The Money And Shut Up

On December 2nd some debris from the launch of the rst Chinese moon rover (a small vehicle that will move about on the moons surface) landed in a rural village and damaged a home and a barn. The government promptly paid $2,635 in compensation. This was considered a pretty good response by the government, which tends to take what it wants and ignore citizen complaints. This wass not an isolated incident. The area in Hunan province where the rocket debris fell is a thousand kilometers from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center and the area has been hit by debris on at least twenty occasions. Often the debris lands where it does little damage, or is not even found for a while. That was the case in 2010 when China launched its second moon probe, in preparation for a manned mission, and several large pieces of the rocket (discarded as the rst stage separated) fell to earth and landed harmlessly but spectacularly on farmland. This incident made it into the news, something the Chinese government seeks to avoid. Debris falling back to earth after the launch of a large, multi-stage rocket is normal. The Chinese are aware of the problem but built their Xichang Satellite Launch Center far inland anyway. American and most other launch centers are on the coast for missions like this so that when the rockets take off the debris comes down over open water. In addition, warnings are issued to mariners in the region, telling them to stay clear of areas where debris is expected to come down. But China is a communist police state, and paranoia is paramount. Best to build launch facilities far from the coast and the prying eyes (of telescopes) and ears (antennae pickup up transmissions) of the enemy (usually a long list.) Dead farmers are acceptable collateral damage, although to prevent unrest compensation is paid and paid quickly. In the Chinese countryside the farmers tend to live in compact villages. This is good most of the time when it comes to falling rocket debris. Most of the countryside is farmland, mountains or pasture. But when launches go wrong and the rocket has to be destroyed in the air a lot more stuff comes down. For example, in 1996, a rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center went off course, exploded and sent lots of debris to the ground. Some of it hit a village and caused over fty casualties. The ofcial death toll was six but information leaking out of the area indicated that dozens were killed and many more injured. There were rumors of other similar incidents since then but China exerts a lot of effort to keep details of space operations, especially accidents, secret. Just to be on the safe side, each reported incident is quickly investigated and (usually) adequate compensation promptly paid. But with the proliferation of cell phones and the Internet into rural areas, cell phone photos increasingly get out before the government censors can step in. Russia has had similar problems at their Soviet era Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan. Even farther inland than Xichang, Baikonur is surrounded by far more thinly populated areas. The Kazakhs complain about the threat of accidents, but nearly all the people killed during bad launches were people working at Baikonur, not outside the launch complex. Despite the occasional large-scale casualties China has continues to play the odds with the lives of people living under the eastward ight path of these launches. Or, as communists like to put it; the deaths are all for the greater good so take the money and shut up. Mirko Gargiulo (Editor-in Chief)

Elbit Establishes New Intel Division

Elbit Systems, Israels fastest growing defense firm, has established an intelligence division tasked with vectoring electro-optics, information technology (IT), cyber and other relevant product lines to the benefit of the wider corporate portfolio. The new division Intelligence and Electro-Optics Elop will be managed by Adi Dar, managing director of Elop Ltd., a subsidiary of the Haifa-based parent company based in Rehovot. In a Nov. 18 letter to Elbits 12,000-some employees, President and CEO Bezhalel Butzi Machlis said the new division is part of a recent corporate roadmap that identified the intelligence sector as a future growth engine. We decided to develop this field in a cross-corporate manner that will allow us to vector existing capabilities into force multipliers for future growth, Machlis wrote. The new division will consolidate the intelligence and observation capabilities already in Elop together with the IT, intelligence and cyber activities now managed by Elbits Systems Land and C4I Division. In a Dec. 3 interview, Machlis said the new division would support all divisions and product lines, including unmanned systems, electronic warfare and signals intelligence - Elisra And Land and C4I . Additionally, Elbit is establishing an
TNM 8

intra-divisional unit aimed at vectoring ongoing independent research and development (IR&D) across all corporate sectors. Headed by Asaf Ashkenazi, Elbit Systems vice president, the new unit will support sector-specific IR&D activities that will continue to be managed by the relevant divisions. Weve adopted a new model for more comprehensive, corporate-wide benefit of our IR&D activities. It wont replace our specialty focus, but rather vector it for the collective good, Machlis told Defense News. He also said that Elbit will leverage the firms existing defense capabilities for civilian and commercial markets. Potential dual-use markets eyed by the firm include avionics and technologies associated with energy and medical sectors. Elbit traditionally reinvests some 9 percent of annual revenue in IR&D. In 2012, the firm posted $168 million in net profit based on $2.9 billion in sales, with a backlog of $5.7 billion. Last June, the company established in cooperation with Israels Chief Scientist Office a technology incubator tasked with identifying areas for investment. Chaired by longtime Elbit executive Haim Rousso, former managing director of Elop, the new Incubit Technology Ventures is located in the governments new technology park in Beersheba. S. Korea Sells 24 Light Attack Jets to Iraq

South Korea has signed a deal to export 24 light fighter jets to Iraq for $1.1 billion, Seouls largest arms sale in history. Under the deal, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) will deliver 24 FA-50 jets to the Iraqi Air Force between 2015 and 2016. The FA50 is a light attack variant of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer aircraft jointly built by Lockheed Martin. The Iraq export version is named the T-50IQ. The FA-50 beat the Hawk-128 by BAE Systems, the Yak-130 by Yakovlev of Russia and the L-159 by Aero Vodochody of the Czech Republic. The deal with Iraq will pave the way for exporting more T-50 aircraft to the Middle East following Asia, Europe and South America, a KAI spokesman said. The T-50, which can be used both as a trainer jet or light attack aircraft, is becoming popular in the global aircraft market, as many countries are pushing for purchasing new jets to replace their low-class jets, he said. KAI previously exported 16 FA-50 aircraft to Indonesia and is seeking deals with the Philippines, Botswana the United Arab Emirates and Chile. The FA-50 is armed with air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles and machine guns, as well as precision-guided bombs, such as joint directattack munitions and sensor-fused weapons. Fitted with Israels Elta Systems EL/M-2032 Pulse Doppler radar with a detection range of 100 kilometers, the aircraft is suitable for closeair support missions. In addition to the aircraft deal, KAI is scheduled to sign a $1 billion contract to provide T-50 logistics and training support to Iraq for the next 25 years, which will push the total value of the Iraq deal to $2.1 billion, according to KAI. South Koreas aerospace industry has shown its competitiveness in the world market and its export potential, KAI Chairman Ha Sung-yong told reporters after a signing ceremony in Baghdad Dec. 12. We will make every effort to help the Iraqi Air Force operate the T-50IQ without difficulties. Iraqs T-50 order comes as the Middle East nation is buying 36 F-16 fighter jets to help rebuild its air power. This deal will improve the performance of the Ministries of Defense and Interior in defending the country and in fighting terrorism, the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said in a statement. Finmeccanica Names New COO

Italian defense group Finmeccanica has appointed a new chief operating officer (COO) to work with CEO Alessandro Pansa, the firm said Dec. 11. Sergio De Luca, who will take over the role Jan. 1, has previously served as CEO of Ansaldo STS, the railway signalling firm controlled by Finmeccanica. Hitherto, Pansa has covered both the CEO and COO roles at Finmeccanica since his appointment in February following the arrest on suspicion of corruption of previous CEO Giuseppe Orsi. Prior to Orsis arrest, Pansa had been COO at the firm. In its statement, Finmeccanica said the changes were part of the process of implementing new corporate governance guidelines aimed at strengthening the governance structure of the Group. De Luca, 63, joined Ansaldo in 1975 and has been CEO of Ansaldo STS since 2007. Orsis trial, connected to alleged corruption in the sale of helicopters to India, is underway. Finmeccanica came late to the business of restructuring, but managers say they hope they have now done enough to cut personnel in order to survive the downturn. Asked on Dec. 10 about the EADS job cuts, Pansa said: Every one has their strategy - we have also cut our personnel. In April, the firm announced cuts of 2,500 at its Selex ES electronics unit, which had until then employed 17,000 at facilities in Italy and the UK. Some 500 of the cuts were to be made in the UK, amounting to 10 percent of its UK workforce. In Italy, Finmeccanica unit Alenia Aeronautica was working to reduce its workforce in 2011 through early pensions. The 150 firms signed up to Italys aerospace and defense industry association AIAD employ 52,000 staff, although smaller suppliers and indirect employment takes the total to 200,000, said AIAD general secretary Carlo Festucci. Turnover stands at 14.5 billion. Its almost impossible to say what that number will be in five years because it depends on European integration and new programs, he said. But I do not expect it to rise. (By Tom Kington)

France Trims $91.4M From Defense Budget

Frances lower house National Assembly adopted Dec. 13 a last minute amendment to trim 66.4 million (US $91.4 million) from the 2014 defense budget, member of parliament Franois Cornut-Gentille said. Under the measure, equipment spending falls 11.5 million and 36.8 million from maintenance and support of equipment and property. The amendment was tabled Friday morning for a debate and vote in the afternoon, a time when most parliamentarians are in home constituencies and there is little chance of debate, he said in a statement. The measure was adopted without debate. Other ministries spending have also been cut as the government seeks to trim the national deficit. The planned annual defense budget under the 2014-19 military budget law is 31.4 billion out to 2016. (By Pierre Tran)

Russia Deploys First Fighter Jets to Belarus

Russia has deployed the first four Su-27SM3 fighter jets to Belarus. The aircraft will be stationed at the 61st air base in Baranavichi, reported local daily Belorusskiy Partizan. The Belarusian Ministry of Defense did not comment on the jet fighters deployment, but Russian technical staff arrived at the base along with the aircraft, according to news agency BelaPAN. The city is located about 130 kilometers from the border of Poland and 40 kilometers from Lithuania. Earlier this year, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans to step up its military presence in Belarus by establishing an air base in the country. Shoigu said the first aircraft would arrive on Belarusian soil by the end of this year. The aircraft are a modernized variant of the Su-27, fitted with new engines, missiles and a glass cockpit. Kerry Eases Deadline For Signing Afghan Troops Deal

US Secretary of State John Kerry appeared to give Afghan President Hamid Karzai extra time to sign a bilateral security deal, saying the pact did not have to be concluded by January. And while he said it must be signed as soon as possible, he raised the option for the first time that the deal governing the presence of US troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014 could even by inked by Karzais successor, who will be chosen in April elections. The United States wants the deal to ensure legal protection for any troops left behind in a training role after the international forces leave in late 2014. Washington has warned that, without a pact, it may pull all its military out. In an interview with ABC television, the top US diplomat stressed the bilateral security agreement needed to be signed as soon a possible. If American forces were not there, I think there would be serious challenges with respect to Afghanistans security, Kerry said. But ... I believe that Hamid Karzai, either he or his successor, will sign this, he said, before adding I think he needs to sign this. Asked whether Karzai had to sign the deal by January, as had been agreed when the two sides launched negotiations a year ago, Kerry replied no. He stressed, however, that there was a cut-off date, while refusing to go into specifics. Washington has been
TNM 10

infuriated by Karzais sudden insistence after the details of the deal were agreed that the next Afghan president should sign it. In a sign of the tensions, Kerry revealed he was talking to the mercurial Afghan leader through Karzais minister and not directly. We have an agreement thats been negotiated and he has said to me personally, and as recently as a day ago, reiterated through his minister that the language is fine. Hes not going ... to seek a change in the language, Kerry said. Upping the tensions, Karzai said during a visit to India that he no longer trusts the United States. He also said he would not be intimidated into signing

the pact. I dont trust them, Karzai said in an interview at an Indian hotel, accusing the US of saying one thing and doing another. He referred specifically to a letter from US President Barack Obama assuring him that US forces would respect the safety of Afghans in their homes. They should prove it... implement the letter, respect Afghan homes, Karzai said. Just instruct no more bombings, and there will be no more bombings and, of course, launch the peace process publicly and officially, he said. Kerry acknowledged the Afghan leader was seeking further guarantees. Its clear what I think he needs in terms of assurances. I believe it may be possible to try to move this forward, the top US diplomat told ABC. He stressed again that the security pact needed to be in place so the United States and other NATO allies could start the planning for the 2014 withdrawal. You have more than 50 nations that have been involved in supporting this. They all have budgets. They all have planning requirements. And it is vital that Hamid Karzai recognize the importance of doing this, Kerry said. The US wants success in Afghanistan. And success means having an Afghan arms force that has the ability to sustain itself and provide security to the people of Afghanistan. (By Agence France-Presse)

GCC Announces a Joint Military Command

Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) announced the formation of a unified military command for the GCC countries. The unified command set-up has been mandated to the GCC Joint Military Committee, according to a statement released by the councils secretariat at the end of the 34th Summit in Kuwait City, Kuwait. The council also announced the establishment of the Gulf Academy for Strategic and Security Studies in the United Arab Emirates.

Italian Carrier Visits Gulf During Industrial Tour

An Italian aircraft carriers humanitarian mission around the Arabian Gulf and Africa was put to the test while bound for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital last month. The Cavour, the crown jewel of the Italian Navy and its newest aircraft carrier, received a distress call from a fishing boat, which was traveling off the Omani coast Nov. 27. According to Rear Adm. Paolo Treu, commander of the Italian Navys 30th Navy Group, a helicopter from the ship scrambled to the scene and a medical team was winched down to assist the boats captain, who was suffering from heart problems. We then contacted the hospital in Salalah [Oman] and transported the man for treatment 120 kilometers from the location, he said. We were very happy we could save a life. The 30th Navy Group is being deployed in the region for the first time on a mission to connect with other navies while drumming up business for Italian industry. Defense firms are paying for a portion of the deployment and companies such as Finmeccanica, Fincantieri, Elettronica and Beretta are along for the ride. Cavour deployed with the newest Italian frigate, Bergamini, alongside the patrol vessel Comandante Borsini and the supply ship Etna. We are here to use training areas in the region, to train and build cooperation in anti-piracy operations, to build relations and carry out humanitarian operations, he said. Treu said they will conduct exercises with the UAE, Qatari, Bahraini and Kuwaiti navies. When the ship left Italy on Nov. 13, Italian Navy Chief Adm. Giuseppe De Giorgi said the mission would help spur cooperation with allied navies, including Mozambique, where the Italian and local navies are due to sign a cooperation deal. The marketing of Italian naval vessels was also on the agenda in the Arabian Gulf, Morocco, South Africa and Mozambique, while in Angola, talks would continue about Italian industry helping to develop a new type of vessel for the local navy, he said. The 27,600-ton Cavour has been involved in marketing activities before. In 2010, its maiden mission took it to earthquake-stricken Haiti, bringing aid, earth-moving vehicles, hospital facilities and 900 personnel. It also stopped off in Brazil, ostensibly to take on Brazilian medical personnel, but also to support Romes efforts to market naval vessels to Brazil. On Dec. 3, the admiral and commanders of the 30th Group welcomed UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan. The visit of Sheikh Abdullah is a great opportunity to show him what Italy can do, the admiral said. When you see a ship like this, you realize we have a lot of industrial capabilities. In this ship there is the genius and excellence of Italian industry. We are very proud he is visiting the ship. It is a sign of cooperation between the UAE and Italy. This is a boost for the continued relationship between our two countries, and I am delighted they are here. I hope we can continue to build on this relationship for the benefit of both the UAE and Italy, Abdullah said. (By Awad Mustafa)

The academy will aim to bolster military cooperation through a unified education based institution, according to Matthew Hedges, analyst for the Institute of Near East and Gulf Military Analysis. The academy will look to increase knowledge transfer and greater comprehend a unified realization of threats across the entire GCC region he said. There will be an initial focus on missile defense, border security and counter terrorism. In the December 2000, the member states agreed to a joint defense agreement based on the principle that any aggression against a member state would be considered as aggression against all the GCC states. It further established a Joint Military Committee to supervise cooperation and promote collaboration in joint military exercises and coordination in the field of military industries. The declaration highlights the increasing construction of a regional security architecture which was started with the peninsula shield force and is an issue that is seen by outside observers to need more attention, Hedges added. In 2006, Saudi Arabia circulated a proposal during the GCC summit meeting in Riyadh that called for the adoption of centralized command and decentralized forces, and to disband the Peninsula Shield force as a collective single military unit in the region. The announcement came following years of indecision and non-movement. The kingdom proposed that each GCC state should designate certain military units to be part of the new structure and to station those units within each states national territory. The units would then be linked to a unified central command, according to a report published by Dr. Christian Koch of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, a German think tank. However, what emerged was the 2009 agreement to create a joint force for quick intervention to address security threats, as was demonstrated in the UAE-Saudi intervention in Bahrain in 2011. Some weeks ago, US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel emphasized the need for greater cooperation between the GCC and the US, which will in turn sell weapons to the GCC nations as a single block. He added that the US wanted to expand missile defense cooperation in the region to combat threats. The GCC statement also condemned Irans continuation of the occupation of the Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa island. The GCC continues to support of the right of sovereignty of the UAE over the three islands and considers any actions or practices carried out by Iran on the the islands null and void, as they do not change the historical facts and the legal rights and sovereignty of the UAE over the islands, said GCC Secretary General Abdel Latif Al Zayani. RUAG .300 Whisper

Precise firing at 300m
.300 Whisper weapon systems have been much appreciated by special units for the precise and quiet firing of shots in the urban environment for over twelve years. The exclusive European supplier of ammunition of this calibre offers even more with the new supersonic version .300 Whisper SWISS P HV Styx Action.
At an operative range of approx. 150m, special police and military units use the powerful .300 Whisper primarily in urban areas against secondary targets such as alarm systems, fighting dogs or cameras. The deformation ammunition .300 Whisper SWISS P HV Styx Action (HV=High Velocity) widens the application spectrum and provides highly precise hits also at 300m. The range of ammunition enables the shooter to move from subsonic to supersonic by a magazine change within seconds in order to remain efficient and convertible. The cooperation with our partner Brgger & Thomet, the leading Swiss weapons producer for this calibre in Europe, permits to obtain best results from the weapon system. The ammunition is optimally matched to the APC300 (Advanced Police Carbine) and the SPR300 (Special Purpose Rifle). Special units can use the APC300 as primary weapon and react quickly and with agility to changing scenarios with the three products. On the one hand the weapon is more precise, more silent and more powerful with the subsonic ammunition than an MP5SD. On the other it has approx. 30% more energy with the new .300 Whisper SWISS P HV Styx Action than a .223 Rem. And this not only with the same barrel length, but also less muzzle flash. RUAG can supply the cartridge also in the version .300 AAC Blackout. The .300 Whisper varies from the .300 AAC Blackout by its 0.15 mm longer case, although the dimensions of the case shoulder are exactly the same. Thanks to the slim bullet shape the cartridges fit perfectly well into the magazines of 5.56 x 45 assault rifles. In future RUAG will also offer a solution for military units in the form of a .300 Whisper HV Ball (high-velocity with FMJ projectile) which doesnt deform.

One of the disadvantages of driving Boko Haram out of the cities is that the Islamic terrorists can now set up camps across the borders in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. These three nations have far less numerous security forces and Boko Haram tends to behave on the other side of the border so as to avoid antagonizing the local tribes and security forces. So its up to Nigeria to greatly improve surveillance on its side of the border, and that still leaves a lot of the thinly populated border area unwatched most of the time. There are additional problems with the fact that over 70,000 Nigerian civilians have fled to these two

Piracy off the coast continues to be a problem, as some of the pirates now go after locals in addition to the better guarded foreign ships and oil company service boats. Robbing the locals wont make you rich but its easier and safer than the foreign owned ships. The navy has responded with more patrol boats and naval bases on the coast and more patrols and quicker reaction to pirate attacks. But so far there

KEY EVENTS December 3, 2013: In the northeast (Maiduguri) the curfew was reduced to 11 hours so people could continue their lives. Cell phone networks were also turned back on after having been shut down since May. This was seen as necessary to make it more difficult for Boko Haram raiding parties to move about undetected. Most people in the area are hostile to Boko Haram (although they agree with the Islamic terrorists hostility to corrupt and ineffective government).

Lantac-USA Dragon
n the world of black ries, the AR15 and its clones are king. There are many reasons to love the AR15, but one of the endearing qualities is the vast amount of aftermarket accessories available to the shooting public. This would include a wide variety of muzzle devices. Depending on your needs you can choose between a ash hider, compensator, muzzle brake and the all in one hybrid device. For this article, we will be looking at the muzzle brake/ compensator hybrid.

BY STEVE COULsTON & JODY LEWIs

The muzzle brake is used to counteract the recoil forces in such a way to direct the recoil back to the shooter. This is typically done with side vents which direct the gasses backward, thus reducing the perceived felt recoil by putting the brakes on, if you will. The compensator helps to reduce the rise of the barrel by directing gasses leaving the barrel upward, helping to mitigate or compensate the muzzle rise. THE BRAKE DOWN: While there are a lot of products that fall into the hyprid category, I dont think many have received the amount of debut attention as the Patent Pending DGN 556B Dragon Muzzle Brake and Compensator by Lantac USA. The Dragon is CNC machined from US Milspec AISI 4140 steel which is then nished with a Tufride QPQ Liquid Nitride

FIRE TEST FIRE TEST FIRE TEST FIRE TEST FIRE TEST FIR

process to create a corrosion resistant and extremely durable nish. The overall dimensions of the Dragon are 2.570 long with a diameter of .870. It weighs in at 3.2 oz and is threaded for x28 for 5.56x45/.223 caliber barrels. PERFORMANCE FEAtURES: Lantac Dragon features a primary discharge chamber that incorporates angled, vertical porting to direct gasses upward to compensate for muzzle rise. This allows the shooter to maintain a better sight picture and the ability to drive the gun back on to target quicker for follow up shots. There are also three larger chambers at the 3 and 9 oclock position to act as a muzzle brake and reduce perceived felt recoil. Lantac uses two patent pending methods in their muzzle device to enhance its performance. UFA (Ultra Fast Attenuation) and SEP (Short, Energy, Pulse).

According to Lantacs DGN556B spec sheet the denitions of UFA and SEP are as follows: UFA: Ultra Fast Attenuation disrupts blast gas as it passes through the brake giving it an extremely low signature for such an effective device. The Dragon is not a Flash Suppressor, but it is very efcient at management of muzzle blast in more than one way. SEP: Short. Energy. Pulse. In muzzle brakes with longer energy pulses recoil has more of a cumulative effect. The shooter is still managing the energy load from the rst shot when the second occurs, as subsequent shots or pulses of energy are delivered they are constantly working to regain position but slowly being pushed further back. With LANTAC S.E.P Technology the energy pulse is shortened and it is made possible for the shooter to regain their original position much quicker, subsequent pulses of energy do not overlap as much and therefore muzzle recoil over single and multiple shots is greatly reduced. Sustained full auto re is possible with much improved muzzle control meaning that all shots fall on target.

RANGE TIME: During one of our recent range sessions we had the opportunity to get one of the Dragon installed on one of our custom ARs. Installation was easy and straight forward and is similar to other muzzle device installations. Once installed we loaded up and started putting rounds down range. Shooting with the Dragon was a very pleasant and enjoyable experience. The recoil impulse, while minimal on a 5.56, was pretty much eliminated. Follow up shots were easy and rapid. Muzzle blast for the shooter wasnt really an issue, however like most brakes, anyone standing to the side of the shooter will not be happy. As we were shooting outside, the blast wasnt too terrible. Indoor shooting would be a different story. LAStING IMpRESSIONS: Due to limited time and ammunition availability, we didnt have a ton of rounds to put through it. We do plan to keep the Dragon on the gun and continue to shoot it in our shoots. We hope to evaluate a few more aspects of the Lantac Dragon in the near future. The rst is muzzle ash. While it was rainy and overcast for part of the shoot, we were not able to see any muzzle ash so we plan to take this device out during a low light shoot and see what kind of ash signature is created. Second, we would like to evaluate how controllable it is during full auto re. Lantac has an outstanding promo video on their webside that really shows off this capability, but we would like to validate it ourselves. Besides, its always nice to have an excuse to ip the fun switch. Over all, we were very impressed and look forward to more Dragon time! The Lantac Dragon Muzzle Brake MSRP is $140. Its available at Rainier Arms for just $125.19. For more information visit www.lantac-usa.com. nd Lantac on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LanTacUSA.

Closing the book and going to bed at night, is feeling peace within yourself. Many people believe that forgiveness is making up with a person who may have hurt you, or perhaps there was an incident that happened within or not within your control. Many of the same people are unaware that forgiveness is actually about letting go of anger. After 15 years of doctors, educating myself and involving more respectful, healthy individuals back into my life I have had a dramatic upgrade in how good I feel. Ive wanted to be a police officer for as long as I can remember and was drawn to wearing a uniform from a very young age, is a quote from a man I felt drawn toward as a teenager for his leadership while I was enrolled as an air cadet. The cadet program, simply put, is more or less a low level introduction to the military (in comparison) for youth ages 12-18. The program is not as intense as it used to be, but when I was enrolled as a member I looked up to this particular senior cadet of

mine the most. I followed through with his recommendation for me to take over the sports program at the squadron once he graduated. I had difficulty getting my course because of my undiagnosed disabilities at the time, but I pushed hard to go home that summer with my certificate. His words expressed to me to relay to you all, is that his intention is for those of you reading to know that regardless of what uniform you wear, people who are not a part of your world look up to and respect you. He is now a Police Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and is posted in Alberta, Canada. I remember talking to him while he was training for this career choice and am delighted to have him participate in my project. The Canadian Constable has shared with me his experiences that turned him off from the job, to how it was shaped by just the right leader to further inspire and encourage his aspirations to better himself: Everyone has bad days at work, he said, but the importance

of being mindful of how your attitude affects others, is crucial. This mans ideals reflects the heart and soul of Project Base Line, and also the most important behaviour when dealing with stigma - a positive attitude to never stop learning. His comfort wearing a uniform extends as far back from when he was a Boy Scout and being a Warrant Officer First Class with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. I knew that Law Enforcement was my calling. A day I will never forget was when I entered the private security industry at 18 years old, and it was during my training shift at a local shopping mall. September 11, 2001 was a day that changed the world and after seeing such evil, I knew that I had to do something to make a difference and keep people safe. Over the course of nine years in this sector, he had the opportunity to work on several assignments including foot, mobile and bicycle patrols. His venues ranged within

In 2004, he became certified to work K-9 Patrol and quickly advanced into Everyone has bad days at work, but the importance of being mindful of how your attitude affects others, is crucial. drug and explosive detection. He had the opportunity to participate in many training courses and seminars in Canada and the US. Some were offered in-house while others he paid for out of his own pocket. He had the opportunity to meet and work with police officers from across Canada and the US. Ninty-nine percent of those interactions were great, but every once in a while I would meet some officers that seemed to have misplaced their baton, and I had a pretty good idea where it was stuck, he said. I remember one morning at around 5AM, I was patrolling one of my sites in a major Canadian city and found a vehicle that had all the signs pointing to it being stolen. I reported it to the police who confirmed that it was a stolen vehicle and dispatched a pair of officers that had been parked nearby. I enthusiastically approached them, ready to tell them about how I came across the vehicle and why I thought it was stolen. This is standard wannabe protocol, but I didnt exactly get a warm reception.

what they were upset about. I realize now that the officers were in the last leg of an overnight shift In fact it was quite the opposite and and were just trying to catch up they were outright crusty. I thought on a busy Friday nights worth of I did a great thing; I recovered a paperwork so they could go home stolen auto! Chalk one up for the on time. opinion of the police changed about 13 hours later. While on patrol I came across another vehicle near the same area that I thought may have been stolen. As you can imagine I was reluctant to call the police, but felt it was my duty to do so. Minutes later an officer arrived on scene and checked out the vehicle. He told me that the vehicle wasnt stolen, just out of place. The officer was very polite

and rather jolly. I mentioned to him about my poor experience the previous night and what he said to me had a lasting effect. This Officer told to me that he had no reason to be upset, They give me a car, they fill it with gas, what do I care where they send me? At the end of the day it doesnt matter, its my job to go. The 10 minutes I spent with that police officer had a profound effect on the way I looked at policing and how I looked at myself. I knew, that was the kind of cop I wanted to be. In the fall of 2010, the Canadian Constable was accepted as a Cadet with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) after a two year hiring process. Following the 6 months of gruelling physical and academic training coupled with all out psychological warfare from the drill instructors, he graduated from the RCMP Depot and began his policing career. He took the experiences, skills and lessons he learned from his days in security and applied them to his new gig. He said that some days are hard to handle, and some days are draining for different reasons. Regardless, he tries to remember that one officer, what he said, and to have a positive outlook on things. I find the best way to keep it fresh and positive is to never stop learning. I spend time doing personal research, attending workshops, seminars and training courses. I found a seminar being hosted nearby through the International Law Enforcement Educators Association (ILEETA) website. So in October 2013, I traveled to Great Falls, Montana (at my own expense) to attend a 3 day seminar called Pat McCarthys Street Crime Seminar. The Seminar is geared towards Undercover Operators, Crime Suppression Teams and Street Cops with all levels of experience.

In the modern era batteries are one of the most required items of any soldier/security operators etc. If we go backward in the 90s, any operator would have required batteries only for its flashlight and radios, or for some new weapon devices (as in instance the illuminator or laser point). Within the time and the technological development, more and more electronic devices have been introduced in our daily routine and of course into the operational world. Today we can count GPS, Mobile Phones, Cameras, NVGs tablet etc that are constantly on the rucksack of any operators. The mobile quality of solar panels makes it the perfect operational/outdoor source of renewable energy.

As a result of this technological development, the need to have quantities of batteries in our backpacks drastically increased, to the point that operators have started to remove other equipment from their rucksack in order to gain room for batteries. If that was not enough, some of the equipment nowadays in use dont have the possibility to change the batteries, or have specific battery pack that can be recharged only by the use of specific docking station or a USB connection. In instance, devices such as mobile phones and tablets exploit only a single non-replaceable battery forcing the owners to connect to a power source whenever possible. At the same time, you can also attach the included 12 volt cigarette adapter to the panel and charge a second device. Good feature of G10 is the pocket that allows to store chargers, cords or the Battery Pack. Furthermore it allows you to keep the device you are charging in the pocket, which comes in handy if you need to hang the panel up off the ground and of course when you want to keep all your equipment ready for a quick departure. From our test, carried on in several different conditions, Powertrekk has always been able to fully recharge (starting from off mode and no more power) our mobile phones, or a battery pack of 4 AA batteries in less than three hours. SIGHTS Changing your sights is usually something left done for the local gunsmith, but if you are up to the task, you can do it yourself. There are three main options as I see it. First you can use a good old hammer, brass punch and action block, but keep in the mind S&W installs their sights with a hydraulic press and that is a lot of pressure my friends. Some sights come off with little force; some

require a lot of pounding and risk of marring your slide. Your second option is to rent or borrow a sight pusher from a friend. Currently, Speed Shoot Specialties is the only company I know off who rents their M&P sight pushers and please note, the shield requires a different pusher than the standard M&P Line. Third and last option is to break down and buy your own pusher. MGW is the most common and can be had for around $100 through Brownells. 10-8 Performance Officer, competitor and designer Hilton Yam

The DCAEK (Duty/Carry) trigger kit is hands down one of the smoothest semi-drop-in triggers on the market, perhaps the only. Utilizing their YouTube installation videos, it takes about hour or so to install and was quite easy with minimal tools. The Apex action block really aided in easy installation as it holds the frame in place while you work. With their kit installed, trigger pull is smooth, consistent, not to light and a huge improvement over the factory. If you make one upgrade, it would be this one. FRAME To stipple or not to stipple, that is the question you must ask yourself. Some guys love it and some hate. Personally I enjoy a moderate amount of stippling but what I really dig is some of the frame cutting to allow for a higher grip. As my buddy and trainer Stephen Pineau told me,

the higher you can get your grip the more you are able to control the recoil pulse of the gun. I highly recommend you try a gun that has had the frame modified in this way. When it comes to modifying your frame, there are only a few people that I would let have at it with my guns. Enhanced Precision Products Based in California (Sorry Logan). The first true predecessors of todays bodyguards are the Japanese samurai. Samurai were usually distributed to the free working under contract for employers and those who have been linked to hereditary lords.

was completely blind from a very young age and lived the majority of his life in the dark. Even with the loss of his sight, he still lived a productive life. He would often say to me that I was looking good. While he had a great sense of humor and made the best of his situation, I know he would have given just about anything to be able to see his grandchildren and great grandchildren. I think everyone would agree they value their eyes. Sight is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable of our five senses. God only gave us two, so it is important we do everything we can to protect them. We wear sun glasses on sunny days to protect our vision from glare. It is also mandatory for construction workers on a job site to protect their eyes from debris and impact. For those of us in the shooting community, we wear eye pro as well or at least we should. There are many types of eye pro available, however not all eye pro is created equal. ESS is a company that specializes in creating eyewear for Americas elite warriors. sole authorized issuer of eyewear for the United States Marine Corps and are a leading or sole provider for the other branches of service. They also provide their eyewear to other service personnel in more than 100 other nations. This is impressive, but what makes ESS so special? ESS says their innovation is born from intense listening to elite warriors. [They] dissect their challenges, then roll up [their] sleeves to create real-life solutions that will work under duress. As a result, ESS ballistic-grade eyewear provides peak performance thats hard at work today in the most hostile environments. The entire line of battle-proven ESS eye pro is engineered to meet or exceed the most stringent U.S. Military and ANSI Z87.1-2010

Specifications. They put all of this innovation and end-user input into their glasses, lenses, goggles, and eye shields. The result is eyewear products that can withstand the rigors of combat and everyday life. I was fortunate to get my hands on a pair of their ROLLBAR glasses. These are stylish ballistic glasses that feature quick change lenses. This is a feature I really appreciate. I have owned quick change lenses in the past that were held in place with magnets. This worked fairly well until I got hit in the face, dropped my glasses, etc. Upon any sort of impact the lenses would pop out, which would ultimately result in scratched lenses and unprotected eyes. Also, the magnets would break off the lenses, which resulted in useless glasses. With the ROLLBARs this doesnt

happen. They have an ingenious locking lever called a lens gate that is built into the side of the frame. Simply fold the lens gate, pop out the lens, put in the new lens, reengage the lens gate and away you go. Nothing to it and the lenses stay put. My glasses came with a clear and smoke grey tinted lenses. The lenses are stored in a soft pouch that fits into the handsome, semi-rigid glasses case. Other colored lenses such as yellow and copper are also available as well as polarized and prescription lenses options. I will be adding the yellow can copper lenses to my frames in the near future. This allows me to use the same frame for a wide variety of lighting conditions. Another thing I really appreciate about the ROLLBAR is the frame. The frame has a masculine, tactical look that is perfect for LEO, Military and other first responders. The frames are made of Thermoplastic and are matte in finish and are not
TNM 72

glossy. They are very rugged, very light weight and can be worn for extended periods of time without any discomfort to the bridge of the nose. Headwear and eyewear that fit too tight can cause headaches. The ear piece arms have a decent curve to them to be ergonomic to the head. They fit snuggly, without being too tight. The arms are also thin and flat allowing them to be unobtrusive with ball caps, helmets and other head ware. This profile is also ideal for compatibility with larger hearing pro and communication head gear. The lenses are 2.2mm high impact polycarbonate that are coated with ESS proprietary anti-scratch coating. The lenses are medium to large and provide ample field and protection. As mentioned previously, the glasses meet ANSI Z87.1-2010, U.S. OSHA and MIL-PRF-31013 (clause 3.5.1.1) standards. What does that mean to

you? In a nut shell, it means these glasses are bad ass and hard as nails. ANSI/ISEAZ87.1-2010 establishes the performance criteria and testing requirements for devices used to protect the eyes and face from injuries from impact, nonionizing radiation and chemical exposure. The MIL-PRF standards are where it gets really impressive. This standard requires the lenses can withstand the penetration of a 0.15 caliber, 5.8 grain, T37 shaped projectile at a velocity of 640 to 660 feet per second. This gives your eyes solid protection from dirt, debris, powder residue, and other nasty junk. Conclusion: I am very happy with my ESS glasses and wear them during normal work life and to the range. They are now my go to glasses. I feel confident they will protect my eyes and provide years of outstanding use. They can be purchased for $115 directly from ESS.

TOO GOOD tO BE tRUE? well this time you are wrong. The way to reduce water consumption, adapt to the heat and be lighter, more aware and focused is an adaptation we acquired through millennia even hundreds of thousands of years as hunters and pursued ourselves by predators. The techniques are simple. But it requires some basic understanding of how to control it. Once understood, you can use it jungles, deserts, high dry mountains well anywhere in fact. LOCAlS KNOW tACtICS OF HOW tO ClIMAtICAllY ADAPt Through travels in many dryland countries we never ceased to be amazed at why locals rarely carried water and at most a small bottle while we were consuming endless amounts, attributing it to natural local adaptation, strange genes or hardships acquired . Until experiencing that the locals when using our kit and our food and our way to move became just as dehydrated as us. In fact, while we have certainly experienced some minor differences amongst people in the world in physiological adaptation to their environment, the far majority could with improved insight simply be explained by practical adaptation not genetics. Which means that any of us can do it too. BASICS OF WAtER CONSUMPtION Three critical things you must understand -food, sweat and body fat. You loose water by eating different foods and salt You loose water through overheating, mainly in the form of sweat Water is released when you burn fat and carbohydrates, and water released will increase with increasing activity

You CAN NOT wear 25 k of pack a gs+40kgs to functi nd expect heat. So on in the rry - don t work.

Yes, you may also loose a little by breathing, but its marginal and covering your mouth and breathing through your nose, often used by desert people may help a little but minor compared to the above. And forget stupid things like soaking your scarf in urine or other foolish tricks with minimal effect. I. TYPE AND AMOUNt OF FOOD INtAKE CRItICAl tO WAtER CONSUMPtION Protein makes you warm 1-2 hours after intake Of all, this is perhaps the most critical component affecting your performance. Firstly, near half of the energy in protein converts to heat in your body. So if you

eat protein, like bacon and eggs or protein bars or the like in the morning and many of todays warriors are too focused on building upper body muscles and protein intake (but will struggle in the heat digging ditches a full day like the skinny locals do easily). If you eat protein, your body will start heating 1.5-2 hours afterwards. You will start sweating, most attribute this in the morning to Wow now it starts getting hot. But its a pure function of your intake. Most are hotter in camp than on patrol. And many try to beef up before patrol in case they run into trouble. No need more on this later. And it increases your water consumption and feeling of overheating baaad choice.

TNM 77

All you need r is sugar, wate and maybe a little salt if very hot

Carbohydrates create a little heat but fiber ties water Remember that you need to use water for boiling rice or putting into your field rations. You may get most of that water back, however, some gets tied in, in the process including saliva (spit) in considerable amounts. So eating a lot is simply not smart. So switching from protein to carbohydrates will reduce the feeling of heat, and thus your water consumption some because you will sweat less but you still require more water than if you only top off your blood sugar with

your water bottle. If you go light in addition (more on this later), All you need is sugar, water and you can EASILY patrol in 35maybe a little salt if very hot 40 C the whole day with only 2 Well, then you will say should I liters of water. Compared to 6-12 not eat? I need that energy or I will liters if you go heavy, tight cool go down or loose attention! ! Well combat fatigues and armor and of course you need energy. But you especially traditional military salt will find that the exact opposite and protein-rich rations. Drink in the morning, add some sugar to thing will happen. eat, and bring a few biscuits, or better wine gums they are juicy, Only food in morning dissolve slower and make you less is tea and sugar thirsty. Bush wars are won with If you go light and dont carry too lemon biscuits. Try it. You will much and yes you need to do quickly see that not only do you so if you want to be mobile all you need is tea with sugar in the NOT get the common sensation morning, and a little sugar in of getting very hot and sweating,

on Focus on Focus on Focus on Focus on Focus on Focus on

even when sitting still after 1-2 hours after eating you also get less thirsty during the day, the heat is suddenly not that bad and you feel light and moreover you dont get drowsy!!! That is what I call a warrior diet. In extreme heat it works great to have a little sugar in your water bottle. If you start getting headache, take a salt tablet and it will vanish in 1-3 minutes (!). Be advised that your field rations are worse than that. Many military rations contain 12-20 grams of salt per day Considering that your natural

need is less than 1/10 of that you will experience that when you eat those rations you get thirsty right? Natural effect. So that was numero uno in reducing water consumption eat right or rather dont. II. AVOID OVERHEAtING Remember that not only do you avoid having something thick or anything that ties still air anywhere on your body you want air to circulate which means SPACE. And as little to restrict it as possible. And remember that it is on your back that you

rid yourself with excess heat firstly there is a reason why backpacks were NOT used in many hot countries, rather carrying things on their heads or high on shoulders no padded anatomic packs. I think indigenous peoples would have invented backpacks in the tropics too. They were quite good on any other items. In the north you can buy backpacks anywhere - Not so in hot countries. Well, easier said than done you will say. Well, you completed the first step on to next. You CANNOT wear 25 kgs+40kgs of
TNM 79

pack and expect to function in the heat. Sorry dont work. Yes, if you are breaching a building, you may choose to carry 20 -30 kgs as you enter body armor, ammo and water as you will in dust, smoke and expect a lot of incoming. Of course. But in many cases you are not, you are patrolling. Safety means your ability to be alert, awake and your ability to move into cover quickly, regroup, outflank or cover large areas fast or pull out quickly if ambushed. Getting pinned down is NEVER good. People get hurt. So first thing CUT DOWN WEIGHT AND ARMOR. Secondly, your uniform. More and more uniforms are tight, have too many pockets on the legs, many layers consisting of reinformcements, pockets, straps. Again, if you are not breaching a building, your legs were made for walking and running. Straps and leg holsters etc restrict circulation and tie clothing close, making you warmer and less mobile, frankly. All hunters and natives walking non-naked had LOOSE light pants. The body-sewn style advertised for with tight fit and special stitching to increase movement does not. Old military pants were made for marching few pockets and LOOSE, especially on the upper leg part. You want them thin and light, and not heavily padded around your hip and back where do you sweat first? Armpits and back right. So if its tight and padded just on your back just the place you need for quitting yourself with excess heat firstly you get even warmer right? So can you avoid packs too GOOD MOVE. The old military packs relying on a personal load carrying equipment around the hips and a high

pack, leaving as much as possible the middle back open (!) perfect for marching actually or patrolling. Maybe there was a reason for it.. Notice ALL locals in hot climates. Do you EVER see anyone with tight clothes? Religion and culture you say? Well, strangely enough, it works perfectly in the heat. Footwear I have seen people advertising for goretex desert boots. Please. If goretex was optimal breathability, as an Austrian SF community friend said they would produce breathing masks and gas mask filters in goretex, - which they dont. If thorns use desert boots otherwise running shoes or sandals are best. Pants are very important then upper body. Here, forget about magic moisture-wicking textiles and claims of air condition effect.. Key again is light meaning cotton, coarse weave and/or thin and light. And avoid as much as you possibly can to have any straps or armor unless absolutely necessary that ties the clothing close to your body. You want it loose ! Its better to have two 1 liters (quart) water bottles than a camelback tied to your back where its hard to control water consumption. Thin, thin wool or very light loose clothing is used by all of those who are not near naked in the tropics. Hey, maybe there is a reason for it.

You sweat from 0.1-2.0 liters per hour. III. LEARN tO USE YOUR BODY RESOURCES FOR WAtER Firstly, if you are hydrated in the morning you have about 1.5 liters of water in your body to spend without effect on your performance. If you dont eat food, only tea and a little sugar you can make that last 15 hours or 45 minutes. Your choice. Land workers and herders do the trick every day in the tropics. So can you. Secondly, salt ties water in your body. You have about 1.5 liters of water tied in your body to salt. No food and salt intake and your body can release it for direct consumption. Thirdly, magic when you burn 1 kg of fat in your body due to the chemical/physiological process you

If you move smoothly, avoiding extreme expenditure (which will immediately burn out your 2-4 grams of blood sugar and a few hundreds grams stored in your liver like a pack of biscuits or chocolate) you can burn up to maybe 0.5 kg or a pound of fat a day equaling 0.6 l of water made available.

In Syria Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab allies continue to be the main source of rebel weapons and other military supplies. Despite American promises last June to provide military aid for the rebels, not much has shown up because of American fears that some of the aid will reach Islamic terrorist groups.
Some of anything sent into Syria for the rebels gets to Islamic terrorist rebels as these groups continue to be the most effective fighters (they are fanatic and willing to die, even if often less skilled than moderate rebels)

and will steal if they are not offered some of the aid. The Saudi solution to this unfortunate (in Saudi eyes) lack of American action is to try and form a well trained and equipped rebel army in Jordan. American and NATO trainers have been helping out, but the number of volunteers has not been great. The Saudi plan was to create a trained rebel force of 50,000 men but so far only a few thousand volunteers have been obtained.

Concealment: If the enemy can se you, he can hit you with his fire. By being concealed and hidden from enemy observation you can avoid this from happening. Camouflage and Concealment is anything that hides you from enemy observation. Concealment does not protect you from enemy fire. Therefore always assume that you are under observation and behave in such manner that you stay undetected. Concealment, like cover, can also be natural or man-made. Natural concealment includes such things as bushes, grass, trees, and shadows. If possible, natural concealment should not be disturbed. When the terrain does not provide sufficient concealment, you must construct your own camouflage. Man-made concealment includes such things as battle-dress uniforms, camouflage nets, face paint, and natural material that has been moved from its original location. Man-made concealment must blend into the natural concealment provided by the terrain. Take advantage of the weather
TNM 90

conditions and use fog, rain, snowfall, smoke to hide your movement and location. Always strive for operating in such terrain that provides you with good cover as well as camouflage and concealment. Make minimal changes to the terrains appearance. Adapt to the terrain and work with it - not against it. Each soldier is responsible for camouflaging himself, his equipment and his position. The five general techniques of employing C&C is = hiding (hinder detection/keeping an object undetected by a screen or staying out of sight), blending (alter an objects appearance so that it becomes a part of the background), disguising (hide an objects true appearance by resembling something else), disrupting (alter or eliminate regular patterns & outlines), decoying (simulate an object in order to draw attention and enemy fire). The 4 diciplines of C & C: Anything that could attract the enemies attention might lead to reveal your position and draw fire. Therefore, its

necessary to behave in a correct and disciplined manner. The first basic rule is to MAINTAIN THE NATURAL LOOK OF THE AREA! This is done by the 4 disciplines: Light: Light discipline is controlling the use of lights at night by such things as not smoking in the open, not walking around with a flashlight on, and not using vehicle headlights. The use of light should be restricted to an absolute minimum. Noise: Noise discipline is taking action to deflect sounds generated by your unit (such as operating equipment) away from the enemy and, when possible, using methods to communicate that do not generate sounds (armand-hand signals). Noise and acoustic signatures are recognizable and reveals/identifies activity and objects. Movement: Movement discipline is such things as not moving about fighting positions unless necessary, and not moving on routes that lack cover and concealment. In the defence, build a wellcamouflaged fighting position and avoid moving about. In the offense, conceal yourself and your equipment with camouflage and move in woods or on terrain that gives concealment. Outlines and shadows may reveal your position or equipment to air or ground observers. Outlines and shadows can be broken up with camouflage. When moving, stay in the shadows when possible.

Tracks: Track and trace discipline. A track is a mark or imprint on the ground, damage to a tree/ Busch, footprints in dust, left behind trash, etc. that is left from the passage of a person, vehicle, weapon system or an object of some sort. Examinations of such a track reveals such things as: size, equipment, type, direction of movement, etc. To avoid leaving such tracks are vital for the survival of the unit. Avoid movement over soft ground, dry-dusty roads. Leave absolutely no signs of your presence when leaving an area - tidy up after yourself and leave no empty canisters or trash behind. In order to maintain and keep the 4 disciplines of C & C the following should be taken under consideration: Movement & Behavior: The human eye is attracted to movement, hence move carefully and if necessary slow. Move on such grounds and in such manner that you leave a minimum of trace. Avoid soft grounds and be conscious of where and how you put down your feet, keep a low and small profile. Use the [natural cover and concealment] the surroundings provide, [adapt pace and behaviour after the terrain]. Keep exposed activity to an absolute minimum, strive for minimum visible activity and movement and avoid such terrain that kicks up dust and smoke clouds. Sound: Avoid sounds that might reveal your position. Silence gear that might rattle, tape it down and fill
TNM 91

empty canteens/magazines, and use hand signals prior to speech. Reflection & Shine: Tone down shiny areas, avoid reflections from polished areas, metal, windshields, glass, scopes, [binoculars], etc. Cover-up, paint or smudge such areas and surfaces that might leave reflections. Even your own skin leaves a reflective area and has to be covered/smudged. Light: Minimize the use of lights. When you use lights (torches, flashlights, headlights, etc.) use a red filter in order to preserve your night vision and minimise exposure. Smell: Avoid distinct, characteristic and sharp smells. Oil/grease, gasoline, cooking, food, fire, urine and excrements, etc. are examples of such items. Tracks & Trace: NEVER leave tracks and things that are traceable. If tracks are unavoidable, try to erase or hide them. Clean up after yourself when leaving a base, temporary stop, etc. NEVER drop debris, litter, used wrappings and cans, etc. Leave the area as it was when you got there. The depth and shape of a track can reveal type of vehicle, amount and travelled direction. Heat: Avoid leaving a heat signature, such as warm engines, body heat, open fires etc. If possible coverup and hide. US. Snipers sometimes sew pieces of the s.k. Space blanket (Mylar) in their Gullies suits to reflect the body heat back to the body, hereby the IR-signature becomes minimal although the suit becomes very warm to operate in. Heat generating sources such as generator, tents, etc. can be dug down into the ground to minimize the heat signature at ground level. Heat emanating sources such as chimneys and ventilation systems should be placed as far from vulnerable areas as possible. Smoke: Avoid leaving smoke and if possible hide it. Use small several fires rather then one big. Use dry wood and avoid burning such items that tend to produce smoke such as tires, rubber, plastics, etc. Protruding: Avoid protruding/noticeable areas and objects. Shadow: A shadow of an object can reveal its presence and identity. By staying in and use the shadows one can stay hidden. A final way of keeping the enemy from observing your activity is by setting up a screen. The screen could be made out of smoke, a barricade on a street or maybe a piece of cloth hanging in front of the windows hindering him from see whats going on inside, etc. Remember that a

smoke cloud could be just as revealing as an non camouflaged object. The best use of a smoke screen is to make it as thick and wide as possible between you and the enemy. Camouflage - blending in: Camouflage is anything you use to keep yourself, your equipment, and your position from looking like what they are. Both natural and man-made material can be used for camouflage. Change and improve your camouflage often. The time between changes and improvements depends on the weather and on the material used. Natural camouflage will often die, fade, or otherwise lose its effectiveness. Likewise, man-made camouflage may wear off or fade. When those things happen, you and your equipment or position may not blend with the surroundings. That may make it easy for the enemy to spot you. The most vital thing to think about in camouflage is to match the terrain, blend in with the background and to be absorbed by the surroundings. A science of camouflage consciousness have to be established and used - improper camouflage will draw attention and give away your position.

Before camouflaging, study the terrain and vegetation of the area in which you are operating. Then pick and use the camouflage material that best blends with that area. When moving from one area to another, change camouflage as needed to blend with the surroundings. Take grass, leaves, brush, and other material from your location and apply it to your uniform and equipment and put face paint on your skin. Make sure that the added camouflage doesnt hinder your mobility and ability to operate the equipment. Also dont take to much at the same place - otherwise this will reveal your presence/position - use as much of the natural vegetation as possible without disrupting or killing it. Form/Shape/Contour/Outline: Low position = low profile. Avoid straight lines and contours by braking up silhouettes, shapes and contours of body, equipment and vehicles. No recognisable lines or shapes should be visible. Always strive for operating against a dark/non contrasting background. Colour/Pattern/Texture: Blend in and use the right colours by looking at the colours in the area
TNM 93

of operations and match your camouflage to them. Blend in with and follow the pattern and texture of your surroundings. Ad texture to smooth un-natural surfaces. Shadow & Shade: Use shadows and blend in with the dark areas, Your own or your vehicles shadow can easily be recognised and identified so stay in the shade. Vegetation: Natural foliage is the best camouflage, take the right amount and right kind of vegetation. Remember to keep it fresh and replace it if necessary. Use the cut vegetation proper and in a correct manner - turn the leafs/branches/grass with the right side up - the way it grows. Terrain: Use the terrain to your advantage, by the use of plants, tall grass, shadows, hollows, etc. Avoid movement that may show of your silhouette or indicate your presence such as: skylines, hills & hilltops, ridges, trails and roads, etc. Try to at all times operate against a dark background. Personal camouflage: Face & skin: The idea of facial camouflage is to brake up the familiar and easily recognisable facial features. Exposed skin reflects light and may draw the enemys attention. Even very dark skin, because of its natural oil, will reflect light. Your skin must therefore also be camouflaged and all exposed skin areas must be covered.

When applying camouflage to your skin, work with a buddy (in pairs) and help each other. Apply a two-colour combination of camouflage stick in an irregular pattern. Paint shiny and protruding areas (forehead, cheekbones, nose, ears, and chin) with a dark colour. Paint shadow areas (around the eyes, under the nose, and under the chin) with a light colour. In addition to the face, paint the exposed skin on the back of the neck, arms, and hands. Palms of hands are not normally camouflaged if arm-andhand signals are to be used. Remove all jewellery to further reduce shine or reflection. When camouflage sticks are not issued, use burnt cork, bark, charcoal, lampblack, or light-coloured mud. Helmet: 1.) Start out with your helmet cover. Make sure that it fits tight and well over your helmet - that it has a good basic camouflage pattern that suits your area of operations. If necessary, attach cord (preferable elastic) to the cover - intended for attachment of complementary camouflage. 2.) Add strips of burlaps, pieces of cloth and camouflage net to your helmet cover - disguising the shape and outline of the helmet. Make sure that it stays on and doesnt hinder your ability to operate. 3.) Finally, add fresh vegetation. Take the right kind of vegetation that suits your operational area. Use plenty but its also important not to overdo it, since the effect will be the opposite. Let the camouflage hang down on the sides of the helmet as this helps ridding the helmet signature.

inside inside inside inside inside inside inside inside insi

Uniform & Equipment: Most uniforms come already camouflaged. However, it may be necessary to add more camouflage to make the uniform blend better with the surroundings. To do this, put mud on the uniform or attach leaves, grass, or small branches to it. Too much camouflage, however, may draw attention. By adding extra camouflage in forms of vegetation, pieces of bush/grass etc. to your uniform, weapon, gear, harness, rug sack, etc. you brake up the outlines of the body and the gear, blends better in with the environment surrounding you, and gets an even better camouflage. Make sure that you can still use and reach things needed, and that the added camouflage doesnt hinder the ability to operate your weapon, gear or in any way hinders your ability to move and fight. Vehicles & equipment: Heavy Weaponry, Equipment and Vehicles must also to be camouflaged. A reflection on a water surface or an objects shadow can reveal as much as observing the real object - break it up. Do not leave shiny or light-coloured objects lying about. Hide mess kits, mirrors, food containers, and white underwear and towels. Buildings & basecamps: New buildings should blend in with the buildings nearby - built in the same style, painted in the same colours, etc. Dugout holes for bunker systems, etc. stands out in the terrain and should be covered. Even out unwanted shadows or sharps edges with dirt walls, etc. If there is a more permanent base - natural or planted growth are ideal

and should be left in peace, undisturbed - as long as they dont hinder the bases functions. Cover roads/ paths/vehicles/etc. with camouflage nets so that they cant be spotted from the air. Different types of terrain: Urban: Greyish colours with smooth patterns are ideal. Forrest & Jungle: Different shades of green as dominating colours are ideal, these are complemented with dark brow colours. Snow: White and very pale gray are ideal. Remember that it can be dark spots even in snowy areas - if dressed in white - stay in white areas! If dressed in dark clothing - stay under trees and avoid the open. Snow can emphasize objects appearance and make them easier to spot. Tracks are difficult to avoid in snowy terrain - hence its easier to lay out false tracks and dummy positions for the enemy to follow. Strict movement discipline is vital - number/size of trails/ roads and movement must be kept to a minimum - try to move in such manner that the tracks arent possible to spot from the air. Vapour clouds and fog from troop movement, equipment, breathing, etc. are easily spotted from far away distances. Sound travels much further than in

inside inside inside inside inside inside inside inside

temperate climates - keep sounds to a minimum. Mountain: Different shades of green as domination colours are ideal. Depending on the season a lighter or darker pattern should be chosen. The green is complemented with dark brown and/or greyish colours. Remember that mountain areas often have spots and areas of snow. Desert: Light brown and sand is ideal. In some desert areas a pale light green is applicable. The British SAS sometimes uses a pale pink colour on their vehicles. Dust clouds while on the move/under ongoing activity, is one of the biggest problems in a desert when it comes to C&C.

Means of detection: The enemy has many resources at hand to detect your position. As the technology develops it gets more and more difficult to protect one self from detection. Therefore the ability to use camouflage & concealment in a proper manner becomes even more important. Satellites: Fly over big areas from a very high altitude (from a trajectory in space or in the atmosphere), equipped with various cameras with ir capabilities etc. Aircraft: Can operate from both high and low altitudes can be equipped with radar systems, cameras, infrared cameras, various sorts of weaponry, etc.

to keep low and break up/disrupt the radar signals. Aircraft can drop aluminium strips that form clouds to hide the numbers of participating aircraft, etc. One limitation is that natural occurring item such as large rocks, hills, mountains, etc. - creates a radar shadow - where the radar cant see through.

Heavy W e Equipme aponry, nt an Vehicles must also d to be camou reflection flaged. A surface o on a water r an o shadow c an revea bjects l as much as observ i n g t h e re object - b reak it upal .

UAVs/UGVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle/Unmanned Ground Vehicle): Low flying surveillance robots and unmanned vehicles. Operates just like an aircraft or ordinary ground vehicle, but is more difficult to detect and protect oneself from. Can be equipped with a variety of sensors, cameras and armament. Because of their sixe and ability to operate in silence theses kind of vessels are difficult to protect oneself from although when they are detected they are easy to fight. Remember though that this will indicate your presence in the area and will probably draw attention. Radar systems: Air radar systems, sea based or ground surveillance radar systems are all extremely difficult to protect one self from. The primary rule is

Sensor systems: Sensor systems includes UV/ IR-radiation detection devises, acoustic detection, Intrusion detection devices, laser tripwires, alarm systems, etc. Take advantage of bomb/grenade detonations etc. that produces vibrations and flashes which disturbs this kind of sensors. The sensor systems could be triggered by seismic-, heat-, movement-, light-, sound-, magnetic detecting, etc. Active sensors emit energy that reflects from an object and is recaptured by the emitting or nearby sensor, indicating the presence of a target. Such sensors are hence easier to spot and protect one self from. Examples of such sensors are: searchlights, radars, etc. Passive sensors do not emit energy, they collect energy which my indicate the presence of an object. Examples of such sensors are IR imaging devises, acoustic sensors, photographic devises, etc. Signals: Minimise your radio usage and transmit short messages only. The enemy will try to find your transmissions in order to locate units and to listen to your communications. Optics: All kind of handheld and vehicle mounted optics such as infrared cameras, night-visiongoggles, binoculars, etc. Infrared Cameras: Infrared cameras and sights detect the heat signature emanating from a human, vehicle, tent, etc. The IR-energy emerging from vegetation can also reveal a position - living vegetation differs in colours from dead in a IR-camera.

The Rhodesian war a military history

This book depicts the military history of Southern Rhodesia from the first resistance to colonial rule, through the period of UDI (unilateral declaration of independence) by the Smith government to the Lancaster House agreement that transferred power. There are vivid accounts of the operations against the guerillas by the security forces and the intensity of the fighting will surprise readers. Atrocities were undoubtedly committed by both sides but equally the protagonists were playing for very high stakes. But this is more than just a book on military operations. It provides expert analysis of the historical situation and examines events up to the present day, including Mugabes operations against rival tribes and white farmers. For a thorough work on its subject this book cannot be bettered. Essential reading for those wishing to learn more about a counter-insurgency campaign. The ingenuity of the Rhodesian military fighting against overwhelming odds and restricted by sanctions is impressive but the outcome culminating in the Lancaster House Agreement was inevitable.
