Assignment Number: 1
Assignment Title: The effects of exercise on the skeletal system
Learning Outcomes: Pupils to learn about the structure and function of the skeletal
system and how it is affected by exercise
Assignment Deadline: Friday 18th September
Scenario
You are a fitness instructor at your local Sports Centre, and you have been approached by
the Sports Centre Manager to design a booklet/poster with information on the skeleton,
bones and joints within the body that is to be handed out within the fitness suite.

show its structure vertebral column, clavicle, scapula,
humerus, radius, ulna, pelvis, femur,
tibia, fibula, patella, phalanges, carpals
and tarsals.
2 (P1) Describe the 5 main functions of Protection; movement; shape; support;
the skeleton. blood production

4 (P2) Identify the SHORT TERM AND Bullet point a list of short and long term
LONG effects of exercise on effects (e.g: increased production of
bones and joints synovial fluid)
5 (M1) Select 3 different types of 1) Label the joint being used (e.g:
movement within physical activity knee, elbow)
(use pictures) and identify the 2) Label the type of joint (e.g:
movement occurring at the hinge, ball & socket)
synovial joints 3) Label the major bones that
make up that joint (e.g: elbow =
humerus, ulna, radius)
4) Label the type of movement
(e.g: flexion)
6 (M2) Explain the SHORT AND LONG Explain ‘why’ and give reasons why the
