INTRODUCTION Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio is: 1:18 Time of Instruction: 0 hrs Media: Group-paced Instruction

Motivator

The ability to operate the TWDS, the FAWPSS, the PWS/DS, and the SMFT is a necessary skill for the water treatment specialist when storing, distributing, and issuing potable water in a field environment.

Terminal Learning Objective

NOTE: Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements.
At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will: Action: Demonstrate proficiency on the TWDS and storage/distribution Conditions:

systems. Given prior classroom instruction, demonstration, a training site, POL, a Tactical Water Distribution System (TWDS), the Semitrailer Mounted Fabric Tank (SMFT), the Potable Water Storage/Distribution System (PWS/DS), the 125-GPM Gas/Diesel Driven Pump, the 350-GPM Diesel Water Pump, the 250-CFM Air Compressor, FM 10-52, FM 10-52-1, DA Form 1714-R, DA Form 1714-1-R, DA Form 2404, a GO/NO GO checklist, and a hands-on examination, TM 5-4320-226-14, TM 5-4310-452-14, TM 10-4320303-13, TM 5-4320-208-12&P, TM 5-4610-233-13&P, TM 5-4320303-14, TM 5-4320-309-14, and TM 5-4320-325-14. Proficiency will be determined by achieving a "GO" on this examination.

Standards:

Safety Requirements

1. Exercise extreme care and safety in handling the TWDS. Carelessness in handling the system could result in damage to the equipment and injury to personnel. 2. When handling equipment, always remove rings, bracelets, wrist watches, and any other jewelry prior to working with the system. Jewelry can catch on equipment and cause injury or may short circuit across electrical circuits and cause burns or electrical shock. 3. The exhaust system on the pump engine can become very hot during operations. Be careful not to touch it with bare hands. 4. The radiator also gets extremely hot during operations. Let it cool down before checking fluid. 5. To prevent injury, be careful not to short out the batteries on the pump. Do not smoke or use open flames near batteries or fuel tank.

6. To prevent air compressor assembly from rolling or sliding, securely lock the parking brakes. 7. Do not operate engine around open fuel. 8. Never refuel hot or running engines. Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. 9. Wear hearing protection when within 50 feet of operating air compressor. 10. The hypochlorination unit weighs over 200 pounds. At least four people are needed to lift it to prevent personal injury or damage to the equipment. 11. Hypochlorite solution is toxic to skin and eyes. If calcium hypochlorite comes into contact with skin or eyes, flush right away with water. Seek medical help. 12. Store calcium hypochlorite in a cool, dry place. Keep container closed. 13. Do not allow calcium hypochlorite to mix with any other materials, such as fuels, oils, paint products, or ammonia. This may cause fire or hazardous gases. Mix only in accordance with directions for use. 14. The hypochlorinator contains water under high pressure during and after operation. If this pressure is not relieved before working on the unit, serious injury may occur. 15. If hypochlorinator stops working properly or residual test does not give satisfactory reading, immediately shut down operation of distribution point, notify your supervisor, and take corrective action. 16. Portable radios will be required for communication and safe set-up. 17. Dry-cleaning solvent, P-D-680, used to clean parts is potentially dangerous to personnel and property. Avoid inhalation of fumes and repeated or prolonged skin exposure. Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water. Use in well-ventilated area away from open flame or excessive heat. Flash point is 100 degrees F (38 degrees C). 18. Never operate the centrifugal pump in an enclosed area unless the exhaust gases are piped to the outside. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide which is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas. 19. Make sure spark plug leads are disconnected before performing maintenance on the pump. 20. Avoid breathing smoke when using a fire extinguisher. 21. When operating 125-GPM pump or 350-GPM pump ensure fuel is stored a minimum of 50 feet from the pump. 22. Hearing protection must be worn by personnel standing within 50 feet of the operating pump.

Risk Assessment Level Environmental Considerations

Low - to medium.

Army Regulation 200-1 delineates TRADOC responsibilities to integrate environmental requirements across DTLOMS and ensure all training procedures, materials, and doctrine include sound environmental practices and considerations. The Army's environmental vision is to be a national leader in environmental and natural resource stewardship for present and future generations as an integral part of all Army missions. This Training Support Package meets this standard. Refer students to the Student Evaluation Plan. The ability to operate the TWDS and other water storage and distribution equipment is essential for the water treatment specialist in learning the techniques of producing potable water.

SUMMARY Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio is: 1:18 Time of Instruction: 0 hrs Media: Group-paced Instruction

Review / Summarize Lesson

The following key points were discussed within the lesson unit: a. Operating The TWDS And Storage/Distribution Systems

Check on Learning

Determine if the students have learned the material presented by soliciting student questions and explanations. Ask the students questions and correct misunderstandings.

SECTION V.

STUDENT EVALUATION NOTE: Describe how the student must demonstrate accomplishment of the TLO standard. Refer student to the Student Evaluation Plan.

Testing Requirements

The student must score a "GO" (100%) for each item on the "GO/NO GO" checklist on the End of Annex Exam. If the student receives a "NO GO" on any portion of the hands-on examination, the student is re-tested on only that portion, and if the student passes the re-test, a score of 70% is received. The student must achieve a passing score of 70% on the written examination. The hands-on and written examinations will be administered following a block of instruction and are located in the Instructor Test Package. Refer to the Course Management Plan/Program of Instruction (CMP/POI) for guidance on administering the test. NOTE: Rapid, immediate feedback is essential to effective learning. Schedule and provide feedback on the evaluation and any information to help answer students' questions about the test. Provide remedial training as needed.
