MAAE 3202 MOCK FINAL i) You are required to design a 2m long high pressure tubing that cannot exceed 380 kg in mass and the internal diameter must not be less than 150 mm. What is the maximum internal pressure the tubing can withstand if steel having the material properties listed below is used? Using the pressure calculated above, you decided to compound two cylinders to increase the maximum allowable pressure by shrink fitting a cylinder made of steel onto another cylinder made of 6061-T6 aluminum. To stay within the mass constraint, the internal diameter of the inner cylinder is 150 mm while the nominal outer diameter is 280 mm. The outer diameter of the steel cylinder is 300 mm. The radial interference of the shrink fit is 0.1 mm. According to Trescas yield criterion, will this design meet the objectives? A load P acts at the free end of a beam that is simply supported as shown in Figure 2a). The beam has a uniform cross-section and its dimensions and area properties are given in Figure 2b). a. Using the Mohrs circle, determine the principal moments of area of the cross section. b. Determine where the maximum bending moment occurs and indicate of the sketch of the cross-section, the direction of the moment vector and the neutral axis. c. If the maximum bending stress is not to exceed 280 MPa, what is the largest permissible value of P?

The aluminum alloy frame ABC shown in Figure 3 is built in at A and pin jointed at C where it is restrained from vertical displacement. It has a uniform cross-section with flexural rigidity EI = 59.0x103 N-m2. Using Castiglianos theorem determine the vertical deflection at B when P = 2000 N and R = 0.5 m.

A uniform thin-walled cantilever has a length of 2m, a uniform wall thickness 2 mm and a cross-section in the shape of an open equilateral triangle with a narrow slit at D as shown in Figure 4. The dimension of the side walls is 2c = 60 mm. An end load is applied at A. If the angle of twist in the section is not to exceed 10 degrees, what is the largest magnitude of P allowed? The cantilever is made out of an aluminum alloy with shear modulus = 27 GPa. The second moment of area about the horizontal z-axis is: Iz = 2c3t.
