Question No. 1 15 Marks

Design and make a neat

dimensioned sketch of a muff
coupling which is used to connect
two steel shafts transmitting 40
kW at 350 r.p.m. The material for
the shafts and key is plain carbon
steel for which allowable shear
and crushing stresses may be
taken as 40 MPa and 80 MPa
respectively . The material for the
muff is cast iron for which the
allowable shear stress may be
assumed as 15 MPa .

2– Design a flexible coupling for connecting a motor shaft has a diameter of 75 mm and runs at 3000
r.p.m to a pump shaft of 60 mm .The power to be transmitted = 60 H.P. The bearing pressure in the
rubber bush and allowable stress in the pins are to be limited to 5.5 and 350 kg/cm2.

Present a full design and drawing for the coupling and assume any missing data you find it necessary
to complete your design .

Question No. 3 30 Marks

3 –An Uni-directional 8 pads thrust bearing is required to support a load of 50 Kn. The Start up load
is expected to be about 20 % of the total bearing load. The shaft diameter is to be 0.130 m and the
bearing has to operate at max. Speed of 8500 r.p.m. The lubricant available to the bearing is a
mineral oil grade 46 ( ISO VG 46) with viscosity index of 95 . The lubricant is supplied in the form of
flooded feed with inlet temperature of 50 C o . Bearing misalignment is expected to be exist.

It is required to present a full design of that bearing. Draw a sketch to show the general layout and
the configuration of the final design of the off –set pad thrust bearing .

Question No. 4 15 Marks

An open belt drive connects two flat pulleys. The Pulleys diameters are 300mm and 450 mm and the
corresponding angels of lap are 160° and 210° . The smaller pulley runs at 200 r.p.m. the coefficient of
friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25 . It is found that the belt is on the point of slipping when 3
kw is transmitted.

Calculate which of the following two alternatives would be the more effective in increasing the power
which can be transmitted :
(a) increasing the coefficient of friction by 10% , or (b) increasing the initial static tension in the
belt by 10%

which of these two methods would be more effective ? Find the percentage increase in power possible
in each case .

Question No 5 15 Marks

In a horizontal belt drive for a centrifugal blower, the blower is belt driven at 600 r.p.m. by a 15 kW,
1750 r.p.m. electric motor The centre distance is twice the diameter of the larger pulley. The density
of the belt material = 1500 kg/rn3 maximum allowable stress = 4 MPa; μ = 0.5 (motor pulley) ; μ = 0.4
(blower pulley); peripheral velocity of the belt = 20 m/s.

Determine following:

1. Pulley diameters 2. belt length 3. cross-sectional area of the belt 4. minimum initial :tension for
operation without slip; 5. resultant force in the plane of the blower when operating With an initial
tension 50 per cent greater than the minimum value.
