N.B. William Trost Richards began working in watercolors by 1860 and frequently worked in that medium throughout the
1860s and 70s, at which time watercolor as a medium was experiencing a revival in American art. During this period,
Richards also began to shift his subject matter away from highly detailed landscapes (often done in oil) that reflected the
influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and John Ruskin, toward marine and coastal views. “Richards’s intensive work in
watercolor coincided with a new stylistic direction for the artist and an emerging fascination with shoreline subjects that he
would indulge regularly for the rest of his career.”1 He traveled throughout the northeast, studying the crashing surf of the
coastal waters. In 1874, Richards bought a home in Newport and frequently painted the surrounding waters of
Narragansett Bay. “Watercolor proved an ideal medium for expressing his preoccupation with surf and the moist, hazy
atmosphere of the summer shore.”2 Although he did not totally abandon the highly detailed and technically precise
renderings of his environment seen in his earlier landscape compositions, the medium of watercolor lent “a broad, airy
quality” to his work.3

Provenance: The collection of John A. Faul, San Francisco, then by descent to the current owner.
N.B. Thomas Hill moved with his family from England to Taunton, Massachusetts, at the age of fifteen.
By 1847, Hill was in Boston, where he started his painting career before going on to study at the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1853. For the rest of the decade, he continued to paint images of
New England scenery, in particular New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Hill first traveled to San Francisco
in 1861 and made his first trip to Yosemite a year later. However, his career brought him to Paris in 1967,
where his studied and exhibited at the Paris Universal Exposition (1867). Before returning to California,
where he ultimately settled, Hill stopped again in Boston from 1867 until 1871. The work presented here
most likely dates from that period.

Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (Anglo/American, 1819-1905)
N.B. Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait was born in Liverpool, but as a child moved to the English countryside near
Lancaster where he first became interested in nature, animals, hunting, and fishing. By the 1840s Tait
relocated to Manchester where he worked at Agnew’s Repository for the Arts, and discovered the work of
Edwin Landseer and John Frederick Herring. Herring’s use of color, in particular, inspired the young artist.
In 1850, Tait, after viewing an exhibition of George Catlin’s paintings of the American West, decided to
move to America. He settled in New York, where he painted views of the surrounding Adirondacks. He
purchased a farm in Westchester County, which offered the opportunity to paint animals in their natural
environment. Tait is best known for these realistic, narrative scenes, often featuring animals and huntsmen,
using rich natural colors.

Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951)
N.B. A member of “The Ten” and one of the leading American Impressionist artists, Frank
Benson worked in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, and etching, and produced
portraits, landscapes, sporting scenes, and still lifes. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Benson first
studied at Boston’s Museum School before traveling to Paris, where he enrolled at the Academie
Julian. After returning to the U.S. in 1885, he taught at Boston’s Museum School and enjoyed a
successful career, gaining membership to the Society of American Artists and winning many
awards, including the Hallgarten Prize at the National Academy in New York. At this time Benson
was best known for his graceful plein-air oil portraits which incorporated elements of French
Impressionism. However, as American artistic tastes began to change in the 1910s Benson’s focus
began to shift too, towards landscapes and sporting subjects. Always an avid outdoorsman, it was
at this time that he began depicting views of New England and Canada, and abandoned oil paint
in favor of watercolors and etchings.

N.B. Anthony Thieme, best known for his Impressionistic plein-air coastal views and seascapes,
was born in Rotterdam, Holland, but came to the U.S. as a young artist, setting up a studio in
Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Although Thieme was attracted to the colorful surroundings and
sparkling waters of Rockport and Gloucester, he continued to travel throughout his career. He
spent the winter months in St. Augustine, Florida (where he set up a studio in 1947) but also
traveled to Mexico, Guatemala, and the Bahamas. He was “seeking new challenges to capture on
canvas”1 and his paintings reflected the warm sunlight, vibrant colors, rich textures, and varied
cultures of these places.

Literature: Gillon Jr., Edmund V., Beardsley’s Illustrations for La Morte Darthur (New York; Dover Publications, Inc., 1972) pp. 80,
154; Malory, Sir Thomas, The Birth, Life, and Acts of King Arthur, of His Noble Knights of the Round Table, Their Marvelous Enquests
and Adventures, The Achieving of the San Greal, and in the End, Le Morte Darthur with the Dolourous Death and Departing Out of This
World of Them All, (London: J.M. Dent, 1893-1894).
N.B. London publisher J.M. Dent approached Aubrey Beardsley in 1892 to illustrate an edition of Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte
Darthur. Beardsley, at age 20, was an unknown insurance office clerk. Dent first came across his work through photographer Frederick
H. Evans, who owned the book shop Jones & Evans, frequented by Beardsley. Beardsley was paid 250 pounds for his work for Le Morte
Darthur, which would be issued in twelve separate parts, and he produced a total of approximately 585 illustrations for the book. A
very productive period for Beardsley, during this time he also was working on his illustrations for Salomé and The Yellow Book. Le Morte
Darthur is not only “a superb example of the illustrated book, but it is also the work that launched the ‘Beardsley look’ which was to
change the appearance of the fin de siècle and influence succeeding generations...”1

57, (illus.). Mexico in the 1930s, and is believed by her family to have
acquired art on this trip, including the present work.
N.B. In Emily Braun’s analysis of the landscape composition of $8,000-12,000
the present work, she notes that the two figures depicted in the
foreground may allude to the twin sons of Zeus Castro and
Polydeuces—also known as the Dioscuri—but may also represent
the artist and his brother, Alberto Savinio.1 Supporting this
interpretation, Braun cites the depiction of eyes in the lower left,
which commonly represented for De Chirico “the visionary
powers of the artist” or “the omnipotence of the gods.”2 Of the
portrait composition on the reverse, Braun contextualizes the
work within the Parisian surrealist circle of Paul Eluard, Gala
Dali’s first husband. She notes that Eluard was a patron of De
Chirico circa 1923, and that De Chirico associated with the
couple through 1926.3

The work was one of eight original drawings included in a presentation copy of Souvenirs d’un marchand de tableaux by Ambroise
Vollard, published by Éditions Albin Michel in 1937, which was pen inscribed and gifted to his chauffeur Marcel Z. Méraud.
In a letter at the Archive Matisse dated February 16, 1942, Méraud shares his enthusiasm for the gift from Vollard, and requests a work
from Matisse to add to the book. He writes: “Mr. Fabiani had to tell you about the book that Mr. Ambroise Vollard dedicated to me;
among other things, it is the first book out of the printing press that Mr. Vollard gave to me, saying, “Marcel, the first is for you!”
Within this book are [works by] Mr. Vollard’s art colleagues and friends-one made me a drawing, another a watercolor, another a
drawing with watercolor, etc. … Would you allow me to ask a remembrance of you? I would be very grateful.” (translated from French)
In a second letter, also at the Archive Matisse dated September 23, 1942, Méraud acknowledges receipt of a drawing and expresses his
pleasure with the work: “I received your magnificent drawing that I quickly put it in my book of the recollections of Mr. Ambroise
Vollard, which is for me, the best souvenir, with the nice dedication of Mr. Vollard and fine drawings by artists that I had the pleasure of
seeing regularly without knowing more intimately, I thank you even more, because your beautiful gesture allows me to enrich my book
with a beautiful memory of a great master.” (translated from French)

2. All property is sold “as is,” and neither the auctioneer nor any consignor makes any warranties or representation of any kind or nature with
respect to the property, and in no event shall they be responsible for the correctness, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty, of
description, genuineness, authorship, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, or condition of the property and no statement made
at the sale, or in the bill of sale, or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty of representation or an assumption of liability.
3. Except as provided in paragraph 1 above, the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the case of a disputed
bid, the auctioneer shall have sole discretion in determining the purchaser and may also, at his or her election, withdraw the lot or reoffer the lot
for sale.
4. All merchandise purchased must be paid for and removed from the premises the day of the auction. Skinner, Inc. may impose, and the
purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly storage charge of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or portion of a lot not removed by the purchaser within
three (3) business days after the date of sale. Skinner, Inc. shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises for more than
three (3) days after the date of sale. At the option of Skinner, Inc., the merchandise may be transferred to and stored at a bonded warehouse and
the purchaser agrees to pay all transfer and storage expenses. Skinner, Inc. may impose, and the purchaser agrees to pay, a monthly interest charge
of 1.5% of the purchase price of any lot or item not paid by the purchaser within thirty-five (35) days of the date of sale.
5. Skinner accepts cash or check for payment. Personal checks will be acceptable only if credit has been established with Skinner, Inc. or if a bank
authorization has been received guaranteeing a personal check. Skinner, Inc. reserves the right to hold merchandise purchased by personal check
until the check has cleared the bank. The purchaser agrees to pay Skinner, Inc. a handling charge of $25.00 for any check dishonored by the
drawee. Please contact Accounting for additional payment methods. Skinner does not accept payment by credit card for merchandise purchases.
6. If the purchaser breaches any of its obligations under these Conditions of Sale, including its obligation to pay in full the purchase price of all
items for which it was the highest successful bidder, Skinner, Inc. may exercise all of its rights and remedies under the law including, without
limitation, (a) cancelling the sale and applying any payments made by the purchaser to the damages caused by the purchaser’s breach, and/or (b)
offering at public auction, without reserve, any lot or item for which the purchaser has failed to pay in full the purchase price, holding the
purchaser liable for any deficiency plus all costs of sale.
7. In no event will the liability of Skinner, Inc. to any purchaser with respect to any item exceed the purchase price actually paid by such
purchaser for such item.
8. Shipping is the responsibility of the purchaser. Upon request, our staff will provide the list of shippers who deliver to destinations within the
United States and overseas. Some property that is sold at auction can be subject to laws governing export from the U.S., such as items that
include material from some endangered species. Import restrictions from foreign countries are subject to these same governing laws. Granting of
licensing for import or export of goods from local authorities is the sole responsibility of the buyer. Denial or delay of licensing will not constitute
cancellation or delay in payment for the total purchase price of these lots.
9. All purchases are subject to the Massachusetts 6.25% sales tax unless the purchaser possesses a Massachusetts sales tax exemption number.
Exemption numbers from other states are accepted in Massachusetts if presented with a business card or letterhead. Dealers, museums, and other

of the final bid over $200,000.
11. Bidding on any item indicates your acceptance of these terms and all other terms announced at the time of sale whether bidding in person,
through a representative, by phone, by Internet, or other absentee bid.
12. Skinner, Inc. and its consignors make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or
reproduction rights to any lot sold. Skinner, Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in this catalogue. The
copyright in all images, illustrations and written material produced by or for Skinner, Inc. relating to a lot, including the contents of this

choice of law). The buyer/bidder agrees that any suit for the enforcement of this agreement may be brought, and any action against Skinner in
connection with the transactions contemplated by this agreement shall be brought, in the courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or any
