When it comes to protecting the quality and performance of WeatherBoards Fiber Cement siding, every step of the process is importantfrom manufacturing to installation. By following the simple guidelines in this brochure, you can ensure you get the most out of WeatherBoards Fiber Cement siding, and a finished result of which you, and your customers, can be proud.
Phase 1: Ordering/Delivery
Selecting the right materials
In addition to WeatherBoards Fiber Cement siding, youll need other materials to complete your project. Refer to the Fiber Cement Siding ShoppingList on the inside of this brochure for a list of those materials.
Coordinating delivery
Whether your local distributor or lumberyard is delivering your siding to the job site or youre delivering it yourself, its important to establish a delivery plan ahead of time. Identify the drop location on your job site and communicate this to the project manager, your own installation crew and your siding supplier who will deliver the materials. In some cases, its appropriate to divide your order into multiple drop locations around the job site. Multiple drop locations can mean you do not have to carry the product as far from the pallet to the cutting table to the scaffolding, thereby increasing your productivity. See the diagram to the right for an example of multiple drop locations. In addition to planning drop locations, follow these steps for a smooth delivery: 1. Ensure the proper delivery equipment is utilized, including: Delivery truck with mounted forklift. Delivery truck with mounted crane. Flatbed delivery truck and job site forklift. Note: Siding units are long and heavy, and will have a tendency to sag if not properly supported with a forklift or a crane during the unloading process. Ensure that forks are spread 60" apart measuring the interior of the forksto avoid pallet deflection. 2. Identify job site hazards Find or create a safe path into and out of the job site. When loading and unloading fiber cement pallets, ensure there is a clear path in which to transport the pallets to the storage location. Hitting hard obstacles, such as a curb, can shock the pallet and damage the product. Locate and avoid any hazards, such as utility boxes, water shutoff valves, stakes, scrap lumber with exposed fasteners, mud, standing water, and steep slopes.
Stacking guidelines
WeatherBoards Fiber Cement siding should only be stacked if ordered in bulk and stored on pavement or firm, flat and level ground. Recommended stacking heights are indicated in the chart to the right.
Phase 3: Handling
Breaking a pallet
1. Remove banding and pallet shroud, taking care to avoid damaging the shroud. 2. Clear away any extra tape, bundling material or layers of foam (used to protect WeatherBoards Fiber Cement siding with ColorMax products) from the top of the pallet, leaving the sides enclosed to keep the siding in place. 3. Properly carry the siding to the desired location. Recommended carrying guidelines are illustrated to the right. Two people should pick up panel siding and carry from the center of the piece.
When youre finished accessing the pallet, re-cover it with the original shroud. If the shroud is damaged, repair it or use a new shroud. Cover with a tarp for extra protection. (Continued on the back)
Phase 4: Installation
Before you begin installation, review the CertainTeed WeatherBoards Fiber Cement Siding Installation Manual (FC017) and all applicable building codes in their entirety. The manual can be downloaded at www.certainteed.com. Refer to the WeatherBoards Fiber Cement Siding InstallationList below for a list of installation Dos and Donts. * When fiber cement is cut or drilled, it will create dust. This dust may contain crystalline silica, which can pose a health risk. To ensure adequate ventilation, work outdoors or use mechanical ventilation to reduce potential exposure to below OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs). If ventilation is not adequate to limit exposure, wear a NIOSH-approved disposable respirator (N95) or air purifying cartridge respirator filled with N (non-oil), P or R series filters.
