SHORT GENERAL SUMMARY of Ohsawas Macrobiotics

The term Macrobiotics can be translated as "great life. In Greek macro means big or great, and biotic means concerning life. So the word refers to the "big view of life." This suggests that we should relax our small, rigid views of the world, so that the underlying unity of nature can be sensed. Macrobiotics is a philosophy of eating that originated in Japan. George Ohsawa (1893-1966) is often considered to be the founder of the Macrobiotic diet and philosophy, although he himself never claimed to be the originator. He always gave credit to his own Japanese teachers (i.e. Sagen Ishitsuka), and various ancient Chinese medical scriptures (i.e. The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine). Ohsawa was born & died in Japan, but travelled extensively and lived on various continents. Together with his main students Michio Kushi and Herman Aihara he imitated a fairly wide spread movement around the world. Macrobiotics clarifies the profound relationship between food & health from an energetic standpoint. It is a dietary principle that accounts for differing climatic and geographical considerations, as well as a wide range of individual factors. Ohsawa often quoted that "The true sage is concerned not with the cure of disease but with its prevention." Health is the natural reward of a life of self-control and moderation, lived in conformity with the laws of Nature. Ohsawa proclaimed that Macrobiotics is the basic principle not only of individual health on all levels, but of world peace as well.

QUOTES
Some provocative lines from one of George Ohsawas most famous books: ZEN MACROBIOTICS Macrobiotics is neither an empirical folk medicine nor a mystical, palliative, religious, scientific, spiritual, symptomatic technique. It is the biological and physiological application of Oriental philosophy and medicine, a dialectical conception of the infinite universe. (p.19) Happiness or misery, health or sickness, freedom or slavery- all depend upon the manner in which we conduct our daily lives and activities. (p.20) In the kingdom of life, one must learn everything for himself and by himself. There is no school or university because the infinite universe itself is the eternal school; there is no teacher because one can learn from everything and everyone, day and night. A strong, cruel enemy is particularly valuable; without him, one becomes idle, weak and stupid. (Ch. 4) The man who cannot cure himself, who cannot achieve his own freedom, happiness and absolute justice by and for himself, without being helped by others or by mechanical devices, is destined to be exploited and devoured, to feed worms and microbes. He has no need to go to hell after death for his existence is already a living hell. (p.47) If you are unhappy (psychologically or psychologically) you must cure yourself without depending on others. Otherwise, your cure is incomplete, for you have lost your independence and freedom. (p.47) **Ohsawas main message is that each person needs to develop his/her own judgment in order to gain complete freedom from following any diet prescribed by others, including Ohsawa himself. (p.52)
