RMI Drives Increased Performance Across XLR and XLS

Processor Families to Achieve up to 1.5 GHz for Enterprise

and Infrastructure Applications
Multi-threaded XLR732 Processor and Quad-Core Processor Families
Enhance
Baseband and Networking Capabilities with Added Processing Performance
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(Business Wire)--
At the RMI "Performance 2009" Conference,RMI Corporation, a leading
provider of
high-performance processors for communication and media rich
applications,
announced today a design and performance breakthrough across its
volume
production multi-core multi-threaded XLR and XLS Processor families.
This
breakthrough allows the processor families to achieve processing
speeds up to
1.5 GHz for enterprise and infrastructure applications. The multi-
threaded
octal-core XLR732 and quad-core XLS Processor families have added an
additional
25 percent of performance capability enabling customers in the
baseband,
security and L4-L7 networking sectors additional value and
capabilities
previously unavailable - a 50% increase over its closest multi-core
competitors.

"I am very proud to announce this enhancement and performance increase

across
the XLR and XLS Processor families and look forward to bringing it to
our
extensive customer base," said Behrooz Abdi, president and chief
executive
officer, RMI. "Our engineering team at RMI is unmatched and the
ability to
design, execute and deliver gives us a distinct advantage in the
market that
will allow us to continue growing our market share across our targeted
markets."

The XLR732 is an 8-core, high-performance, highly integrated

processor. The
XLR732 processor consists of an innovative set of XLR Processor cores
enabling
up to 32 threads, or virtual CPUs (vCPUs), in a single chip. The XLR`s
enhanced
MIPS64 compatible cores implement fine-grained, 4-way multithreading
combined
with a multi-level hierarchy of caches, autonomous accelerators, and
point-to-point interconnects for data and message transfers. The
interconnects`
full-speed operation augment application scalability and closely
integrate the
high performance main memory controllers, level-2 caches, 12.5Gbps
accelerated
security operations, and accelerated networking interfaces to deliver
a
processing solution running at frequencies of 800MHz - 1.5 GHz
optimized for
maximum throughput and workload efficiency.

"We continue to drive the capabilities that the market demands for
multi-core
processors and this performance increase is indicative of our
success," said
Nazar Zaidi, senior vice president of engineering, RMI. "By increasing
the
performance levels across the XLR and the XLS Processor families, we
continue to
open markets and drive capabilities that haven`t been available from
our
competitors."

The XLS Processor is a feature-rich general purpose processor with application

specific autonomous hardware accelerators and multiple on-chip interconnect
options providing an ideal combination of high level programmability,
performance scalability, and intelligent packet management. RMI`s XLS
Processor
enables integrated control plane, data plane, and security processing in a
single System-on-a-Chip (SuperSoC) solution. The XLS Processor Family is
optimized for applications such as Wireless Base Stations, where PCB real
estate
and power are a premium, while requiring integrated network connectivity,
security, and compression acceleration options. Such features will benefit
emerging wireless standards that emphasize high data rate and low latency
applications such as Mobile VoIP and Video conferencing.

Pricing and Availability

The XLR732 and the XLS416/616 Processors will sample in Q3 2009 with
full-production expected in Q4 2009. Pricing is available upon request.

High Performance Packet Processing
The Bivio 6500 Custom Programmable Network Appliance Platform delivers an
advanced packet processing architecture in a costeffective, modular chassis
suitable for a wide range of highperformance contentaware networking solutions.
Central to the Bivio 6500 design is the RMI XLR

Processor that implements 4way
multithreading on up to eight MIPS64
®
compatible cores for a total of 32 threads or
virtual CPUs in a single platform. With multiple threads, the XLR processor can
efficiently manage tasks by processing additional data on available threads when
a thread is occupied. This technology significantly reduces internal cache and
memory latencies to dramatically improve overall system throughput. In addition,
for more computeintensive applications, a single core can be programmed to
dedicate all processing resources to a single, focused task.
A true programmable solution, the Bivio 6500 and XLR processor do not require microcoding
or proprietary programming models. The XLR Linux Software Developer Kit (SDK) supports
standard C/C++ code development using Linux 2.6 with standard tool chains and debugger
enhancements. The SDK provides documentation, source code and application examples
for chip diagnostics, performance monitoring tools, and device drivers for advanced XLR
features including the XLR Fast Messaging Network and Security Acceleration Engine. The
SDK allows system programmers to quickly take advantage of the XLR architecture’s auto
nomous acceleration engines to relieve the processing cores from packet data transfers,
cryptography functions, authentication operations, TCP/IP CRC calculations and network
interface data management.
The Bivio 6500 Network Appliance Platforms can support a wide range of contentaware
deep packet inspection (DPI) applications for security, mobility, multimedia and storage
management markets.
Features and Benefits

Specifications
The Bivio 6500 supports dual redundant hotswap power supplies
and dual hotswap hard drives (SATA or SAS technology) that can be
configured in RAID1 redundancy for application storage, network sta
tistics and system logging. The system chassis is a carriergrade 2U rack
mount appliance with optimized airflow and thermal management.
Network Interface Modules (NIMs) simplify the connection of the Bivio
6500 Network Appliance Platform to a variety of industry standard
network interfaces. The platform includes two NIM slots that may be
populated with any combination of the available NIM boards. This allows
equipment integrators to select the appropriate type and number of
interfaces required for each installation without impacting the appliance
system architecture. Specific Bivio 6500 NIMs are designed with configu
rable bypass circuits so that in the event of a power failure or other system
fault, the bypass ports will fail “open”, allowing network traffic to pass
uninterrupted through the NIM. The failopen occurs between paired ports
on the same NIM. This feature allows the network appliance to be placed
directly inline in the network topology without adding additional switches
or routers and is especially useful in a transparent mode deployment.
