Sleep Apnea Ask: 1. Do you snore? 2. Anyone ever said you look like you cant breathe while sleeping or gasp? 3. Are you tired all day or feel like you could call asleep within minutes in a chair? 4. Neck Size - larger than 15-16 in (38 cm) for females; 17 in (43 cm) for males If yes to any of these, have client ask doctor about sleep apnea possibility Meds Get list of medicines clients are taking Cross reference with attached list of medicines Refer to physician if any medicines match and ask if could be switched if possible DO NOT CHANGE ANY MEDICINES Low Testosterone (Males only) - Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males (ADAM) Questionnaire Ask: 1. Do you have a decrease in libido (sex drive)? 2. Do you have a lack of energy? 3. Do you have a decrease in strength and/or endurance? 4. Have you lost height? 5. Have you noticed a decreased enjoyment of life? 6. Are you sad and/or grumpy? 7. Are your erections less strong? 8. Have you noted a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports? 9. Are you falling asleep after dinner? 10. Has there been a recent deterioration in your work performance? If Yes to questions 1 or 7 or any 3 other questions: Send to physician for low testosterone evaluation. Thyroid - Generally not the cause of weight gain but if client DOES have thyroid disease, medicine MUST be optimized. If patient is on thyroid med and wants to lose weight, refer to doctor to ensure optimization. Insulin Resistance (Metabolic Syndrome / PCOS) Waist greater than 35 in (88 cm) in women. 40 in (102 cm) in men. Stick to lower carb for these folks. Refer to docs for possible testing. Hemoglobin A1c, fasting blood glucose, Oral glucose tolerance. Docs might prescribe medicine (metformin). For PCOS they may add antiandrogen (spironolactone) Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (no periods for 3 months) - Seek doctor, but this is likely due to excess exercise, chronic dieting, and too much stress! Adrenal Fatigue Should be named HPA (hypothalamus pituitary adrenal) Axis Dysfunction. Likely due to sleep disruption or excess stress.
