10:00-11:00 a.m. Session 1: Alena & Stephen Shellenbean Level: Everyone Description: There are hundreds of skills we use every day while we are preparing and while we are in character, including the skills of the historian, the educator the actor, and more. Do you have your favorites? Are you looking to increase your skills? Maybe you ve been doing this without a good idea of what it is you are actually doing. Stephen and Alena Shellenbean will lead an activity and follow it up with a group discussion. Every attendee will leave with a new appreciation of what they already know and what they have still to learn (yes, everyone.) Session 2: Myth Magic Kandie Carle, K & C Entreprises Level: Everyone How they do hold on! Using historian Mary Theobald's book, Death by Petticoat: American History Myths Debunked as a launching point, let's get together and discuss the most prevalent myths with which we are faced, and how to and how NOT to address them.

PART 2 Session 2: In the Moment: Colonial Williamsburg s New Approach for Mixing First- and Thirdperson Interpretation Kimberly Costa, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Level: Everyone In order to promote visitor interaction, answer questions and reduce confusion, Colonial Williamsburg introduced the concept of In the Moment interpretation in 2013. This technique allows interpreters to be a Person of the Past, but gives them the ability to answer any modern questions a visitor might pose. This session will give the basics needed to seamlessly flow from first- to third-person and back again. This is a great session for vendors, sutlers, small museums with limited staff, independent contractors and those wishing to dip their toes into the first-person pool.

1:45p.m. 2:45 p.m. Session 1: Transitions from Third- to First-Person: Lessons from Nova Scotia Highland Village Part 1 Peter Pacey, Nova Scotia Highland Village Level: Everyone Nova Scotia Highland Village has a mandate to tell the story of the Gaels in New Scotland and to promote the preservation of the Gaelic language and culture. Based on studies and sound decisionmaking, NSHV resolved to transition from third-person interpretation to first-person interpretation in 2010. For the past three years, Peter Pacey has been leading staff through a comprehensive program designed to enable them to bring the site to life using characters, stories and folklore. Pacey based his work on Stacy Roth s Past into Present and his own experience of three decades in the field. This presentation will provide an overview of the process and will highlight lessons learned especially as it relates to fulfilling visitor expectations and the use of folklore. Session 2: The Soap Box: Persuading with a Passionate Performance Kimberly Costa and Ronald S. Carnegie, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation First-person interpreters are often asked to present or promote difficult, unfamiliar and foreign ideas to their visitors and often asked to sell them an idea, just like a used car. But what if you don t believe in the ideas or sometimes don t even understand the views you are asked to promote? Using an improvisational exercise, participants will learn to use their passions to persuade visitors to fall in line with their point of view! 2:45 p.m. 3:00 p.m. Break 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. Session 1: Transitions from Third- to First-Person: Lessons from Nova Scotia Highland Village Part 2 Session 2: Interpreting American Icons Ronald S. Carnegie, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Level: Everyone Explore the pitfalls and hazards of accurately portraying beloved historical icons and challenging the visitor s cherished myths and fond folktales. 4:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Explore Colonial Williamsburg s Historic Area on your own and get ready for tonight s First-Person Dinner.

In this PowerPoint presentation and discussion, Kandie Carle will go over her Do s and Don'ts on the use of extant garments and accessories during interpretive presentations. Session 2: Props, Demo s and Disasters, OH MY! Part 1 Melissa Blank, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Level: Beginner/Intermediate Anyone who has heard of Dorothy s Adventures in Oz will know that no matter how well you plan ahead there will always be an unexpected problem or mistake that could potentially derail your first-person program. Often times, this is a result of the props being used in a program or demonstration. Through this interactive session, participants will discuss and participate in mock programs to develop skills to quickly improvise their way through an unexpected witch moment! Session 2: Get Real Alena & Steven Shellenbean, Autumn Tree Productions and Living History Podcast Level: Everyone A great way to connect with your audience and bring history to life is to portray the less-savory aspects of human beings. Stephen and Alena Shellenbean will lead a discussion about using personality types and conflict, the delights and the downfalls. We ll talk about humor, politics, uncomfortable emotions, even stereotypes. What is your favorite foible? 12:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. Session: Round Table Discussion All Presenters Level:Everyone Join in a roundtable discussion with the various presenters on first-person topics. 1:00 p.m. Retreat Concludes: Thanks for Being a Part of It!
