MU INSTRUCTIONS
Whenever more than one loco are coupled together and locos are worked by a single crew, then it is
known as MU operation.
1. The front driving loco is known as leading loco and rear loco is known as Trailing loco.
2. In MU operations 3 electrical jumpers ( B C D ) are connected between locos to operate control
Q44 & Q100. For closing DJ, HBA should be on 1 in both the locos.
4. BLSN switch is provided on the BL box, which controls the feed to VEPT and MTDJ of trailing
loco from leading loco. Its normal position is UP, on switching it down the supply to MTDJ and
VEPT gets cut off and thus DJ of Trailing loco gets tripped and panto also lowers.
5. Closing of DJ can be done for both the locos together or separately. Similarly opening of DJ can be
done for both the locos together or of the rear loco only.
6. Trailing loco DJ can be closed from the trailing loco by pressing BP 2DJ. but can not be opened by
BP1DJ. In case of emergency the DJ of trailing loco can be opened by removing its CCPT fuse.
7. Opening of DJ for leading loco alone not possible.
8. Trailing loco BL must be locked to avoid parallel connection
9. In case of ICDJ in trailing loco, due to CCPT melting , the trailing loco panto will not lower (as
in the single loco). Because leading loco feeds the supply to the VEPT of trailing loco. So, check
CCBA,CCPT fuse incase of ICDJ on trailing loco.
10. When RGCP cuts in 9.5kg/cm2 both locos VEAD will function.
11. When BLPV is switched ON both locos PV will work through 311 jumper and when HPV is also

switched ON both PVs in both loco will work but in trailing loco MU2B on trail position, VA1
release valve is not lifted hence PV to train pipe is closed. Hence leading loco PV only will create
the vacuum.
When leading loco Driver operate ZQWC, on the trailing loco QWC relay also will energise
When leading loco PVEF is pressed the trailing loco PVEF also will energise
If CTF1,CTF2,CTF3 is thrown to breaking side relay QV64 is deenergised through BLCP and B16
jumper trailing loco VEF will also energise
If leading loco is not energised trailing loco auxiliary circuit cannot be started even if BLCP,
BLCPD or BLVMT is put ON
If leading loco DJ trips, DJ N/O I/L in auxiliary control circuit wire No.100 gets deenergised, so
trailing loco contractor C105, C106, C107 will open. If loco is working above 6 th notch, trailing
loco DJ will also trip.
If leading loco reversers are not thrown in proper direction LSB remains glowing, Driver will
experience total loss of tractive effort without GR progression in leading loco only, but trailing
loco will respond. Since Q49 relay will energise after taking one notch in both locos.
If trailing loco CTF1,CTF2,CTF3 are not thrown to braking side LSB of leading loco will glow,
even though Driver can try for RB from leading loco provided Q50 relay is energise in leading
loco.
19. Trailing loco QD energise, Q48 also energise in turn energise the relay Q51 of trailing loco
through C1 jumper leading loco Q51 also energise, Driver will experience auto regression on first
notch with LSP glowing on both locos.
20. If Driver experience ICDJ on MU loco, Check GR dum indication on zero and not LSGR, since if
any one loco GR comes to zero LSGR will low.
21. If any fuses melting repeatedly in leading or trailing loco, HOBA should be placed in OFF position
in both locos.
