosure of capacitor bank before completion of discharge 2.3.2 Supplier shall clearly indicate any other protection considered necessary for the safe operation of the capacitor bank. 2.4 Residual Voltage Transformer (RVT) 2.4.1 3 phase dry type residual voltage transformer of adequate capacity to facilitate neutral unbalance protection and rapid discharging of capacitor shall be provided. 2.4.2 Voltage transformers shall be epoxy cast resin type and comply to IS 3156, rated to ensure satisfactory operation of the connected devices and shall be of Class 4.

MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK 2.4.3 The primary winding of voltage transformer shall be star connected while the secondary winding shall be in open delta for connection to neutral phase displacement relay. 2.4.4 The primary winding shall be protected by HRC fuses and secondary winding shall be by MCB in each phase except in the grounded phase of the secondary side. Secondary terminals of the P.T. shall be brought out suitably to a terminal block which will be easily accessible for testing and external connections. 2.4.5 2.5 Terminals shall be marked in accordance with relevant IS.

Series Reactor 2.5.1 2.5.2 Each Capacitor bank shall be provided with suitable series reactor. Air cored and air cooled reactor fulfilling following requirements: The reactor shall be rated for 130% continuous current. The short time rating shall be 16 times the normal current for 2 s. Suitable design calculation shall be submitted at the time of drawing approval, Reactors shall be suitably designed to limit overloading due to presence of harmonics in the system as per recommendations of IS: 13925. The manufacturer shall submit the G.A. Drawings for Capacitor Bank with mounting of series reactor inside the bank

2.6

Basic Construction 2.6.1 General Capacitor bank shall be metal clad enclosed, Floor mounted enclosure with degree of protection IP42 minimum. Capacitor units, surge limiting reactors and discharge devices shall be contained within liquid insolent / coolant filled MS plate tanks. All connection bushings shall be mounted on the side or on the top of the tank within an air filled cable terminal box. The enclosure shall be equipped with anti-condensation heaters of sufficient capacity to prevent the formation of condensation within the enclosure under the service conditions. Equipment shall be provided with lifting lugs capable of lifting the unit in a filled condition.

MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK Cable boxes shall be provided with undrilled removable gland plates for cables. Aluminium or aluminium alloys shall not be used for any external fittings or components. All fasteners and associated hardware, inside and out, shall be stainless steel. Externally accessible hardware shall not be used for support of high-voltage components or switch operating mechanisms within the capacitor bank. The connection between individual capacitor units in the same block shall be such that a failed capacitor unit can be easily replaced. All interconnections between various components shall be preferably carried out with Aluminum bus bar only to avoid fatigue associated with magnetic forces during bank energisation. 2.6.2 Enclosure All components shall be accessible and removable from the front of the enclosure. The compartment containing the load-interrupter switch shall be equipped with a pad-lockable, or key interlocked, to guard against inadvertent entry to the terminals of the load-interrupter switch. Access to any portion of the loadinterrupter switch shall be blocked by the protective screen while allowing access to the load-interrupter main fuses and capacitor compartments. The doors shall be flush with the skin of the enclosure. Each door shall be equipped with stainless steel hinges and hinge pins, and 3-point latching handles. The handles shall be pad lockable. All doors providing access to high voltage compartments shall be equipped with door stays to hold doors in the open position All ventilation louvers shall be located on the front of the enclosure and shall be backed with a permanently installed screen. The removable filters shall have washable, aluminum mesh elements that can be cleaned and services from the outside of the enclosure. 2.6.3 Relay Relays and timers shall be numerical type having dust proof covers. Relay bases shall be keyed to ensure correct contact alignment and shall include retaining clips for the relay. Relays shall have a means of visually indicating they are energised. Timers shall have indication that they are energised and that the timing is in progress.

MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK Protection relays shall have hand-reset facilities and clear operating indication, e.g. light emitting diodes. Non-tripping relays may be self-resetting if an indication of operation remains until hand reset. All numerical relay shall have key pad / keys to allow relay settings from relay front. All hand reset relays shall have reset button on the relay front. 2.6.4 Space Heater The anti-condensation heaters shall be supplied from external 240V AC single phase supply provided by Client. A double pole MCB for switching on the heater and thermostat shall also be provided. 2.6.5 TIMERS The timers shall be electronic, pneumatic or synchronous type with manual/ auto reset features as per the functional requirements. The timers shall be ON delay or OFF delay type as required. 3.0 The repeat accuracy shall be 0.5% or better.

INSPECTION AND TESTS 3.1 Visual checks and tests to prove operation of the equipment and protective devices shall be carried out by the Vendor. Such tests may be witnessed at the discretion of the Owner. 3.2 Routine tests shall be performed on each capacitor in accordance with IS 13925 for HT capacitors to demonstrate satisfactory construction. 3.3 As a minimum, the routine tests shall include the following:Tests on Capacitor Units: Visual examination Sealing Test Measurements of capacitance and output Insulation Resistance between terminals and capacitor container Capacitor loss tangent measurement AC voltage test between terminals AC voltage tests between terminals and container Test for discharge devices

MV POWER CAPACITOR BANK Tests on Capacitor Banks: 3.4 Measurement of capacitance and output and Insulation resistance between terminals and container

Vendor shall submit evidence of type tests on similar units.

4.0

MISCELLANEOUS REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Earthing 4.1.1 Tank earthing provisions shall consist of a copper faced steel earth pad, welded near or on the base for earthing the tank. 4.1.2 4.2 Two M10 earthing connection studs are required for each bank.

Painting 4.2.1 The capacitor shall be cleaned, primed, and painted in accordance with Vendor's standard practice for the environmental conditions specified. Top coat finish shall be Supplier's standard unless otherwise specified in the data sheets. 4.2.2 Supplier shall supply paint, matching each colour used, for field touch-up after installation of the equipment.

4.3

Rating Plate, Labels & Serial Number 4.3.1 A stainless steel rating and connection plate, in accordance with the applicable standards, shall be fixed to a non-removable part of the equipment. The Owner's name and purchase order number shall be included on the rating plate or alternatively a separate plate with this information shall be added. 4.3.2 The equipment shall be identified by a permanently attached stainless steel nameplate, showing the item number and service title assigned to it, on the datasheet. This nameplate shall be mounted next to the rating and connection plate. Labels and danger plates shall be riveted and not fixed by adhesive. 4.3.3 As a minimum, the following information shall be marked indelibly, either directly or by means of a plate, on each capacitor unit: Manufacturers name, order number, serial number, month and year of manufacture. Temperature category Discharge device, if internal, shall be indicated by wording or by the symbol or by the rated resistance in kilo ohms or mega ohms. Connection symbol (All capacitors, except single-phase units having one capacitance only, shall have their connection indicated ) Internal fuses, if included, shall be indicated by word or symbol. Indication for the overpressure or thermal disconnector, if such disconnector is fitted. Insulation level in kV. (Only for units having all terminals insulated from the container) 5.0 SPARE PARTS Bidder shall submit list of spares recommended by him for satisfactory operation of the circuit breakers for first 2 years and rate for each spare shall also be quoted. The purchaser will decide the actual quantity of spare parts to be ordered on the basis of the prices of the spare parts, quoted by the bidder. 6.0 DRAWINGS & DOCUMENTS The Vendor shall furnish drawings in accordance with SDDC form, enclosed with the Bid.
