Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Thank you for attending tonight’s
induction of the new set of APPM
officers for 2009-2011.
It was the late Dr. Cesar Castillo
who introduced me and my wife
Myrna to the APPM. He was our at-
tending physician when we were resi-
dents at St. Agnes Hospital. He was very kind to us and treated us
as his colleagues and not as residents. We were initially hesitant to
join as we were busy with our residency and did not know anyone at
APPM at that time. As we got to meet the members of the organi-
zation thru the years we found out that this is a group of Filipino
doctors in Maryland who enjoyed each other’s company . These
were physicians who were dedicated to their profession and yet had
compassion for their countrymen or kababayans as we volunteered
for the annual medical mission during the Filipino festival at Tow-
son every year and other local medical missions. We have enjoyed
the annual continuing medical education lecture series and the an-
nual crab feasts held to entice younger Filipino physicians to join
the organization.
I would like to thank my predecessors for paving the way for me.
Dr. Pio Valle, immediate past president, Dr. Larry Yap for initiating
moves to invite younger physicians to join us. I would like to thank
Dr. Bienvenido Veneracion for working behind the scenes to ensure
a smooth transition of officers and Dr. Sergio Mateo for agreeing to
be president elect. I intend to continue to encourage younger physi-
cians to join us and keep their interest for the future of the organi-
zation belongs to them.
Our continued success is dependent upon participation and con-
tinued support from everyone in all APPM activities.

Dear colleagues and friends,
Welcome! It warms my heart to see
you come and witness another
changing of the guard in the
existence of the Association of Philippine Physicians in Mary-
land .Thank you all very much. It also gives me joy to know that
my term on the helm of the APPM is about to end, but I am hap-
pier that the future of APPM is secure for the near future knowing
that very capable people, in the persons of Dr. Renato Flores and
Dr. Sergio Mateo, are lined up to keep the torch burning for the
APPM, following a line of leadership that started in 1981.
I am not here to extol the accomplishments in the past two years.
It will suffice to say that in spite of all the recent dire economic
downturn and the all but dried up pharmaceutical company spon-
sorships, we were able to continue and present to the membership
the usual fare of educational and social activities that were widely
participated in, mostly at minimal or nominal cost, and at times,
at no cost to the members.
To all the incoming officers, I wish you all well. There is still
much left to do. With the current health reform debate going on,
there is a lot of uncertainty facing the medical profession that will
surely affect the APPM, making it all the more important for
you, and all of us, to be more vigilant and be proactive. May
your stints be fruitful and fulfilling.
Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the
people who helped me during my term. Many thanks!
