The University of Memphis: College of Education: HSS Dept BATTLECLASS PHED 1464: Warriors Welcome!

SALUTATIONS, WARRIORS!! You are about to embark on a semester-long course designed to give you knowledge of what using a sword in life-like combat would really be like - but without all the pain and damage! It is a fun, unique experience to learn how to swordfight. I congratulate you on your interest and hope that you have the aptitude and personal spirit to continue on in a regular training program and join with many other students in a quest to earn the title of WARLORD! ******************************************** WHAT TO WEAR Each time you come you need to be prepared to workout physically...bring a duffel bag with sweats, tshirts, tennis shoes, and a towel. Do NOT attend class in loafers, jellies, crocs, flip flops, bare feet, or anything other than athletic shoes. You will be counted as absent if you do not come prepared as specified in proper workout garb. Once we begin really working, shorts and jeans are not wise. Instead, light exercise pants or sweatpants would work better. When training, you will sweat. So bring a small towel. Also, your own water bottle would be smart. Furthermore, bring at least a pad and a pencil...for there will be times when you will want to write some wisdom down from my pontifications and you will want to be ready. WHAT YOU NEED DOCUMENTS: I have supplementary materials that you need to obtain. GO HERE: http://www.battlemasters.net/programs/uofmbattleclass/index.html To download the Coursework in a PDF format. Print it out and put it in your Binder and BRING TO CLASS! EQUIPMENT: We will supply one weapon that you will use throughout the course: the padded Kodachi (shortsword). The padded Katana (longsword) and the Mask must be purchased by you. That is the basic set and it costs $99. If you want to own BOTH weapons plus the mask, choose the deluxe set: the cost is $175 (shipping incl). The mask and longsword are mandatory to properly participating and completing this course. YOU MUST ORDER THIS EQUIPMENT BY THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES. Go here to order your required set of equipment: http://www.battlemasters.net/programs/uofmbattleclass/index.html WHAT I EXPECT - ATTENDANCE I expect that since you signed up for this ELECTIVE course, that you truly have an interest in swordplay and battle/fantasy weapons fighting. Thus, you will make time on your schedule to accommodate our course schedule. We will usually introduce new material on Monday/Wednesday and then we will train/practice/spar on Wed/Fridays. So - funerals and weddings I understand. DEATHLY ill I understand. Any other excuse for not attending will count against you. I will let you miss ONE CLASS before it begins to count against you. Attendance and participation are THE MAJOR portion of this grade. Personally, I don't care if you're auditing or not. Either attend or do not waste my time. But lets say you DO miss a class - because of an illness or blessed family event - there is hope yet. You may make up any missed class by coming to my Warlord BattleClass on Monday evenings at 8pm at my Collierville school at 369 Distribution Parkway, Collierville, TN 38017. Please call 901-861-7001 or my cell below if you decide you want to come - well want to know to expect you.

The University of Memphis: College of Education: HSS Dept BATTLECLASS PHED 1464: Warriors Welcome!
COURSEWORK or "So, like, what do we DO?" You are going to learn how to handle a kodachi, katana, and bo staff. You are going to learn how to attack and defend with these weapons. You are going to learn impressive kata with each of these weapons. You are going to play the most awesome battle games. You are going have fun unleashing your inner hero! PERSONAL CHALLENGES or "I injured myself long ago and..." From time to time, I have a student who has a physical limitation due to some external reason. Please understand this course is VERY athletic in which the movement is similar to tennis, the intensity is similar to sprinting, and the momentary stresses on certain parts of your body (knees, ankles, primarily) can be tremendous. If you come into the class with an injury or limitation due to previous circumstances then you are going to have to monitor and pace yourself so that you don't overdo. I salute those of you who push on and do this because you REALLY want to - just be aware it won't be easy... OPPORTUNITIES or "Is that all?" As I mentioned already, if you decide youd like to get more practice in then there will be an opportunity of Mondays at 8pm out at Collierville Arts Academy. I normally charge $75/month to the general public. But for you U of M students, I give a 50% discount! Just let me know if you get interested in that. THE MIDTERM IS NOT HARD The midterm is a small presentation project using a foamcore system and it is a small-scale research project. More on that in the coursework download. THE FINAL and GRADING DETAILS My final is the coolest on campus. No one scores less than 100. I do not allow it. The final consists of a practical section where youll demonstrate key skills and a written portion involving multiple-choice, select the right term, short definitions, and short answer thought problems. Since it is open notes and very much like regular classes. You will have no excuse for not making 100. You will not leave until you do. GRADE BREAKDOWN: Participation MidTerm Project 50% (attendance and participation) 30% (see details on MidTerm)

Final/Practical Exam 20%
