Alexander the Greats Obituary By Brendan Verbrugge

Hail, people of Greece. I, Antigonus, the most powerful and trusted of Alexanders generals, come bearing news of utmost evil and sadness. Our beloved leader, Alexander the Great, has perished. This news is both sad and terrible, as Alexanders men, indeed all of us, looked to him for guidance. I will now begin a speech that I prepared in his honor, to remind ourselves of the great things he accomplished. Alexanders accomplishments are many. As soon as he succeeded the throne form his poor, brutally murdered father, it was clear that he would make a good ruler. He was handsome, strong, and intelligent, the perfect fit for a king. The first thing he did as ruler was to civilize Greece after Philips death. As some of you may remember, things got out of hand after his assassination, and it clouded some peoples judgment to the point where they actually tried to rise up and rebel against their own beloved country. Alexander dealt with these people quickly and efficiently, and so brought Greece back together. He then set about a massive campaign whose goal was to civilize and bring together all peoples under his guidance. It was not an easy task though. Some people did not understand the importance of what Alexander was trying to do, and many battles were fought. Although his troops were relatively small in number, Alexanders forces won battle after battle after battle, adding more and more people and land to our wonderful empire. Eventually he had conquered almost the entire world, and he wanted more, but his men were tired and refused to go any further. So Alexander and his troops headed back to Babylon, where Alexander fell ill. A few days later he died. Alexanders death was very cloudy at best. All we know was that on a victorious return to Babylon, Alexander fell ill. The best doctors that could be had on short notice tried to help, but apparently, Alexander was very sick. After a few

days, the sickness proved too much for the doctors, and too much for Alexander. He died in a delirious, subconscious state. Nothing else is known for sure. Among all of Alexanders many accomplishments, one of the most prominent is the creation of Hellenistic culture. Hellenistic culture is the result of all the mixing cultures of the people that now live in our empire. Hellenistic culture has caused us all to think in new ways, and consequently, many amazing advances have been made. We have mathematicians and inventors which have created amazing things. Archimedes, an inventor I know, was once able to lift a fully loaded ship out of the water using ropes and pulleys! Finally, I come to a question many of you have probably had when I first started the speech: what now? Well, at first, we were asking that question too. Ill admit, there was some disagreement over what should happen. Alexander never had any known children, and he died without naming an heir, so we were uncertain as to the fate of the empire. Eventually we decided that the kingdom would be divided amongst Alexanders three most powerful generals. I, Antigonus, shall rule over Greece and Macedonia. Seleucus shall rule over Persia, and Ptolemy shall rule over Egypt. The death of Alexander was an unexpected and tragic blow to our empire. It is a sad thing that Alexander will never get to see the grand results of his hard work. Be that as it may, we must move on. Greater and bigger discoveries still lie ahead of us, and this is in the direction we must look. This is not to say that we should never look back though. Indeed, we will remember him for as long as we exist, for he is the reason all these great things have happened. We shall remember you, legendary son of Zeus, as long as we may. May the path that you now walk be safer and more peaceful than anything you ever had in life, Alexander the Great.
