Students in good academic standing are eligible to participate in the optional Industrial Internship Program (IIP). Following your third year, you work with one of our corporate partners for a 12- to 16-month period. This paid internship enables you to strengthen your skills and participate in real-world projects while earning a competitive salary. At the completion of the internship, you return to Ryerson for your final year. The IIP is available to students in the Aerospace, Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering programs.

The lab experiments allowed us to see how theories applied to real situations. Before I came to Ryerson, I had a professional pilot licence and, through the programs wide range of study topics, I was able to understand much more about aircraft and flight in general.

Aerospace Engineering
When it comes to career options in aerospace engineering, the sky isnt the limit; its just the beginning. The aerospace industry in Canada is among the top five largest in the world. Among the industrys more than 70,000 members, who consist mainly of engineers, scientists and technicians, 30 per cent are based in Ontario. For those who are fascinated by all things flight-related, employment opportunities can be found in military and commercial aircraft or spacecraft engineering, air transportation, space exploration, space-based telecommunications, research, teaching, military service, or in associated technology-focused fields such as transportation, information and the environment.

The university has joined with leading Canadian aerospace companies to create the Ryerson Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (RIADI). The partnership enables selected students to work on real, industry-related projects during the summer. While contributing to the innovation process, students develop a network of contacts, building relationships that may lead to job offers after graduation.

The great thing about the Aerospace Engineering program is that it enables students to take theories learned in class and labs, and apply them to practical situations. For example, the Ryerson Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (RIADI) gives second- and third-year students the opportunity to apply for paid summer internships with highly reputable aerospace companies. My experience in RIADI has given me the skills and knowledge I need to be successful in the future. Ryan Coelho, 4th year Aerospace Engineering student

Biomedical Engineering
When engineering principles are applied to medical problems, humans benefit from new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. Biomedical engineering may be a relatively new field, but it has already made a significant impact in the longevity and quality of life for many people. Without this evolving discipline, defibrillators, cardiac pacemakers, insulin pumps and artificial joints would only exist in science fiction. As a biomedical engineer, you hold the promise of making a tangible difference in the health of humanity. Chemical Engineering Co-op

Ingenuity is the calling card of chemical engineering. Every day, scientific and engineering principles combine to produce innovative materials, products, processes and energy sources. As the masters of research and development, chemical engineers are the driving force behind environmentally friendly fuels, improved solid-waste treatment, cleaner air and water, better-tasting food and new pharmaceuticals. Your own discoveries can make a difference. Chemical Engineering Co-op graduates find employment opportunities in diverse fields, such as environmental technology, safety and health, food and beverage, fuels and advanced materials, electronics and biotechnology

I chose to study chemical engineering because I wanted to work in the oil and gas sector, and I selected Ryerson because I believed its unique program would help me realize this aspiration. The details The spirit of competition

We often take the built environment for granted. As we conduct our busy lives, roads, bridges, stadiums, airports, high-rise buildings and power grids arent always top of mind. In truth, however, tremendous thought is invested in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of these structures and facilities. And civil engineers lead the charge. Without overstating their importance, civil engineers create the infrastructure to support our civilization. Do you want to develop cities and structures from the ground up? Employment opportunities exist in geoenvironmental, transportation, geotechnical, structural and geomatics engineering, and the project management field. In addition, graduates from the Geomatics Engineering option are prepared for careers in legal surveying and the geomatics industry. www.civil.ryerson.ca

Industrial Engineering
Can people and processes co-exist? The answer is yes, thanks to industrial engineers. A mix of management and technology, the field of industrial engineering considers the human element in the design and operation of complex systems. How people work and think must be taken into account when companies are trying to improve productivity, quality, safety, efficiency and performance standards. On top of that, industrial engineers balance the intricacies of information systems, resources, financial systems, scheduling and production planning. With their ability to reconcile the demands of multiple systems, industrial engineers can be found in many areas of the service and manufacturing industries. Examples include health care, transportation and distribution, financial services and government organizations.

Some might argue that machinery, not money, makes the world go around. Machines intersect with our lives in many waysfrom warm homes to cool cars to mechanical devices that help people with physical disabilities. When it comes to improving technology, mechanical engineers are constantly conceiving new ideas. For these masterminds, if you will pardon the expression, the wheels are always turning. If you would like to turn your curiosity into a career, employment opportunities exist in research and development, field support, technical sales, management and consulting, and in every facet of manufacturing, including the automotive, aerospace, electronic and pharmaceutical industries. www.mie.ryerson.ca
