MT. SINABUNG, PHILIPPINES TYPHOON TRIGGER IMMEDIATE RESPONSE
Jakarta - Some 17,000 people have been !evacuated at the time of this writing !to 31 centres for Internally Displaced Persons in the Mount Sinabung region of North Sumatra, according to the UN Ofce for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Mount Sinabung has erupted 88 times since it became active in early September -- mostly volcanic ash eruptions with several eruptions also producing pyroclastic ows. A joint mission of OCHA, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and World Food Programme (WFP) was sent to Karo District, North Sumatra, to observe and document lessons learned from the ongoing emergency response. In the Philippine some four and half million people were displaced by typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). More than 2.6 million people had received food supplies from WFP and its partners, while clean water and sanitation had been restored in

many areas by UNICEF. Health clinics and hospitals have being mapped and reopened by the Government with the World Health Organization (WHO). Shelter materials and supplies to help with home reconstruction have been distributed by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia also launched the rst AIDS Digital application in AsiaPacic for information about HIV testing, antiretroviral therapy, HIV and prevention. www.aidsdigital.net. Health Minister H.E. Nafsiah Mboy, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Ahok Tjahaja, the Director General for Communicable Diseases of the Ministry of Health and the Indonesia Business Coalition on AIDS, as well as representatives of UNAIDS and International Labour Organization (ILO) were on hand for the announcements. There are an estimated 610,000 people living with HIV in Indonesia, with 27,000 recorded deaths due to AIDS. The pinnacle event of World Aids Day marked the commitment of major employers to combat the virus in the workplace and was hosted Indonesian Business Coalition on AIDS with a ceremony at Balai Samudra, Kelapa Gading, which included the participation of the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration H.E. Muhaimin Iskandar.

WHAT IS VCT@WORK?
An ILO (with UNAIDS) initiative to reach 5 million workers worldwide with voluntary and condential HIV counseling and testing by 2015. VCT@WORK will ensure that people who test positive are referred to HIV services for care, support, and treatment if needed. VCT@Work is part of the push to achieve Millennium Development Goal 6 (and the global target of reaching 15 million people living with HIV with lifesaving antiretroviral treatment by 2015). In Indonesia, the VCT@WORK initiative will build on previous ILO workplace programmes and aims to assist 10,000 workers by the end of 2013, with an overall target of 350,000 workers by the end of 2015.!

INDONESIA JOINS THE GLOBAL PUSH TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN
Jakarta - Shining a spotlight on the often hidden scourge of violence against children, a new campaign was launched on 20 November. In Indonesia like in any other country, too often, abuse occurs in the shadows: undetected, unreported, and - even worse too often accepted, said UNICEF Deputy Representative and Ofcer in Charge, Marc Lucet. We all have a responsibility to make the invisible, visible, he said.

Lucet added that Government needs to enforce legislation to prohibit all violence against children as well as individuals whom we encourage to speak up when they witnesses abuse. Three Ministries (Womens Empowerment and Child Protection,

Social Affairs, and Communications and Information Technology) held the joint launch in Jakarta. In Indonesia, UNICEF is supporting a number of prevention and response programmes. In collaboration with the Provincial Ofce of Womens Empowerment

in South Sulawesi UNICEF is developing training modules for parents and communities to address the intergenerational impact of violence against children. In Papua, UNICEF is supporting a safe schools programme that prompts teachers to take up new methods for

instilling positive and non-violent discipline in the classroom. The campaign #EndViolence against Children includes a Bahasa Indonesia Public Service Announcement (PSA) recorded by UNICEF Indonesia Goodwill Ambassador Ferry Salim.

IN CLIMATE CHANGE ERA, QUINOA HAILED AS KEY CROP
Jakarta Tomatoes, potatoes, and even the peanuts used to make the bumbu kacang that accompanies a tasty Indonesian satay are all part of the South Americas Andean regions culinary contribution to the global diet. Now another ancient Andean crop is being hailed as a potential super-food that could improve nutrition and provide food security in vulnerable communities: quinoa. It is a climate-smart food, said FAO Representative Mustafa Imir, who added that its cultivation may nd applications in regions of Indonesia that are highly affected by drought, such as NTT. He was speaking at an International Year of Quinoa event in Jakarta that saw the participation of the Embassies of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Argentina.

Jakarta - The decades-long partnership between Indonesia and the United Nations was the theme of this years UN Day celebration in Jakarta, attracting more than 200 highlevel participants for a seminar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Various aspects of the partnership were also highlighted during the October UN4U Indonesia outreach campaign reaching some 5,440 participants in 26 universities and schools across the nation. This years UN Day celebrations centered the UN Day seminar and a photo exhibition in collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The photo exhibition showcased examples of the Organizations work in Indonesia, as well as Indonesias history in the United Nations. Examples on display included Indonesias contribution to UN peacekeeping, commitments to combating climate change and reducing risk from disasters, as well as its efforts to make progress on the Millennium Development Goals. The exhibition, organized by UNIC Jakarta, is currently touring several university campuses in the metro Jakarta area following its ofcial opening in the historic Pancasila building in Jakarta. In his keynote address at the UN Day seminar H.E. Wardana, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia said that "the United Nations has long been a worthy partner of Indonesia. And I am condent that it will remain the case in the years ahead." "As a democratic, pluralistic country with an enterprising generation of young people, Indonesia will be a bedrock of support for the United Nations in years to come. We welcome this engagement said Mr. Douglas Broderick, the United Nations Resident Coordinator. in Indonesia.

DISABILITIES

Disability was marked at the Epicentrum XXI cinema by ILO in cooperation with the Kampung Halaman Foundation with the launching of SAMA, a video diary produced by persons with disabilities that tells of everyday life obstacles face by the disabled in Indonesia. A second video emphasized Jakartas facilities and infrastructure, with the message that people with disabilities should be involved in all decision making process related to public facilities. Through this video, I would like to let people know that deaf people have sign language that is equal to
