MODELS OF STRATEGIC PLANNING Models Of Strategic Planning The CIEE is a nongovernmental organization whose mission is helping people to gain knowledge and develop skills that will help them in the world that is globally interdependent, as well as culturally diverse. The fulfill their mission creating programs that allow for US college

students and educators to study abroad and also allowing international students to study and also work in the US. By providing these opportunities to the students and educators, the CIEE fosters the exchange of ideas, beliefs as well as experiences from different parts of the world (CIEE, n.d).

Strategic planning refers to the process that an organization uses when setting up its strategy which defines the direction of the organization. There are different models of strategic planning. The issue based strategic planning model uses the major issues that are facing the organization to develop the strategy for the organization. Vision based strategic planning on the other hand looks the mission and the vision of the organization. It uses the vision and the mission to set up goals that will be used when setting up the strategy of the organization (McNamara, n.d)

Vision based strategic model is used by organizations that are extremely busy or those that have never done any strategic planning. The issue based approach on the other hand is used by organizations that have limited resources and therefore have to pick the major issues that affect the entire organization (McNamara, n.d)

The processes of strategic planning between the two models are also different. For instance in the issue based approach, the process involves collecting the major issues, coming up

MODELS OF STRATEGIC PLANNING with different ways of addressing the issues, compiling the issues into a document and monitoring the implementation of the plan (McNamara, n.d).

The vision based model on the other hand involves a larger and more elaborate process. The mission of the organization is first defined; the vision statement is then defined. The goals for the organizations are set and then strategies are formulated. After the formulation of the strategies, action plans for the strategies are defined. The action plan document is prepared and then the plan is implemented and monitored (McNamara, n.d).

The vision based strategic model is more comprehensive for an organization that is planning to make long term decisions. This is because it bases its strategies on the vision and the mission of the organization. This makes it more effective for organizations that are still young and the organizations that want to map out their future plans. The Issue based model is a bit short sited in its approach and cannot be recommended for an organization that is young because it will not help the organization map out its long term plan (MyStrategicPlan, n.d).

The most applicable model for the CIEE organization is the vision based model of strategic planning. This is because this model is more comprehensive and allows an organization to make strategies to achieve its mission and future goals. This is important for the CIEE because it is a nongovernmental organization that has a mission of helping students and educators to get international exposure. By using the mission and the goals of the organization, the vision based model will help the organization come up with future strategies and action plans that will ensure that the organization achieves its goals (MyStrategicPlan, n.d).
