LAKEOHRID,monumentofnature,isoneoftheoldestandthedeepestlakeoftheBalkans,withamaximumdepthof288m(940ft).Itwas
formedintheTertiaryperiod,betweentwoandthreemillionyearsago,andcoversanareaof358km2(138sqmi).Itis30.4kmlongby14.8
kmwideatitsmaximumextentwithashorelinelengthof87.53km.Therearemorethan200typesofendemicorganismslivinginthelake,
and70percentoftheplantsandanimalsinLakeOhridareofendemiccharacters.ThemostknownistheOhridtrout.Boththecityandthe
lakehavebeendeclaredaUNESCOCulturalandNaturalWorldHeritageSite,makingOhridasoneofthemostpopulartouristdestinationsin
RepublicofMacedonia.
