B.Tech III Year I Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations December/January 2013/14 DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80

Use of IS 456:2000, SP16 Design aided charts only and IS:875 (Part 1 & Part 2) books is permitted in the examination hall.

PART - A (Answer any one question, 1 32 marks)

***** 1 Design a short column, with effect length 3.6 m, capable of safety resisting the following factored loads effects (under uniaxial eccentricity): (i) Pu =1665 kN, Mu = 85 kNm. (ii) Pu = 385 kN, Mu = 206 kNm. Assume M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Draw the cross section and elevation details. A simply supported beam of an effective span of 10 m is subjected to a uniformly distributed live load of 35 kN/m. The thickness and width of the flange are restricted to 120 and 1200 mm respectively. Design a T-beam section with M20 concrete and HYSD-Fe 415 bars by limit state design. Draw the cross section and elevation details. PART - B (Answer any three questions, 3 16 marks) 3 (a) (b) What is meant by characteristic strength of a material as used in IS 456 2000? What is meant by normal distribution in statistics and what is the relationship between mean value and characteristics value in such a distribution assuming 5% confidence limit? What is meant by inverted T-beam? Where and when inverted T-beams are provided? A R.C T-beam has a flange of 2000 mm x 100 mm and web of 300 mm x 420 mm. It is reinforced with 4 numbers of 25 mm dia. steel bars in the tension zone with a clear cover of 27.5 mm. Determine moment of resistance of T-beam. A simply supported beam of effective span 6 m and M20 grade concrete carries an udl of 25 kN/m. The overall size of the beam is 230 mm x 500 mm. It has 4 bars in the tension zone and 4 bars in the compression zone all of 18 mm dia. Fe415 grade steel without any curtailment or crank. Design the shear reinforcement for full length of the beam using mild steel. An RC column of 300 mm x 200 mm size carries an axial load of 450 kN. Design a rectangular footing of uniform thickness using M20 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel if the safe bearing capacity of soil is 125 kN/m2. Keep the projections of footing beyond the faces of the column equal in both directions. Design a two way slab for the floor of a room of clear dimensions 4 m x 5 m to carry an imposed load of 3.5 kN/m2. The edges of the slab are discontinuous and the corners are prevented from lifting. Width of supports alround is 200 mm.
