On Display: The Lack of Responsibility by Zoos and Circuses, the Lack of rights for Mistreated Elephants

You are locked up in chains that are so tight that they are blocking your blood circulation. Its pitch black and you cannot see anything. You have not had anything to eat for so many days you cant keep count. Your focus is to stay standing up because you cant see anything on the ground and you dont want to fall to sleep on that, but its so hard because youve been up for countless days. So many other people are bundled up in this tight little cage and feeling how you are. You start to cry because you remember that your little sister had just died from being beat to death. You remember that terrible, terrible scream. You wanted to help her, but you were locked up. You try to get your mind off it, but you cant. When you finally do the cage door opens up and a brilliant light is shining right in your eyes so you have to adjust your eyes to it. A demanding voice is yelling at you and telling you to get out of the cage. This is how hundreds of elephants feel in zoos or circuses. Locked up in chains and dont know if theyll make it another day. Elephants are loving and caring creatures that live in the wild and want to be left alone, but we are taking that away from them and denying them what they need to survive. Then we are laughing at them in circuses and in zoos when they are doing tricks that we think are natural to them. Well they are not natural because the people training the elephants are beating them, against the elephants will, but they hide it from us so we don t

know anything about it. They are tricking us mentally so we laugh at it and pay them more money so we can enjoy it some more. We must think about these things and how they are hurting the animals. Elephants are animals that have rights and feelings just like us and deserve better from humans. When most people think of zoos they think of you going to see animals living in their natural habitats. The animals might seem like they are living like they should, but they are not. It doesnt matter how real the fancy cage looks, it is still a cage and not the animals natural environment. Zoos take away a lot of the animals natural needs and the things they like. One of the many animals that suffer from this is the elephant. Zoos take away many needs and wants that the elephants need. For Starters, they take away the space they need to move in and exercise. They are kept in chains and cages for countless hours with many other elephants or sometimes alone. In the wild they travel in herds. Since they eat so much they travel from place to place in herds where there is more food and water. These animals also need exercise so they can stay healthy. In addition, zoos take away the elephants social needs. Elephants are very social and friendly. They need other elephants in their life so they can know that they are not alone. They also need fresh water to drink from and to bathe in. Because theyre herbivores they will need a lot of plants to eat, which is between 300-400 pounds. Also, a number of elephants catch illnesses and die from being so sick. Zoos dont give the elephants the proper care and medicine they need. Its not just elephants either. Any animal you can think of is probably in a zoo or aquarium (An aquarium is like a zoo, but only has animals that live in the water). When these wild animals are in zoos and aquariums they cannot do the natural things they do in the wild. They should not belong in zoos or aquariums for our entertainment. They

belong in the wild because they are wild animals. Elephants are animals that have rights and feelings just like us and deserve better from humans. It is our responsibility to stop this so elephants can be free in the future, before it is too late for them. This information is from http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-in-entertainment/zoos/get-elephants-zoos/ and http://www.defenders.org/elephant/basic-facts.

Many elephants are abused in zoos and circuses and they dont deserve this. People have taken advantage of humans being smarter than most animals and have used those animals for human entertainment. Just because you are smarter than something doesnt mean you have authority over it. Zoos have taken away the animals natural habitat. Now circuses have also taken most of their natural needs by locking them up in chains and cages just like the zoos. When you go to a circus and see the wild animals doing all those fancy tricks the people in the circus try to tell you that those tricks are natural to the animal. Without thinking you just agree. If you think about it, it doesnt make any sense. If you go in the wild with animals you will not see any kind of animal standing on its head or any other tricks they do in the circus. But they tell you this anyway so that you can go and pay them for seeing the animals do these tricks. All they care about is the money and not the elephants health and needs. O ne of the big circuses that do this is Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey. One of the many animals that are abused is an elephant. For starters, they are locked up in chains for countless days without food, water, nor room to move around in. Elephants travel 30 miles per day and are active 18

hours per day in the wild, but since they are in captivity for human entertainment, those basic needs are taken away from them. When an elephant travels to go to other places around the world they are locked up in chains with many other elephants squished all together in a tight little box-shaped car that is carried by a train. This is unnatural for the elephant, which causes the elephant to sway its head, bob his head, and pace. This is bad because this is unnatural for the elephants to be doing this and it shows that they are sick. In addition, the elephants are hit with very sharp hooks called bull hooks. The bull hooks are used to hit the elephants, which make them bleed. After a couple of days when an elephant is born (which weighs about 200250 pounds) it is usually hit with a bull hook. The elephant trainers do this so that they can get the elephant to get used to the routine at a young age. They also do it so they dont have to do it when the elephant is older and bigger and is more likely to fight back. Furthermore, many elephants die from illnesses, but the trainers dont care and go back to what theyre doing like nothing ever happened. The elephants get sick from lack of exercise and not being in their natural habitats. It would be like you in a desert with no water, food, nor exercise. You would also have no one to talk to because everyone died. You would be being beat almost every 5 seconds for doing nothing. This is how many elephants feel in circuses. If you read all this you understand that it is obvious that elephants are abused in circuses. Elephants are animals that have rights and feelings just like us and deserve better from humans. It is our responsibility to stop this so elephants can be free in the future, before its too late for them. This information is

The paragraphs above explained to you that humans have taken advantage of elephants because theyre not as intelligent as humans. We humans have done this to elephants and many more wonderful creatures. We have taken advantage of them by forcing them into zoos and circuses. In those zoos and circuses very cruel people have been beating the animals for their entertainment. Also, animals have been killed for something thats a part of them, but yet humans wear it. Elephants are one of the many animals that have been killed for something that is a part of them. Elephants have been killed for their ivory, which is a part of them. The ivory is not for us to wear, its part of the elephant and for their protection.

When you go to the store and get the very pricey and expensive jewelry you dont think about where it came from. Some are just rocks and special kinds of elements like silver, bronze, gold, copper, and many more that are made into fancy stuff. Unfortunately, ivory can be made into a jewel, which has a bloody process. Many people value ivory so they pay poachers to go to Africa or Asia where elephants are and the poachers kill the elephants for their ivory. Then it is sold to Japan where Japanese jewelry-makers carve the ivory into wonderful and magnificent things. What interests me is that the some Japanese jewelry-makers dont know that ivory comes from elephants. Ivory doesnt just come from elephants though. Walruses, some whales, and hippos all have ivory as a part of them too. So poachers kill them and sell it to buyers for in return they get money. The poachers are in it for the money and the buyers are in it for the ivory. This is not fair to the elephants though, because the elephants are killed for something that is part of them. It doesnt matter what the ivory is made into because it is a part of the

elephants. It would be like someone or something killing you and then pulling out all of your teeth. Then they would sell it and make fancy things out of it, but you would be dead. Even though it is illegal to kill an elephant in Africa people still do it in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia and some do it just for the fun of it. Also, in 1977 about 1.3 million elephants lived in Africa. By 1997, only 600,000 remained. Also, elephants are losing their habitat, which means that their food, water, and shelter supply is low. So that causes them to go to farms and eat their crops. The Farmers dont like that so they usually kill the elephants when they could at least try to tell the elephant in some kind of way to back away. Maybe they could put up a fence so it doesnt come back, but killing it is careless and being lazy. No matter how many elephants die, the ivory trade still continues because people love ivory so much. It can be made into beautiful sculptures, piano keys, and many more, but that doesnt matter because elephants are dying from it. The ivory is a part of the elephant and the elephant uses it for protection. It is not right to kill someone for something that is a part of them and then you wear it. Elephants have rights and feelings just like us and deserve better from humans. It is our responsibility to stop this so elephants can be free in the future, before it is too late for them. Elephants have been used for humans entertainment in zoos and circuses. In those zoos and circuses they have been abused and beaten to do tricks. The zoos and circuses have also taken away their natural and basic needs to survive. An example is they have been kept in very tight chains for countless hours. Humans also value the elephants ivory, so hundreds of

elephants have lost their lives. The elephants wear it for protection while we wear it for style. This is not fair to the elephants and they deserve better. They do have rights just like us.

Humans have not been fair to animals and have abused them in many ways. For starters, laboratory animals are abused by hurtful and unnecessary experiments that are harmful to the body. They stick poisonous needles in them and then put them in cages so they can observe the animal while the animal is suffering in pain. Farm animals are used for meat products all around the world. The animals are slaughtered for their meat that we humans eat. Beef, pork, goat, chicken, fish, and many more are used for meat. Companion animals, like cats and dogs, are abused by cruel people who dont care about the animals. Some live on the streets, struggling to survive off the little bit they have, not knowing if theyll make it another day. They are on the streets because someone didnt care enough for the pet and kicked it out of the house. Also, many are locked up in cages at a animal shelter. Wildlife are shot and killed by hunters and people just for the fun of it. Wildlife are also taken away from their families into circuses and zoos where they are denied their natural and basic needs. As you can see, it would be very helpful if you could help these poor animals because the animals need to know that they are not alone and have somebody to count on. If you sign the animal bill of rights that would help these animals a lot. Over a quarter of a million people have already signed this and you can do it today too. It includes that Animals have the right to be free from exploitation, abuse, neglect, and cruelty. Laboratory animals have the right not to be used in cruelty or unnecessary experiments. Farm animals have the right to an environment that satisfies their

basic psychological and physical needs. Companion animals have a right to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care. Wildlife have a right to a natural habitat, ecological sufficient to a normal existence, and self-sustaining species population. Animals have a right to their interests represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the land. This is from http://aldf.org/blog/sign-the-animal-bill-of-rights/. Animals have rights and feelings just like us and deserve better from humans. It is our responsibility to stop this so animals can be free in the future, before its too late for them. Unfortunately, elephants are just one of the animals that are abused by cruel humans. This is not fair and not right because if you dont want it to happen to you then you shouldnt do it to someone/something else. Elephants are very intelligent animals. They can remember their fathers face if he/she hasnt seen him in years. Elephants are also known or painting with their trunks. Elephant are also very caring. In a book I read about elephants and it said that an elephant usually doesnt help elephants out of its herd, but this elephant didnt care. The elephant was finding something to eat when he saw another elephant who got its trunk stuck. The elephant helped the other elephant even though he was not part of his herd. Elephants have a special way of talking to one another too. They can communicate over long distances by making low rumble that only they can hear. As you can see elephants have some things in common with humans. Elephants are very special, but are on the verge of extinction. You might have not known before, but now you do. So help elephants so they can be free in the future

Elephants have rights and feelings just like us and deserve better from humans. It is our responsibility to stop this so elephants can be free in the future. So get up and do something useful in your life and stop elephant abuse, before its too late and there are no more elephants.
