We at Nativity are the Body of
Christ, bearing many gifts to the
world. Our people are our gifts,
with all their many skills and talents. This month at
Nativity, our focus is on the gift of leadership, with two
important events: Wayne Whitneys ordination as a
priest on Jan. 18, and our annual meeting on Jan. 26.
I know how excited we all are to see Wayne ordained as
a priest. He has been with Nativity for four years now,
and he is beloved by our parish. I am very pleased to
have a new priestly colleague to share ministry with. I
hope you will all come to the ordination service. An
Episcopal ordination is a holy and awe-inspiring
experience!
In a sense, though, an ordination is like a wedding. A lot
of energy goes into the ceremony, but the real
significance of it is what happens afterwards a lifetime
of love in the case of a wedding, or service in the case of
an ordination. Priests in the Episcopal Church are given
the ministry of sacramental leadership (consecrating,
absolving, and blessing), of teaching and preaching, and
of leadership within the parish. We have all watched
Wayne grow in the latter two areas during the time he has
been with us. As a sacramental leader, I know that
Waynes gifts will shine brightly for Nativity, too. I look
forward to the moment when I, with the bishop and other
priests, lay hands on him to make him a priest in Gods
church.
At our annual meeting, the focus will be on a different kind
of leadership, the vital and essential ministry of lay
leadership. We will be thanking the leaders who have put so
much dedication into Nativity over the past few years: our
outgoing senior warden, Jeff Jameson, and junior warden,
Bill Deihl, and outgoing vestry members Nancy Bleasdale,
Claire Smith, David Smith, and Jane Heist. (Note: Jane is
running for re-election, as she has served only a one-year
term.) It has been a privilege to serve with and be inspired
by these folks, and I am deeply grateful.
We also will be appointing and electing new vestry leaders
at the annual meeting. I am delighted that David Bolger has
accepted my appointment as our new senior warden. David
comes with a very strong background in nonprofit
management and strategic planning just the skills needed
for Nativity to move to the next level. I am very excited
about having David on our leadership team. Our candidates
for election are Mark Miller for junior warden, and Suzanne
Cohen, Jennie Dobbins, Cotty Peabody, and Jane Heist for
vestry (Jane for a one-year term). What a strong group of
nominees they are! You can find out more about them on
pages 6-7. Let me just say how pleased I am with this new
class of vestry members, and how much I look forward to
moving forward with them.
Together, we are the Body of Christ. Our many gifts and
talents make it possible for us to pursue Gods mission in
this place. Thanks be to God!
In Christ,
Susan

Transforming lives with the love of God in Jesus Christ
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed
in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then
gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:27-28
Power Bible Study
What stories about Jesus do you remember the most? The Gospel of Matthew records several stories about Jesus that other
Gospel writers don't mention: the visit of the wise men, the slaughter of the innocents, the Sermon on the Mount and its
radical teaching about the Christian life, the judgment at the end of time based on how we have treated the least of these.
Learn about Matthews unique perspective and what it means for us! Come join Pastor Susan and Dr. Wayne for Power Bible
Study for Epiphanytide in the Music Room on Sunday mornings from 10:45 to 11:35.
Wednesday Evening Prayer
Wednesday Evening Prayer is more musical than ever! We are singing some of our old favorite prayers like the Our Father
and the Magnificat along with new favorites the Nunc Dimittis and Phos Hilaron. This service meets in the Prayer Chapel
every Wednesday from 6:00-6:30 p.m. and always features special prayers for healing. Make mid-week corporate prayer a
part of your spiritual well-being program.

When I departed ordained ministry at
Bethany Baptist Church in Godfrey,
Illinois in the Fall of 1992 I was quite
sure I would never look back. Finding
myself in Colorado living at my father-
in-law's place with little to go on except
a 4-month severance check, a pile of
diplomas, and a self-righteous feeling of
being shafted, I couldn't stay away from
church for even one Sunday. I found a
wonderful place to worship that was
only a couple of blocks away that met the one requirement I
had in a church, that it be as different from my boyhood
Baptist tradition as possible, and still be Protestant. Little
did I know walking in that the Episcopal Church is this
lovely mixture of all that is good about God's Church on
earth. The thought of entering the ordained ministry in a
new tradition only created nausea and shuddering; but God's
hand kept guiding me toward leadership over and over and
over again, first by teaching the adult forum and eventually
leading the youth program at Christ's Episcopal Church in
Castle Rock, Colorado.
I have grown more and more comfortable with ill-feelings
and bodily reactions to happenings as portals for God's
grace to slip in. On the eve of my being ordained a priest in
God's One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church I am
present to a God who loves and loves and loves. My
experience of this love has me clinging to promises which
for me never got fully realized. I was a bitter young man
when I left the ministry 21 years ago; but I rest now in a
promise God is actively fulfilling through Church of the
Nativity: "I will restore the years the locust has eaten" (Joel
2:25). Thanks be to God because His mercy truly endures
forever.
Pax et Lux,

Dr. Wayne
"C" is for Christianity
Epiphany Season is our time to see more and more of the light that Christ is making shine in the world. It coincides nicely
with our gradual lengthening of days from the shortest days in the deeps of Winter as we march toward the longer days of
Spring and Summer. Our learning and experiencing of God finds its expression in this lengthening of days. The ABCDs of
Our Faith continues with "C" is for Christianity starting Wednesday, January 8 for 7 weeks and concluding February 19.
Topics to be covered are things like The Trinity, Sin, Salvation and the End Times. All questions are welcome in these
sessions that go from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Registration is open to anyone who was not registered in the 1st Semester. If you were a
registered participant of Modules A or B then you are already registered for Module C. Cost is $25 and payable at the first
class meeting. We gather for a pitch-in salad bar supper in the kitchen at 6:30 and the teaching starts as soon as everybody is
seated at the table. More details on what to bring for this are forthcoming once you fill out the registration form. Please see
Dr. Wayne for any questions, or email waynewhitney@thenativity.net.

A NOTE FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR 5
2013 was a very exciting year for
the music ministry. First of all, we
performed many important services: the
dedication service of our new building
in January; Holy Week services in
March, with a special offering by the
choir presenting a selection from
Stainer's "Crucifixion" on Good Friday;
glorious Easter services in April; an
organ fundraiser concert for the St.
Augustine's Episcopal Church in May; Bach Sunday in
October; and Christmas celebrations in December. We
also put together quite a few concerts in the Nativity
Music Series, which helped raise funds for the brand new
grand piano for our church! We heard our fabulous
mezzosoprano Suzanne Rovani in April; very young and
extremely talented jazz group led by Chris Light in May;
our choir and a group of musicians in a very well attended
Veteran's Day program in November; annual Christmas
choir concert in December. Thanks to all involved and
generous donors we purchased a high-end concert size
Kawai grand piano. It sounds fantastic in our new space,
as well as in a variety of styles that we have been
presenting: classical, gospel, jazz and contemporary. It
serves us well as a solo instrument (you can hear me
playing classical solos at the 8 a.m. service every Sunday,
and at both services throughout the summer months), as
well as in ensemble settings with classical, gospel and jazz
music.
We are very fortunate to have received a
wonderful donation from our parishioners: a professional
piano cover with the unique Nativity embroidery! It will
protect the instrument not only from the dust, but also the
heat and most importantly direct sunlight. In 2014 we
need to install a professional humidifier system
underneath the piano (not visible from the outside) to
extend the life of the instrument and save money on
tuning. If you were interested in partaking in this project,
please talk to me in between the services, or write an
email to ilonakubiaczyk-adler@thenativity.net.
2014 is going to be even more exciting! On
January 18th we will celebrate Wayne Whitney's
ordination service. We will have guest musicians and our
choir in an eclectic program of traditional hymns, classical
music, gospel anthems and contemporary songs. The choir
is working hard on their pieces, and we are glad we are a
part of this unforgettable event!
Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 23rd at
4 p.m.! Two wonderful musicians: Levon Zarasian, who
plays in the Phoenix Symphony violin section, and a
pianist Peter Gharibian, will perform music by
Kreisler, Mozart, Beethoven, and Sarasate. This is going
to be a real treat, so don't forget to bring all your music
loving friends!

DAVID J. BOLGER: Appointed as our new Senior Warden
I am a native of Mount Vernon, Texas, a graduate of The University of Texas, and was at one
time the youngest mayor in Texas. My business experience over the past years has focused on
private, governmental and non-profit sector management. I am currently President of Corporate//
Education Consulting, Inc. Our firm works with corporate clients and associations on strategic
planning, communications, and media and government relations. My civic involvement includes
leadership of Arizona Opera, Young Arts Arizona, and a variety of initiatives for The University
of Texas, including the Chancellors Council and the College of Education Foundation Council.
My wife, Mary Lynn, and I moved to Arizona in 1970. We are so fortunate to have our daughter
(an actual Arizona native), son-in-law, and grandson living 10 minutes away from us.
I am profoundly thankful that I found Church of the Nativity or Nativity found me!
The best way I know to pay back for this blessing is to give back by serving our church and our
church family to the best of my ability as your Senior Warden. I believe wholeheartedly in
Nativitys Mission transforming lives through the Love of Jesus Christ in no small part
because it has had that effect on my own life. It will be my honor to work to support our efforts to live this Mission to the
fullest. Together congregation, clergy and staff we will continue to do great things for our church and our community for
the greater good and to the glory of the Lord. I am blessed to be able to play a small part in the beautiful composition that is
Church of the Nativity.
SUZANNE COHEN: Nominee for Three-Year Vestry Term
Being raised Episcopalian, I went to church every Sunday, was an acolyte, part of the youth group ,
and was even in the choir (I am actually tone deaf so you wont see me in choir robes here- I
promise). The church was a large part of my formative years. When I joined Nativity, almost 2 years
ago I joined for my young son. As a single mother it is important to me to have the support from a
community that encourages and supports not just faith but family (no matter what that family looks
like). I was looking for a place for my son to grow. I found that, but I also found much more. Being
a member at Nativity has strengthened my relationship with God.
As the Hospitality and blood drive chair for the past year I have tried to give back to the Nativity
community. Being on the vestry would allow me the opportunity to give back even more. Some of
Nativitys strengths are its acceptance, diversity as well as the dedication to helping others. As a
member of the vestry I would hope to continue to support these attributes, encourage our community
to invest in each other as well as to those in need. I thank you for the opportunity to serve.
MARK MILLER: Candidate for Junior Warden
Ive been a lifelong Episcopalian. My wife is Mary Dexter and my daughter is Martha Miller.
You probably have seen us all in the choir. Weve been members of Nativity since shortly
after we moved here from Oakland, California in 2009. During our church shopping we
came to Nativity and decided this is the place for us. We loved the warmth of the people and
Susans ministry. Prior to coming here we were at St. Johns Oakland for 13 years. During
that time I was on the vestry twice and was junior warden once. I also managed the technical
infrastructure (computer systems, network, and phone system) from 2003 until we left in
2009. At our church prior to St. Johns I was on the vestry and later served as the treasurer.
At Nativity Im currently a member of the choir, teach upper elementary Sunday school, and
manage the computer network and HVAC system. I am very enthusiastic about Nativitys
future and want to be a part of helping it to grow and provide the opportunity for more lives to
be transformed.

I have worked for APL (American President Lines) since 1984 in many different Information technology positions. My
entire career has been in information technology. Ive also worked for the University of Oklahoma, Visa, and Gap in various
technology and management positions.

JENNIE DOBBINS: Nominee for Three-Year Vestry Term
The path to Nativity has been a long, wonderful one for our family. It led us
through Episcopal parishes in Mississippi, Kentucky, Indiana, Rhode Island,
Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia where I found great pleasure in serving
on Worship Committees, Altar Guilds, Womens Groups, Vestries, teaching
Sunday school , Outreach and as Lay Reader and Server. Nothing has, however,
given me a greater sense of purpose than being a part of the startup and growth of
Nativity.
The desire to warmly welcome each person without regard to where he might be
in his spiritual journey and to encourage, strengthen and to offer a place for him
to carry out the mission of changing lives through the love of Jesus is the
cornerstone of our success. As our numbers increase, it is more difficult to
identity and welcome the newest among us but it is no less important. I am
grateful for a place of worship where all are welcome, for the Nativity family and
the friendship and love to be found here. It is my hope to be instrumental in
seeking the right path to maintain our open hand of friendship and open heats
while we expand our reach.

ENDICOTT "COTTY" PEABODY: CANDIDATE FOR THREE-YEAR VESTRY TERM
Cotty was born and raised in the Boston area and was educated at Groton School
and Harvard College. Following college, he lived and worked in Denver as a
banker for 10 years before returning to New York as an officer at Wells Fargo
and Marine Midland Banks. In 1981, he married Andrea Lamp and they moved
back to the Boston area where he worked for John Hancock until his
retirement. They have one child, Elizabeth "Biz" Peabody, age 21, a junior at
USC. Cotty has a son from a previous marriage, Endicott "Kit" Peabody, 38 a
lawyer in Boston. They have 2 grandchildren ages 3 and 1 living in Boston.
Cotty and Andrea have owned a home in Arizona for 21 years but did not
become AZ residents until 2011.
While living in the Boston area, Cotty and Andrea were members of the Church
of the Redeemer in Brookline for almost 30 years. There Cotty served on the
vestry twice and also was Stewardship chair for 2 years. He, Andrea and Biz
were part of the Redeemer Mission team to work in New Orleans following the
Katrina disaster and Cotty returned the next 2 years leading a team of high
school students from the Redeemer to continue the relief work.
Cotty and Andrea joined Nativity over 2 years ago when they moved here permanently. They have joined the
parish on a mission trip to NavajoLand, participated in serving lunch at the Phoenix Men's Homeless Shelter and
recently, Cotty and Andrea have agreed to fill the huge shoes left by Marty and Bob Christopher in organizing
the Nativity's activities at Habitat for Humanity. Cotty and Andrea's hope for Nativity is for it to continue to
grow and prosper within our community, encouraging and welcoming new parish members as well as fulfilling
our commitment to outreach and service.

JANE HEIST: NOMINEE FOR ONE-YEAR VESTRY TERM
I converted to the Episcopal Church when I was in high school in Colorado. As with
each of you, it was a blessing to be led to Nativity where we enjoy a church family. In
an effort to help support the needs of our church, I have served on the finance
committee for the past two years and the Vestry for one. God has continued to bless us
and many newcomers in our new building. It is important to allocate our resources to
reach out to as many more new people as possible. My hope is that all of the ministries
will flourish, leading to the ability and necessity for the building expansion in the next
few years.
Outside of Nativity, I occupy my time with my CPA and portfolio management practices, playing duplicate
bridge and hiking.
Kris Haugen- Nominee for Two-Year Vestry Term
I have been an Episcopalian since my parents converted in 1995 and
actively since 2005, teaching Sunday school since then in 2 different
parishes in Arizona. I grew up in SD and have lived in the Southwest
for most of my adult life. I am a mother of 2 wonderfully active boys,
Jake and Nate and have enjoyed a 17 year career with Marriott
International, currently leading 15 Global Accounts. I am passionate
about children's education (in school and church), nutritional cooking,
and training for my first half marathon.

We joined Church of Nativity in 2007 as I believed this church has the
foundations and "roots" of providing my family a traditional religious
environment yet equally focusing on the needs of young and growing
families. As a Vestry member, I am committed to providing leadership
and a strong voice of the children and Youth Leadership that supports
that passion. Our church is quickly growing to an unchartered,
exciting place. I look forward to the opportunity supporting this
growth and would be honored to serve in this capacity.

A Very Merry Christmas,
Indeed!
Many thanks to everyone who participated in the
Angel Tree project this year. Because of
Nativitys generosity, we were able to give gifts
to 2 single adults, 72 kids and 14 families. It was
obvious that members had big hearts when
choosing the perfect gifts, you made sure that
everyone will have more than one present to open
and that there will be plenty of smiling faces on
Christmas morning. Thank you Nativity, youve
made Santa Claus proud!

URGENT---OUR SOLDIERS NEED OUR HELP
The mission for U.S. Troops in Afghanistan is ending next December. Because
of the draw down of troops, the commissaries and REC centers are already
shutting down. Soldiers used to receive 3 hot meals per day, now they are
getting MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). These backup field food packets have
become their staple diet. Even basics, like socks, are rationed to two pairs a
month. Our soldiers are in desperate need for basic suppliesnow more than
ever.
This has forced Packages from Home to change their holiday boxes. At Christmas
time they used to send extras, like Christmas lights and ornaments, but now they
have cut the fluff and only are sending what the soldiers need to survive.
PfH has sent out an urgent request and we hope that Nativity members will answer the
call. From this Sunday until Feb. 14th we will be collecting donations and specific items
for immediate shipment to our soldiers overseas.

Snacks for Sunday School
We have been quite successful in offering healthier snacks for the children in Sunday School with parents contributions! I'd
like to continue that in the new year so I'm asking parents to please pick a week and sign up to bring snack for the children's
Sunday School by emailing shelleybyrnes@thenativity.net.
The Snack calendar is:
Thank you all to everyone who
made the first two portions of the
Christmas pageant so successful!
The speaking cast worked very hard
memorizing lines and attending
rehearsals. We could not have done
it without the support from families
who helped with lines and drove our
actors to and from rehearsals during
an already very hectic time! Thank
you also to Jason Francis, who ran
the technical portion of our
pageant. And, of course, great
thanks go out to Darrell Spencer
who, as Director, used his gifts and
skill to coax and coach the best
performances out of our children!
