SCOPE

This design guide describes the procedure for line sizing of piping systems under any regime of flow: liquid, gas, or two-phase. This design guide supersedes DSG- !-"# and DSG- !-"$. %t re&ision ' date of this Design Guide, the legacy hydraulics program was being updated to (isual )asic. 2.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

The process engineer is responsible for sizing piping that appears on the piping and instrumentation diagrams *!+,Ds-. 3.0 PROCEDURE

The !rocess Technology.s hydraulics program is used for line sizing calculations. The instructions are outlined in the /,0 Software !ac1age 2ser3s anual, Section 4/.5, Size67esize 8ines 9ption. ,n addition, refer to Sections 4), ").:, and ;. 7efer to the following areas that interact with the line sizing procedure: Sections <.:, =).<, and >/. !ump head calculations and line summaries are interacti&e with line sizing. ,f the pro?ect does not use the /,0 concept for intelligent !+,Ds, the computer shall still be used to size lines. anual computations are not acceptable for firm designs, only as appro@imations or rough estimates. Data entry shall follow the order presented in the following entry screens: <. Two-!hase, 0@hibit < :. Gas #low, 0@hibit : 5. 8iquid #low, 0@hibit 5 4.0 INSTRUCTIONS anual. The /,0 2ser3s anual

#ollow the instructions in Section 4/.5 of the /,0 2ser3s is necessary for engineers using this design guide.

The pipe schedule is a common entry. ,f the piping group has issued a piping specification, the pipe schedule may be a&ailable and shall be input in the line sizing program. 9therwise the mechanical process engineer must ?udge wall thic1ness or pipe schedule by the flow conditions of pressure and temperature *see Table < for pipe dimensions by schedule-.

There is no equi&alent length calculation for the two-phase flow computer program. %s described in the /,0 2ser3s anual, the two-phase flow calculations are a point calculation. 2se the /,0 Software !ac1age3s single-phase flow computer program to calculate separately the equi&alent length for horizontal and &ertical pipes. Di&ide the pipe into segments so that the effect of change in fluid property, as the result of flashing, is negligible on pressure drop and flow regime calculations. /hec1 with the process engineer on the effect of downstream flashing. ,nput segment length into the /,0 Software !ac1age3s two-phase flow program. 7un the calculation for all segments, inputting the appropriate fluid properties and pipe equi&alent length. 4.2 Gas F !"# F ow
