CLINICAL DENTISTRY

Duration Location Application 3 years full time School of Dentistry, Brisbane CBD, St Lucia, and Herston. Applications are to be submitted on the approved form with a curriculum vitae. Each applicant shall supply certified documentary evidence of academic records, English proficiency and two referees to support the application. The referees should be capable of making an evaluation of the ability of the candidate to pursue the proposed field of study and research. The closing date for applications is 30 April each year.

Domestic and international applicants can download forms from www.dentistry.uq.edu.au All overseas trained applicants are expected to have proficiency in the English language. The University cannot accept students who do not have the ability to converse, write and study in English. Applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit the IELTS test and meet a specified standard. Entry Requirements Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Dental Science with first or second-class honours, and have at least two years of graduate clinical experience. Applicants are encouraged to complete the primary examinations of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons prior to application. A minimum IELTS score of 7.0 in each component (speaking, listening reading and writing) is required. Please note, TOEFL test results are not acceptable.

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry is classified as a Level 9 Extended Masters Program under the current Australian Qualifications Framework. The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) degree trains dentists in a specialty, with the main objectives to develop: A deep understanding of the physiological, biochemical, structural and functional processes involved in general and oral health and homeostasis; Scholarship through advanced understanding and diagnostic and clinical competence in the discipline studied; Awareness of the responsibility of specialisation and embrace the multidisciplinary management required by many patients; and Understanding of scientific methodology and the role of research in the advancement of knowledge and clinical practice.

Please note that completion of the DClinDent program will not permit a graduate to register and practice in Australia unless he/she has completed a primary Bachelors degree in Dentistry at an Australian university or passed examinations held by the Australian Dental Council.

Study and Research Plan The DClinDent program involves 48 units taken over a period of three years (six semesters). Programs commence mid-January each year. The content of each program varies depending on the candidates chosen specialty. The DClinDent program under the guidance of a program coordinator which includes: Common core courses in basic science A nominated field of Dental Science A research project and report. Participants attend seminars, tutorials, practical classes, clinical work and other

relevant courses as required by the program coordinator. Participants also prepare a cumulative log summarising practical work performed in the principal program area for presentation to examiners if requested. DClinDent programs also commonly feature a research project occupying about 30% of total program time. This project may be a new and independent one or part of an existing research program.

Endodontics and Prosthodontics, cutting of cavities, use of dental materials, interpreting x-rays, and diagnosis of common oral conditions.

UQOHC

In 2013, the School will move to the new Oral Health Centre at the UQ Herston campus. The Centre will be Australias largest and most advanced tertiary oral health facility, combining research, education, training and specialist expertise in patient care. Cutting edge teaching facilities will include clinical simulation areas, pre-clinical and research laboratories, library and a Virtual Learning Centre. The UQOHC also offers state-of-theart patient clinics that will give our students essential experience. This includes 174 dental chairs, 13 beds, and two operating theatres.

Tuition Fees Tuition fees must be paid in full, one semester in advance. For the first semester of study the fee must be paid by the date specified in the letter of offer. The fees are calculated on a per unit basis and are payable at the time of enrolment each semester. These fees will be adjusted and cost indexed each year. Selection of Candidates The number of candidates accepted each year varies depending on staff. The selection of candidates takes place during May and June. Under normal circumstances, applicants are advised on the outcome of their application in July. Selection of candidates is competitive and is based on academic records, experience since graduation and referee reports. Applicants trained overseas who are shortlisted for selection may be requested to complete a one-week clinical assessment program to assess their clinical competency. This is conducted by the School of Dentistry at a fee of A$3,500 (subject to approval), which is refunded to successful applicants through reduced payment of tuition fees. The assessment program is coordinated by the potential academic coordinator and the structure of the assessment depends on the discipline or area(s) the applicant wishes to study. Assessment will depend upon the area(s) of interest and may include familiarity with clinical equipment, infection control procedures, laboratory exercises in

Financial Assistance The University does not provide financial assistance for international or domestic students undertaking the DClinDent program. The Australian Government offers Scholarships to international students from developing countries to enable them to study in Australia. Further details about available scholarships can be obtained from your local Australian Education Centre, AUSTRADE, International Development Program (IDP) office or Australian Diplomatic Mission. Domestic students (Australian citizens and holders of a permanent humanitarian visa) may be eligible for FEE-HELP, a Commonwealth Government funded loan scheme.
