Pre-Quali ficati ons
To show a horse in an NFQHA class, the horse must be certified by
NFQHA. Owners and exhibitors do not have to members of an
affiliate club, but they must be NFQHA members in good standing
to compete. For more information about horse certification or to
join NFQHA, please visit www.NFQHA.com or call 541.426.4403.
All breed classes are open to any horse.

Show Ru les
1. Entries can be added at the start of the preceding class,
not later.

2. No refunds on show fees unless the

show manager is notified before the
show starts and the horse’s / rider’s
inability to show is verified with a vet
or doctor’s certificate.

3. No refunds on cattle fees after

cattle are ordered.

4. When your number is called for class, you have 60

seconds to be at the gate. Class order will be posted
shortly after the start of the preceding class.

5. Dogs must be on a leash at all times.

6. No open fires or BBQ’s.

7. No alcohol, please.

How NFQHA Figure s t he Perce ntage
The following is a brief explanation of how NFQHA figures the
percentage of Quarter Horse blood. Our calculations are based on
the amount of Thoroughbred blood in a pedigree. The reasoning
behind this approach is that TB is the only outside blood that has
been allowed to be added to AQHA registered Quarter Horses. Of
course, when AQHA was originally founded by Robert Denhardt to
preserve the Bulldog Type Quarter Horse, the blood in the
founding stock was a mixture of Barb, Thoroughbred, Mustang,
Arab, draft horse, and a myriad of other blood. However, the
registry was closed to all of these breeds except the
Thoroughbred.

Our philosophy is that if the only added blood is taken out, what
remains is the original foundation stock. NFQHA also believes
that generally the more TB in a horse's pedigree, the more TB
attributes that horse will likely exhibit, and the more Quarter
Horse attributes will be lost.

A horse must possess 80%

Quarter Horse blood. It does
not matter what generation
the TB ancestors appear in as
long as the combined total of
TB blood does not exceed the
allowable amount. In order
to figure the TB percentage,
the amount contributed by
the first TB ancestor
encountered on each line is
added together to come up
with the total Thoroughbred
blood.

Each generation contributes

one half as much to the
pedigree as the prior one. A
parent contributes 50%, a
grandparent contributes
25%, a great grandparent
contributes 12.5%, etc.

A horse having one TB great grandparent (12.5%), one TB great

great great grandparent (3.125%), and one TB great great great
great grandparent (1.56%), carries 17.185% TB blood. (12.5% +
3.125% + 1.56% = 17.185% TB Blood) The horse in this
example carries 82.815% Quarter Horse blood (which is rounded
up to 83%) and is eligible for NFQHA registration.

To establish the TB in a pedigree, NFQHA researches the pedigree

back ten generations, or to the parents of the first registered horse,
whichever comes first on each line. Each time a TB is encountered,
it is added to the total. The only two exceptions to this rule are
Joe Reed #3, and Oklahoma Star #6. They were honored with
#3 and #6, by AQHA because of their important contribution to
the breed as Founding Sires. Because of this, NFQHA does not
look at the TB in their parents, and they are considered 100%
Quarter Horse blood.

This is a huge research project, possible only with sophisticated

computers and software, but it was the only fair, comprehensive,
black and white method that the NFQHA Board of Advisors could
arrive at. We did not want a horse that had Thoroughbreds close
up in its pedigree to be considered pure Foundation just because
the offspring of those Thoroughbreds might have low AQHA
numbers.

As many of you reading this are new to this unique show format,
we’d like to share the history behind this competition and the
National Foundation Quarter Horse Association (NFQHA).

From the 1960’s through the early 1990’s Foundation Quarter

Horse bloodlines had become increasingly unfashionable as
“specialty” horses became the rage. The bulldog Quarter Horse
was being lost as more Thoroughbred blood was being introduced.
That’s where Gail Zscheile and Brent Jensen stepped in. They had
fallen in love with the wonderful Foundation bloodlines, and while
trying to build a herd of their own discovered how difficult it was
to find Foundation Quarter Horses in the early 1990’s. They
decided something must be done, not only to preserve these great
horses, but also to help others find them. Along with Carol
Hassebroek, S.A. Walls, and Ron Yelick, they decided to start an
organization to preserve the “original” Quarter Horse bloodlines
and make it easier for Foundation Quarter Horse enthusiasts to
find them. No one imagined the overwhelming response from the
very first advertisement for NFQHA. In just our 14th year,
NFQHA has certified 32,000 horses and has over 13,000 family
memberships with an average of three members per household.
The word ‘Foundation’ has gone from being a little used and
derogatory term to a prestigious term used by horsemen and
horsewomen around the world.

Wanting to provide a venue that would best showcase these

amazing horses, the NFQHA Board of Advisors drafted show rules
that allowed the horse to be the star. The Foundation Quarter
Horse’s greatest attribute is his versatility, and to best show off the
great minds, athleticism, and natural cow sense, Ranch Horse
Versatility was born. It was decided that that all NFQHA rules
would have to promote Versatility in the Quarter Horse and
equality between exhibitors. Many other show organizations
including AQHA have borrowed from the successful format. The
NFQHA Advisors went on to draft many unique rules and
standards that not only were successful in NFQHA, but have
revolutionized the face of the Quarter Horse industry over the last
14 years.

NFQHA was the:

• 1st breed association to promote ‘No Glitz and No Glitter’

• 1st to introduce the incredibly popular In Hand Trail class
(since incorporated by many horse organizations)
• 1st to offer Versatility competition (since adopted by
AQHA)
• 1st to disallow excessive silver
• 1st to disallow excessive shaving of the protective ear,
nose, and eye hairs
• 1st to disallow the unhealthy practice of hoof black
• 1st to offer a true Non-Pro class where the competitor is
not required to compete against trainer’s families
• 1st to disqualify horses for unnatural gaits and ‘peanut
rolling’
• 1st to disallow the showing of babies (weanlings)

The NFQHA motto has always been that we’re different and we’re
proud of the changes we have helped bring about in the industry.

These new and innovative ideas received a warm welcome in 1997,

at the first NFQHA point earning show hosted by the newly
organized Oregon Foundation Quarter Horse Club (OFQHC),
founded by Carol Hassebroek. Today there have been over 300
shows in 12 states and Canada with almost 50,000 class entries.
All show records are kept and compiled at the home office in
Enterprise, Oregon and four horses have become NFQHA
Champions, with Oregon’s own Peppermint Brick achieving
NFQHA Superior Champion. Additionally, 144 plus Certificates of
Ability have been issued.
We are extremely proud of the work of the NFQHA members who
are organizing this great event and we applaud their efforts. It
takes thousands of man hours to put together and run an event
like this.

Descri ptions
• NFQHA has over 12,000 family memberships averaging
36,000 members in the United States, Canada, Europe,
Australia, and South America.

• NFQHA is the largest Foundation Quarter Horse

Association in the world and has the strictest research
standards.

• There must be 3 horses in a class for it to be point earning.

If a class is held without points, the horse’s lifetime show
record still shows the class, score, and placing.

• Ranch Riding is the working horse’s version of Western

Pleasure. The horse should respond easily to the rider’s
cues while exhibiting both free and balanced movement
and an alert expression. The ideal horse is the one that
you’d love to put in a full day’s work on. This class is
required for Versatility.

• Ranch Trail showcases the horse’s ability to handle

everyday chores. Horses must demonstrate their ability to
open and close a gate, stand quietly while the rider
dismounts, unbridles, re-bridles, picks up the off feet and
remounts from the off side, calmly and willingly drag a log
for a short distance either forward or backward (course
designer’s choice), and stand patiently while the rider
swings and throws a rope at a stationary steer. This class
is required for Versatility.

• Trail is not required for Versatility so the course is only
limited to the designer’s imagination. Horses should be
alert, yet willing to tackle any obstacle.

• In Hand Trail was designed for yearlings and two year

olds to learn useful tasks from the ground prior to their
life as a saddle horse. Colts and fillies are lead through a
course designed to both challenge and expose them to new
things. This class became so popular that NFQHA added
it for horses aged 3 and over !

• Reining NFQHA style has an interesting twist. Actually

less twists, as multiple spins are not practical out in the
working environment. NFQHA only allows up to one-
and-a-half spins at a time. Excessive slides are not
allowed either. After all, if you slide forty feet out on the
range you might be hurting. This class is required for
Versatility.

• Western Riding is designed to showcase the well-trained

horse that can, on cue, make correct lead changes and
adjustments with speed while remaining quiet and
maneuverable.

• Barrels, Poles, Key Hole, and Agility are offered to

highlight the speed and athleticism of the Foundation
Quarter Horse.

• Cow Work is designed to show off the finished cow horse.

A cow is boxed on one end of the arena, taken down the
fence and turned at least once each direction, then circled
both directions out in the arena. Speed, athletic ability
and a good dose of cow sense are definite musts in this
class.

• Ranch Cutting imitates a real life situation. A horse and

rider must cut a specific cow out of the herd, take it down
the fence and through a mock gate, and then pen it. The
horse should be in control of the cow at all times and stay
quiet and responsive. This class is required for Versatility.

• Reined Cutting allows horses to cut cattle ranch horse

style, with occasional help from the rider, while Specialty
Cutting allows the finished cutter to show off in style.

• Roping and Daubing classes highlight the Foundation

Quarter Horse’s ability to get to a cow quickly and quietly
catch a cow, a skill that’s useful for doctoring or branding.

• Color classes -- held for Palominos, Buckskins, Duns and

Grullos, and Roans – help celebrate the exquisite hues
found among Foundation Quarter Horses. Judges look for
conformation relative to breed characteristics.

• The Rawhide division encourages youth age 7 and under

to compete in Walk/Trot and Lead Line classes for
NFQHA points! Ranch Riding, Trail, and the Timed
Events are offered for the Rawhide buckaroos as well.
