We would like to congratulate the following students who were elected to serve as Grade Level Representatives on the MS
Student Council:
They join Mari Akune, Enzo Mapua, Georgia Raniolo, Ayra Siddiq and Nick Ching who serve as the Executive Board. Under
the guidance of Ms. Jennifer Diaz and Mrs. Susan Piper we look forward to working with them and the Student Council
activities that are being planned.
On Tuesday, September 8 we will be hosting the Middle School Open House. The evening will begin in the Fine Arts
Theater at 5:00 P.M. with a brief welcome and introduction. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to run through your
child’s class schedule and meet the teachers.
As part of our wellness program and ongoing commitment to health education, consultants from Freedom from Chemical
Dependency (FCD) Educational Services will visit ISM from September 14 – 18. FCD is a non-profit organization that
provides substance abuse prevention education for schools and colleges in the United States and around the world.
Since 1976, they have taught over a million students of all ages. Their mission is to:
• Provide educational communities with the guidance and training necessary to implement comprehensive, effective
approaches to substance abuse prevention
• Educate students, parents, teachers, and school administrators on the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol
and other drugs
• Promote awareness of drug addiction, including alcoholism, as a progressive, chronic and often fatal disease
• Teach students and adults how to recognize the early warning signs of substance abuse and to intervene appropriately
• Empower young people to make healthy, responsible choices regarding alcohol and other drug use
• Encourage and support the non-use of alcohol and other illegal or illicit drugs during the growing years.
A parent meeting on Monday, September 14 starting at 5:30 P.M. in the Little Theater has been scheduled and all
parents are invited to attend. For the duration of their stay, FCD presenters will meet with students, counselors, wellness
teachers and administrators. Based on feedback from last year, we are confident that this program will be a valuable
educational experience for our school community. We hope you will join us on Monday, September 14.
We would like to remind parents to notify the MS office in the event that both parents are going to be out of the country. It is
also requested that parents complete the Temporary Guardianship Form so that we have the most current contact
information for a student. Please understand that we request this information in the event of any medical or other
emergency regarding a student that requires immediate attention.
On Thursday and Friday, September 10-11, there will be no classes for students. The faculty will be engaged in curricular
work and in-service activities to strengthen the instructional program and learning for students. Classes resume on Monday,
September 14.
Sincerely,
I am happy to observe that the vast majority of family employees and appointed representatives have now
obtained the new school passes (IDs). Those that have not yet done so should be aware that the old IDs with
blue borders are no longer valid and will be confiscated by the guards if used in an attempt to gain access to
the school.
Over the last few days we have had a number of incidents of “swerving” or inappropriate lane changing. This
practice can cause traffic congestion and is also dangerous. We ask those drivers coming to ISM to follow the
flow system both within the campus and as they approach the school. In particular, drivers should avoid cut-
ting across lanes.
I ask parents to please remind their employees that they may not remain on campus across the school day
waiting for students. They are only allowed on campus during drop-off and pick-up times. Further to this, they
should remain waiting in the designated waiting areas and not enter into the building or obstruct the en-
trances to the covered parking area.
Firearms may not be brought onto campus. If a security escort arrives at school with a weapon they should
check it in with the security guards at the gate. It will be returned at the exit gate. Anybody found in posses-
sion of a firearm within the campus is liable to have their privilege of access to campus suspended.
I am grateful to that large majority of members of the ISM community who are following our traffic manage-
ment and security regulations. Those few who are not as yet, I urge you in the interests of us all to do so.
Mike Flynn
Regards,
Mike Flynn
