Hydrex teams carried out a wide range of underwater propeller operations on tankers around the world. # ong the a propeller blade straightening on a 2$%& eter ship in #lgeciras, Spain, a blade cropping on a 1%3& eter vessel in 'lushing, the Netherlands, and a spinner cone (Propeller )oss *ap 'ins +P)*', replace ent on a 110& eter vessel in -otterda , .he Netherlands" Underwater propeller blade straightening in lgeciras /ith three o0 the 0our blades o0 its propeller severely bent, a 2$%& eter tan1er needed a 0ast, on&site solution to restore the propeller2s balance and e00iciency" 3ydrex tea was rapidly obili4ed to the ship2s location close to the 3ydrex o00ice in #lgeciras Spain to per0or a cold straightening o0 the blades" #0ter the e5uip ent arrived at the vessel2s location with one o0 the 3ydrex wor1boats, the tea started the repair with a detailed underwater survey o0 the da aged propeller blades" .he inspection revealed that the three blades had su00ered de0or ations along the trailing edges"

.he tea then care0ully positioned the straightening achine over the bends o0 the trailing edges o0 the 0irst blade and, in close co unication with the tea leader on the wor1 boat, applied pressure to return the bent blade to its original state" .his procedure was then success0ully repeated 0or the other da aged blades, restoring the propeller2s e00iciency" Underwater cropping of damaged propeller blades in !lushing 3ydrex obili4ed a diver6technician tea to carry out a detailed inspection and necessary repair to the da aged propeller blades o0 a 1%3& eter tan1er during the ship2s stop in 'lushing" .o a1e a 0ull assess ent o0 the da age, the tea 0irst per0or ed an underwater inspection" .his revealed that all 0our blades had been da aged" .he a00ected areas o0 the blades there0ore needed to be cropped to restore the propeller2s balance" .he tea then used the in0or ation ac5uired during the inspection to calculate and deter ine the correct easure ents needed to odi0y the trailing edges o0 the propeller blades" .he area to be cropped was ar1ed out on each o0 the 0our blades and veri0ied" Next the divers cropped the blades one by one and ground their edges to give the the correct radius" /hen the cropping was co plete, the 3ydrex technicians polished the blades to a1e sure that any re aining loss o0 e00iciency would be ini al" Underwater Propeller "oss #am !ins $P"#!% installation in &otterdam 3ydrex was contacted to install a P)*' during an oil tan1er2s stop in -otterda " #0ter the tea arrived at the vessel2s location with one o0 the 3ydrex wor1boats, they started the underwater operation with a 0ull inspection o0 the propeller" Next the diver6technicians cleaned the area where the spinner cone was to be installed" .hey then lowered the cone into the water and positioned it on the propeller" /hen this was done, grease was inserted in the space underneath the propeller cone 0or lubrication and the bolts were put on tor5ue and secured with wire, 0inishing the installation o0 the P)*'" .he 3ydrex tea wor1ed around the cloc1 to 0inish the operation as 5uic1ly as possible" )y per0or ing the operation on&site and underwater, the owner o0 both tan1ers could i ediately start en7oying the 0uel savings the syste o00ers" 8therwise he would have had to wait 0or the next scheduled drydoc1ing to have the P)*'2s installed" .his would have lost hi up to two years o0 savings" *alculations show that he will have earned bac1 the oney o0 the underwater installation in about eight wee1s, so the savings 0or the custo er are substantial" Dece ber 20, 2013
